If something is top rated, it's generally earned its place. However, Past Sins earns a lot of ridiculous flak for bearing story elements a lot of people feel weaken it as a whole. I disagree with pretty much all of it and it's a great non-shipping story with a well thought out storyline, characters, and approach.
If you're more interested in authors: Pen Stroke, AVeryStrange, SyrinKitty, and Gravekeeper would be good to look at.
