SOPA and PIPA have received TONS of opposition all over the globe, pushing it back into the shadows. But now a new threat is arising, ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) and it's worse than SOPA/PIPA could ever be. This isn't just a US bill, it's a worldwide treaty, and gaining support. ACTA has been discussed and negotiated in secret for the past 3 years by 39 countries! Many countries including much of the UK and the US are keeping ACTA from the public! And what's worse? The negotiators aren't even elected representatives! They don't represent us, but apparently they are given the power to decide our laws. Behind our backs!

Not only does it do what SOPA would (blocking sites with ANY ties to copyright), it stretches outside of the net by banning LIFE SAVING generic drugs. Also ACTA will control and withhold seeds that could feed thousands of people, just for patents, threatening local farmers and food independence across the world.

The US and UK have already signed the treaty, but that doesn't mean they've won. It still needs to pass through the Senate and Parliament. This is where we come in, with enough support we need to prove to the world that this treaty must not be allowed to pass!

I can't believe things like this are even real. It makes me sick to know people out there care more about money then human life. Not to mention the fact they'd control everything. Freedom wouldn't even be a word anymore.

I am just as worried as you guys. If I recall right it will also give whoever runs acta the freedom to hack into private chats and if they find something that they don't like they can ban you from using chats.
I swear if this gets passed the internet as we know it will be destroyed. The thing that is pushing us into the future will be taken down and in my opinion the world will come to a standstill.

To them it is all about power and money. This must stop!

Internet is the least of concerns if ACTA is passed. I don't like the fact they can stop things that could save lives. How can you put money before people.

That also bothers me. The world is in a bad state already. There are people starving and dying and here they want to take control of medicines and food! It makes no sense

Like I said on EPR last night (or probably this morning), if ACTA passes, I'm gathering protesters.

Seriously though, who would be for this crap?
    I only know those against...

So let's get this straight, the corporate overlords are not satisfied with the billions they are already making, so they want to restrict the distribution of medicine, prevent people from growing certain crops and take control of the web. If they are willing to let millions of people die from disease and famine in order in order to gain more money, sorry I can't feel bad for these people losing money on piracy.

This bill has to be the black horseman of the apocalypse, famine and plague:angry:.

I couldn't agree more! The site has reached it's goal now of 750 000 signatures but that doesn't mean we should stop there. I swear if this thing goes through I hope Anonymous shuts down the EU's database or something. That is the only other thing I can think of that will open the worlds eyes.

Firstly, where did you get your information that the UK signed this piece of destructive trash, Mike? It's a revelation to me if the UK did...

When I heard of this thing, I honestly couldn't believe it. We made our voices known about SOPA and how outraged we could become about the Internet being threatened, what possessed them to start parading this almost immediately after SOPA was shelved? There is no palm big enough to place my palm into it. If they wanted to seem like a group of super-villains rearing around with a personal Death Star, they couldn't have achieved such a goal any better.

Come on! The only people benefiting from this thing are businesses that should be on the out anyway! Music and Record Companies. Music Artists get money from performing live nowadays and do perfectly well as a result. Either that, or royalties. No-one wants to by CD's as the Internet lets you hear music for nothing now. Heck! The Internet allows you to even by-pass the need for a record label to become well known. Just play, upload to Youtube, generate some buzz then make some merchandise. No shady business man needed there. They're on the way out and they don't like it, as evidenced in the Anonymous Video.

Even when they do start giving out fines for Piracy, the money's not going anywhere near the artists, as it should be but the IP holders. So now the Death Star has a Money Generator too.

Game Companies?...Not so much, as far as I can see, apart from perhaps in the downloadable versions of old games from that company (Virtual Console, Playstation Shop) and even then I'd have thought they'd got their business model wrong.

    Humans... ಠ_ಠ
Hippocrisy... injustice... I can't even put it to words.
    I feel powerless.

I signed the Avaaz petition. What else can we do?
I guess we'll have to wait it out and hope for the best.

You may feel powerless but at least you will know that you tried. and if this thing does get passed then the world will soon realise their mistakes when the death rates of millions of people shoots up because they are controlling medicine and food... if anonymous doesn't do something about it first...

Just watched the videos and signed the petition as well. There is just no more morals or ethics in this world and it just makes me really sad.
