I like that Nightmare Moon seems to be a part of Luna's persona, rather than being some cliche dark entity that possessed her instead. I was always more of a Nightmare fan than a "I'm so sorry" Luna fan, so I'm glad to see that the real Luna is a mix of those two very different personalities. Even with such little screen time, I now see her as one of the deepest characters in the series, and she's gone from a kind of unknown to one of my personal favorites.
Been waiting for this episode for sooo long now. And I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. For a kid's show, for this is or was? a kid's show, for them to live up to and go beyond people's expectations is pretty amazing, especially considering how long the wait was. Anyway, I like all 3 versions of Luna and like Scootaloo said, the latest Luna in this episode is a mix of the previous two extremes of her. And I for one have to say I think they did an amazing job of mixing them together and I can't believe how much detail they packed into the episode. Easily my favourite episode so far, hopefully we'll get to see even more of her soon. Maybe this could now be accompanied by one of Luna being the bad-ass she is.
You are aware she was using the Royal We, right? She wasn't saying "we" and "us" as a way of admitting that Nightmare Moon was another part of her, she was saying it because it was traditional.
Personally I think I prefer cannon version in terms of the fact you would be quite socially awkward after so long
I just seen the Closed Captioning version of the last episode (wow, released this sunday, fandom is awesome) Now I could understand all the speech, I see how similar Luna and Celestia are deep down, Luna with her Goa'ul voice (see Stargate) kinda shocked me, cannot imagine Celestia talking like that. But the night princess really cared, she really dind't appreciated being feared, she also shown too much temper, she only needed some friends.... D'aw... Anyways she looked less of a social inept than Twilight (at least Luna is eager to solve hers). Plothole? Luna told her voice was Canterlot's costumary towards commoners, but in S01E02 the old "Pony princesses castle" is placed in the Everfree forest, not in Canterlot, I assume Luna and Celestia lived there ages ago, there were stored the original elements of harmony. Could be just a sort of "Summer Palace" or something but...
I assumed the old castle was called Canterlot as well and was abandoned post-Luna/NMM's banishment. Either that, or maybe (like you said) it was their own personal "getaway" castle while Canterlot is the "official" castle.
Twilight called the old castle the "castle of the sisters" (paraphrasing a little there) in the pilot, so both princesses owned it. Luna might have spent a lot of time there, though. I believe in the theory-which I've seen other fans mention here and there--that somehow something Nightmare Moon did made the area surrounding the old castle "wild" (i.e. the wildlife in that forest able to sustain itself "on it's own" which is considered very odd among ponies ["Bridle Gossip"] who are used to running nature themselves ["Winter Wrap Up", et al.). Maybe there wasn't even a forest back then. Twilight does say that the castle is located in "what is now known as the Everfree forest", by which she probably means that area wasn't called that before or during the incident with Nightmare Moon a thousand years ago. Maybe the forest didn't start growing until after Nightmare Moon was banished? Is it because of Nightmare Moon or the confrontation between her and Celestia? Or maybe it was the Elements of Harmony themselves? /shamelessly over-analyzing a children's cartoon Back on-topic, Luna is adorable confirmed as canon! WARNING: REPEATS AUTOMATICALLY! I love how "Luna Eclipsed" was basically the episode where they taught Luna the fun of trolling/counter-trolling. I suppose it runs in the family. Now I'm hoping for an episode with Celestia and Luna pranking each-other! Could be hilarious~
I was wondering why the ever free forest was wild still. I remember the quotes for Bridle Gossip (One of my fave episodes) I always accounted it to being outside Celestia's control. Does Appleoosa have to moves its own weather? If not then why does only Equestria the only ones that have to?
I assume Appleloosa is in some part of Equestria (which, at least based on evidence from a few episodes, is the name of a country rather than the entire planet), or maybe on the outskirts. Since it seemed to be populated with buffalo rather than ponies before the settlers went there, weather probably runs naturally there. The Everfree probably isn't the only place that doesn't require ponies to run the weather and such. However, it's very close to areas that DO require pony magic, which is why it is so frightening to them.
Twilight makes mention of other places in Canterlot wrapping up winter with magic. However, Ponyville was founded by Earth ponies, so no magic was used, and it became traditional to manually wrap up winter, even when unicorns arrived. Therefore I assume that all other places where ponies are in residence are controlled either manually or with magic. It seems to me that Cloudsdale also produces the weather for all of Canterlot, since Pegasus ponies seem to generally come from there (Fluttershy had never been to Ponyville or anywhere else until she fell). If most or all of the Pegasus ponies are coming from Cloudsdale, I assume that most or all of the weather for Canterlot comes from there, as well.
Luna needs to be in more episodes. After 1000 years on the moon for doing something that apparently takes a day to fix, I think she's earned it. Side Note: Twiligt is legally not allowed to dress as a vampire.
Seems like a rather bad analysis to me for one reason. The lack of a reference to Luna or Celestias parents is not exclusive, rather it is true for more or less everypony in the series with the possible exception of twilight sparkle and Applejack. In fact I find the relative lack of parents in the series rather interesting. Also I don't think that there is ever any reason made clear in the series to assume that any "evil force" that transformed Luna.
I thought she was smaller at the end of season 1... On a side note: thanks Luna for proving that dragons and ponies can make hybrids.
Makes me wonder what Celestia really looks like... Uh, did you not notice the dragon wings, eyes, and tail/mane fins?
Yes, of course I saw the wings... but they aren't Dragon wings, they're BAT wings. I also assumed the wings were a costume piece or a spell. After all, where would Celestia hide such odd ponies for 1000 years? This is the first we've seen of them. As for the tails, they just looked styled or wrapped in something.
