good or bad tho this is just what tv shows do all the time they try something out and if its blown way out of proportion they never do it again simple as that derpy had her 5 minutes of fame and now the small part of the brony fandom probably killed her chance's of coming back as part of the story or even as a background char (and yes its possible they will go that far)
My issue is the basis for the argument is all wrong. There is WAY too much precedent for goofy characters, yet why is Derpy singled out as having a mental handicap in some way? I've always wanted to claw my eyes out watching stuff like Scooby Doo or Rocky & Bullwinkle because the denseness some characters exhibit is beyond staggering. Those characters are built wholly around these ideas for humor, where we built Derpy around them based on--surprise!--an accident. The overwhelming acceptance was never even negative for her.
Tabitha is starting to censor the word Derpy on her blog: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/02/more-derpy-crazyness-on-tabithas.html
I agree. This was never about censorship: it was about responding to some peoples worries that Derpy's appearance may have been insulting to disabled children. Whether those people were right or wrong (I'm actually pretty divided myself), censorship really has nothing to do with it.
I don't see why people are getting offended by her. I'm not a huge fan of her but I don't hate her either.
I really don't get why people think she's an insult. One guy on dA even said his daughter was mentally disabled and would be lucky to speak half as well as Derpy and he didn't find her offensive. EDIT: 100th post wooo
That is... astonishingly hopeful/sad. I wish the best for him and his daughter. I'm glad he does not take offense to her--she doesn't even come off as anything other than innocent or free spirited. (Think Dee Dee from Dexter's Lab, just not chaotic and destructive in her carefree ways... Well I guess that example doesn't really work. At least Derpy has good intentions.)
Found this on facebook. It was on the page "Bronies" (COPYPASTA) Interesting comment on the Derpy name business, from Equestria Daily: (COPYPASTA) Given that WLF still has shirts that have the apparently "mentally handicapped" pony on them, this Derpygate stuff is ''not'' about the portrayal of Derpy. ... It's a copyright problem - and why MLP editors and the like tend to avoid reading too much into fan works to avoid leakage of fan ideas into the show. For all purposes, "Derpy" is owned by 4Chan's "Dr. Foreigner" (the one that called out the legend of Derpy Hooves). Because they've used that, unless they have signed some type of deal with Dr. Foreigner, every sale of the episode and t-shirt with the "derpy" name technically means this person would be getting royalities; if he didn't, he could sue for copyright violations. I doubt this Dr. Foreigner would do that , but if I were a Hasbro lawyer and know that no such contract has been affirmed, heck yes I'd be pulling this as well. Now maybe they are chasing down some type of contract with the guy, and maybe he'll willingly give up the rights to the name to Hasbro. Alternatively, all they need to do is go back to the name "Ditzy" (which is Lauren's ergo Hasbro's creation), having Ashleigh rerecord ONE line ("Careful, Ditzy!" or "Careful, now!"), and everything would be free of the copyright issue - even if "Ditzy"'s mannerism follow the fandom. Note, that this doesn't apply if they don't actually name things: they can ship Lyra/Bon-Bon all they want on screen, and they put in the subtle Dr. Whooves reference as long as nothing's called out by name. That's why all those shouting "Luna Eclipsed referred FO:E with 'Little Pip'" should be well aware that having that insulating layer of where they don't read fanworks protects them.
^ makes a lot more sense than a lot of the theories out there. The lawyers advised them to remove 'Derpy' references until they can come to terms with Dr. Foreigner. They'll agree to a sum and eveything will be back to as it was.
The real problem is the violation of free speech. It is a constant problem and what has been done here is in fact unconstitutional and illegal. Now I know that our bill of rights has been effectively abolished as of about 10 years ago, yet the law does in fact still exist. All laws and actions, such as this one, that violate free speech need to be repealed. I really could care less if her name were Derpy or Ditzy. What I care about is my constitutional rights that are constantly being violated. I want to make a stand against this and use it as a focus to turn around this trend that our legal system has been on the past 10 years.
Good news, Derpy has returned to Welovefine. http://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/02/derpy-returns-to-we-love-fine.html
Hmm - did I miss something? I was under the impression that Hasbro was just trying to claim that that pony with the name Derpy was their property so Welovefine couldn't use it without proper bribes - er, payment? But, I'll admit, I just woke up a while ago and only scanned the articles. I haven't heard anything about getting rid of Derpy - where'd the heck did that come from?
Genesis has the most likely correct answer above. Hasbro circled the wagons until they can straighten it out. Just lots of red tape to get through. - The bureaucracy is expanding to accomodate the expanding bureaucracy.
If Hasbro has claimed the name of Derpy, that is a good thing, maybe we can expect Derpy merch in the future. That being said, is not Derpy's disorder mainly bad eyesight? That alone would explain her clumsiness, I don't think she is mentally challanged at all.:derpe:
I think we all need to calm down. Are we really going to freak out over rumors? If the name "Derpy" was such a big deal, and is "insulting" I believe that Hasbro would have made a public statement apologizing by now. Personally I think it's legal issues with USING the fandom name Derpy. Hasbro lawyers probably need to sort things out, and until then the episode will be temporarily unavailable.
