What scares me is that if SOPA passes, the tech used to block out sites, is the same China uses on their people... Before we know it, the US will become a socialist nation. Unfortunately the US government, including Congress, is filled with a bunch of old guys who don't see the true purpose of the internet. They see the internet as 'one huge piracy infested abomination'. Yes, piracy is everywhere and I wouldn't be mad if piracy was decreased, as I don't find myself downloading many pirated things. But they are going about it the wrong way. They are trying to shut down any site that is in ANY way connected to ANY piece of copyrighted material. This scares me because Youtube, and any sharing site could very well be blocked. It does say .com .org and .net wont be blocked, but knowing Congress, there are loopholes abound. The internet IS for sharing and freedom of information, not for taking down every site connected to copyrighted material. But a bunch of old guys who have never seen the internet for what it truly is will never understand that. I hope that the internet corporations will be able to fight back hard enough to push this bill into the grave it deserves. Actually, it doesn't deserve a grave, it deserves to be destroyed and never be seen again.
I really hope it does get vetoed and decided as unconstitutional. But I just don't see that happening... I think it will pass, but the large opposition will definitely have an impact on it, and in turn will hopefully get it changed enough where it wont completely destroy the internet.
This is probably why it will pass.
THIS BILL WILL... We really should fight it, somehow, if it DOES get passed.
lol so many vids about SMG13 xD The bill will be fought if it does go through, theres no doubt about that.
Very scary, yet informative video. It just shows how bad the internet will be if SOPA passes in its current form. He makes fantastic points on how to defeat piracy, and alternatives to simply blocking out the entire website. We need to challenge this bill. You can sign a petition here http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_internet/?cGfXocb And if you are a US citizen you are encouraged to contact your nearest representative and basically speak your mind as to why this bill is so infringing to constitutional rights. Guys, don't worry for now. I've got an email from one of the leaders against SOPA saying the vote was adjourned for now.
I'm relieved that somepony with the publicity and easy to follow speech like TotalBiscuit was able to put something together to highlight the danger of SOPA, I wasn't really aware of how devastating the effects could be before that video.
Tell me about it... I hate Congress so much, they don't understand that the Internet IS innovation... Ugh, when will they ever learn? Not only will this act destroy websites like YouTube, Facebook, and more, it will completely RUIN the chances of all independent developers out there. That is where the real innovation sparks from, the independent developers that come up with new amazing ideas. Not the big corporate businesses looking to find a way to make more money, that's not innovation.
I would just like to say this bill terrifies me. The implications of it on my hobbies, life and career are enormous. I would probably have to start a whole new career after spending several years on it.
