Anonymous targets Japan Government for Slaughtering Dolphins Acorriding to the article, Anonymous has taken action in hacking the systems at Narita International Airport of Japan with a Direct Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. This action has shut down servers as of Friday evening to Saturday. This attack was due to the Dolphin Project lead and activist named Ric O'Barry, creator of the well known documentary 'The Cove', has been captured and detained by Japan Athorities for being against their 'War on Dolphins'. Activists say that O'Barry has been merceliously interrogated and poorly fed.
I generally consider it singular because Anonymous is only a group insofar as you've got a bunch of vaguely associated people who occasionally get together to mess with other people. It's a bunch of loosely connected guys who often -- although you're right, it can be plural -- end up getting credit for something Some Guy On The Internet did. I mean, being barely connected really is what makes Anonymous what they are. It's their selling point; they're an idea, not a literal room full of people. It's why they wear the Guy Fawkes masks in reference to "V for Vendetta." You could actually execute every "member" of Anonymous and the group would probably just pick up again.
I actually quite like the members of Anonymous who actually do things and aren't 16-year-olds posting pictures of themselves wearing Guy Fawkes masks to their Twitter.
And even if these people on the internet happen to attack someone nasty, the truth of the matter is that they end up proving to be a temporary nuisance at the very worst. The Japanese government will still be standing long after these online DDoS attacks peter out, just as with previous institutions targeted by Anonymous (Scientology, ISIS, etc.).
