Every year, I always like to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with all the wonderful character balloons. Now that it's concluded, I was wondering why after all these years, there's still no MLP float or balloon featured. Does anypony know why this hasn't happened yet?
I was just wondering the same thing... I mean, there's a Sonic balloon and a Hello Kitty balloon, so why no Pinkie Pie?
My Little Pony has been around since 1983, eight years before the first Sonic game, and has a massive global fanbase.
Seriously? With all the fame it has garnered in the last few years, more fans than Pokémon, and even some news reporting of its ever-growing fanbase, I don't see why MLP doesn't have at least some part in the parade. It would be a great opportunity to market it to more people than they already have. They even made a Finn and Jake balloon this year. And their show has been on air about the same time as MLP. You're saying Adventure Time is more popular and more recognizable than Friendship is Magic? Well, I guess that explains why there's also no Doctor Who or Star Trek floats. Whether a character makes it in the parade probably depends on universal popularity, not fandoms.
EDIT secretly fandoms are a tiny perchentage of the people the parade caters to. more people have watched adventure time than have watched mlpfim if only because of preconceptions about the shows. start trek is dead, dr who is barely known of your side of the pond.
Well, I don't know if most people would be into the MLP float idea, but then again, the Soni9c float caught me off guard. The sort of floats I expect to see are those from new movies, popular animated cartoons that air on major networks (ex: the Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad) or from very iconic series/brands like Star Wars or Hello Kitty. It's also pretty normal to have superhero balloons. Those are always nice because pretty much everybody understands what they are. Neither of those statements are true. There are still new and very popular Star Trek movies coming out over here, and most people I know outside the realm of the internet know what Doctor Who is; it's rather popular among my peer group and most of the older gentlemen and ladies I know are at least aware of its existence. The real reason why those floats probably didn't show is because they aren't cultural icons, not through lack of popularity but through lack of mainstream circulation (which even Star Trek gets sometimes, so that might have just been bad luck). Popularity and mainstream recognition are two different things.
But there's just as much MLP stuff out there as there is Adventure Time. And Finn and Jake got a totally algebraic balloon! But alas, no ponies.
MLP, not iconic or popular enough? I beg to differ - if a handful of mainstream, prime time news sources bothered to do sections on bronies (albeit mockingly most of time), I'd think MLP at least big enough to merit a gigantic Pinkie balloon in someone's Thanksgiving Day parade. And Hello Kitty? Really? I don't recall that cartoon ever being the least bit interesting. The only reason that gets 'cultural icon' status is because the design is so appealing to little girls and even adult women that the merch sells like hotcakes. Content-wise, FiM far, far trumps the braindead nature of Hello Kitty as far as I'm concerned. Why is there no justice in the world? WHY?! It's okay, Pinkie. You'll be immortalized as a float some day.
I have yet to find any pictures, but I've read a dozen different stories saying that there was a My Little Pony balloon in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade.
While it may be true that the MLP franchise is fairly old, the fandom is relatively new. The big brony boom really started with Friendship is Magic and a lot don't really like the older series, myself included. Therefore inclusion of age while talking about the franchise as a whole is not relative as opposed to G4 alone and its time frame. That is to say I still see no reason why there couldn't be an mlp float in the parade. My Little Pony itself is iconic in a way, once you look past all the horrible mistakes of generations 1-3. At the very least I wouldn't mind seeing a Pinkie Pie float/balloon. I think bronies should get their own parade ... and holiday ... and appreciation month.
Hasbro won't pay for a balloon. That's it. Nintendo paid for Pikachu. Sega paid for Sonic. CartoonNetwork paid for Finn and Jake. Hasbro... they don't feel like paying to help sell a line of toys once a year.
Day of the Doctor sold out in Bellingham, WA so Doctor Who's big enough here. I want to see Star Trek, Doctor Who and MLP in the parade next year damn it! they're all good!
Y'know something? If I wanted a Spongebob Boxset, or an Adventure time Boxset, y'know what I could do? I could buy it from a store. But if I wanted a My Little Pony Boxset? I'd have to go on an American site, get it shipped over the ocean and delivered. Then I'd have to figure out a way to actually play it, because of the whole DVD Region Code rubbish. I'd either have to get a multi-region DVD player to go with the DVD, or I'd only actually be able to use the bloody thing on my PC. Which'd suck, really. Anyway, the point I'm trying to get at's that Spongebob's available pretty much globally, and is recognised, and very popular, worldwide. As is Adventure time. My Little pony FiM... Isn't. Not so much, at least. It isn't as widely recognised, and generally isn't quite as iconic as those other franchises.
The Philly Thanksgiving Parade reportedly had an MLP float. I didn't bother to go find it though. If a show like adventure time got a spot, MLP could as well. Somebody paid extra methinks. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
I google'd it. Now. The Site I came across was somewhat visually broken, to the extent that getting any information from it was difficult. But it says "Parade 2013" on the site, and in the image's URL, so I'm gonna guess this is the one, before hoping with all my heart that it isn't. If it is, I think they got the wrong gen.
I couldn't find anything from the philly parade though I have seen it mentioned. (Why u bronies in philly no document MLP float?) I did, however, find an article about a 2011 float that allegedly had (well it has pictures) Twilight in a float. It doesn't really look like Twilight and it's not an MLP float (just a bunch of mixed characters) though can we take that as a win? http://www.mylittleponynews.com/2011/12/twilight-sparkle-in-toronto-santa-claus.html
That doesn't look like Philadelphia so I don't think that's it. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
