So, today, my friend and I had a debate on Rainbow Dash's personality, and we'd like some opinions on this. I'll give you both of our sides of the issue, and we'd like to hear your thoughts on it, whether you agree with one of us or have your own opinion about it.

Beginning with my point of view, I think that Rainbow Dash's character has been going downhill recently. She's becoming far too cocky and arrogant, and while I know she has displayed traces of this attitude before, I think that starting around the beginning of season two it's begun to consume her character. I thought her previous personality was good, giving her a bit of arrogance, but she was quick to show that she was a kind person overall, but now it feels quite the opposite. She's learned lesson after lesson about not being arrogant and big-headed, only to come back in the next episode with that trait seemingly multiplied ten fold. To me it feels like she can't go five minutes without acting like a jerk or saying something hurtful, a trait that wasn't present in season one. It's beginning to get on my nerves, honestly, as Rainbow Dash is one of my favorite ponies. I find that one of the worst offenders of this among the writing staff is Merriwether Williams.

On to my friends side of the argument, he states that this change in RD's attitude is the writer's way of giving her complexity and developing her character. He feels that Rainbow Dash's new, cockier demeanor is meant to balance out her loyal side and give her internal conflict to build on in future episodes. He also believes that the reason this wasn't as evident in the first season is that Rainbow Dash didn't have as much screen time, therefor the conflict didn't have enough time to be established. He speculates that Rainbow Dash may be this way due to taunting during her childhood, giving her over-competitive tendencies and a desire to try to live up to the standards others have set for her based on her status as the "best flyer in Ponyville". He backs this up with segments of "Sonic Rainboom".

I have tried to be as unbiased as possible in presenting each side, and I apologize if it seems otherwise. Again, we would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this development, if you have any at all.

    Thanks for reading,

Well I think you are right. Her arrogance has sorta taken over her character. But she is still showing signs of loyalty. I wouldn't say arrogance has taken over completely I would also say her mischievous tendency's are also showing too. She has quite a mixed personality if you ask me. I still like her she is an awesome character because I think it is because of these arrogant, mischievous tendency's that make her fun to watch.

Funny, I was just thinking about starting a topic about this.

To be honest, Rainbow Dash seems about the same to me. It's not like she didn't have her "brutal honesty" moments back in Season 1.

Rainbow Dash: She kind of is!"

This could be seen as her being hurtful, but, to be fair, she has experience with having a bad first impression of Pinkie Pie all the way back in "Griffon the Brush-Off". She knows exactly why Cranky wouldn't get along with Pinkie, even if Rainbow Dash has warmed up to her. Heck, Pinkie's my favourite of the mane six and I can see that.

Rainbow Dash isn't always nice, but unless she reaches Gilda-ish levels, I don't see her as a bad person, err, pony. It's not like she's the only character who's ultimately good but has some (major/minor) flaws. The reason I like the main characters in this show so much is because they aren't perfect.

Eh, I guess it's all subjective. It's fine to dislike Rainbow Dash, I can see why you would, but I love her just as much as the others.
