When I saw the bird burst in to flames like that, I thought "Well, have fun being banished form Ponyville, Fluttershy/Twilight!" This was before I learned it was a Phoenix,
Same here. lol but that thing was sure SCHWEET looking once it rebirthed itself. EDIT : It wasn't Celestia that was being a troll, BTW. It was that bird.
She should have explained that the bird had just little before it'll die. That would spare a day of worries for the rest of the ponies. :V
Not to mention she knew how the bird acted. She could have mention the bird could be an a**hole sometimes. And when it DID burst into flames, she was like "OH NOS," I'm a little confused by something though. How is it that the guards didn't know it was a phoenix?
A lost bird is a lost bird, they'd have to find it regardless if it was at it's prime or it's worst. Also note the direct instance earlier with the whole tea thing (and that she knew fluttershy had a soft spot for animals in need of help, and didn't explain the situation when it was obvious it was bothering her).
That is quite well planned out trolling, sending 2 guards out on a wild goose chase while at the same time prompting another individual to steal the bird in which the guards would be sent to search for so that in the end they'd all feel guilty when the bird burst into flames.
well, I don't know if anypony noticed, but there's breaking of 4th wall in episode (2nd one in season after famous pinkie pie's breaking in Over a Barrel). in scene where Fluttershy try to give medicine to Philimena, she turns towards camera and says "It always works". funny thing, I have that screen shot on my brony ID card, and after 3rd time watching that episode I've just noticed that. seems like it needed some time to get into my head xD
I can understand Celestia's need for some LOL's here and there, heck 99.999% of us feel that need from time to time. She even is silver tongued enough (besides cute and lovable too) to get away with making the Phoenix look like the actual prankster. From the other side, seeing how smooth and gentle Celestia is, I'm just startled how Fluttershy fear her retaliation (again Fluttershy is literaly feary of her shadow) so, mileage on other ponies may vary.
Well, I think all ponies fear Celestia in the way that we all fear those who have absolute power above us. But Celestia is kind and is often not the type of "ruler" that the everypony thinks her to be. She just likes a laugh here and there and take almost every opportunity to strike a joke or instill life lessons. As for this episode, yep, another one of the Trollestia moments. She purposely brought Philomena so just she could troll Fluttershy. LOL. Nah, that's just my take. But if you want an episode with Fluttershy at her best, go watch "The Best Night Ever" and see just how scary and crazy she really is deep down.
So, what's the lesson of this episode? "Don't care for injured animals?" "If you are a Reasonable Authority Figure that everyone respects, abuse that power by playing a cruel joke on the nicest person you know?" Also, ham sandwich. You can't give that stuff about Ponies being vegetarians when Applejack very clearly tried to eat a ham sandwich in this episode.
