By the end of the year I need to create a 20 page book about myself. So I'm going to start with the autobiography part. The requirement is that it needs to be at least 6 pages. Everything else is up to me. I'm a decent writer, but an autobiography sounds difficult. I'm not sure what I should include or what I shouldn't include, where things should go, etc. Does anyone here have any experience with biographies/autobiographies and how they should be structured? Thanks.
The most logical thing would be organizing it in chronilogical order (Time-wise). You can start with your birth, then your childhood years and so on, up to where you are right now. The beauty of an autobiography is that you can write it from your own perspective. Even if it doesn't make sense, it'll still seem reasonable, because after all, it's from your memory. Write about things that seem important in your life, such as a birthday, or the first day of school. Even if you can't think of anything, at least make it up. Remember, no one knows you better than YOURSELF. I hope this has helped you some.
A thing I've noticed that works with some memoirs, autobiographies, and whatnot, is starting it all off by explaining where you are in life, what you do for a living, and how you view the world as a whole. Then once that's all been established they tend to start from the beginning and allow the reader to piece together things and see how you got there yourself. Then again this is just a format really, and not a way to add more information, not much else I could add really.
You'll want key events in your life that define who you are to be there. As stated above, you can establish who you are, then start from the beginning and going over the experiences that led you to where you are. Sort of like a prologue.
You can do it chronologically, or structure it using a series of paragraphs that describe your personality. Or you could do both, and run through all your life-changing experiences. That's what most authors do.
Personally, I love it when things like this are structured how Otirrob described. Tell who you are and how you view the world. What are your own personal values that you try to live your life by? And then start from the beginning. It's like in movies where they show you the ending and then start from the beginning and end there again. But honestly, I think once you start writing, it'll continue and write itself =)
