I have seen the former statement many times, and, more often than not, it is in fact about those specific people. If there IS a reply that blames America, then it is likely by the same person, not by different people. This creates the illusion of multitude, but does not actually constitute it. Confirmation bias is a powerful thing, no? xkcd 258
That's the thing: EVERY country is full of bigots. It's not ok to pick on ethnic or orientation-based groups so then why do people find it ok to spout off about America? If I started saying things about say, the UK where I have been to, people would rightfully be upset. If it were just one person doing that all the time I never would have posted this, but it IS multiple people, I can assure you.
Because America makes itself out to be a shining star in the land of darkness. Thing is, we're far from that now, a shadow of our former glory. I hate to admit it, but it's true. America has a set example from the world: People have a right to criticise it for being stupid when they make themselves out to be the smartest/nicest in the world. If I said I was the smartest man on earth, no doubt you would challenge that if I did something wrong. That is what this 'stereotyping' is. It's just standards not being met.
All countries have a lot of people that ruin the reputation so we just have to ignore them. I find biggots amusing because half the time they don't know what they're on about. A filipino guy I know got called the n-word by someone which I find amusing. Also, a lot of people in my school think that I am black, when I am actually Indian.
need i point out the countless times the french mock other country's need i point out how mexico sent there military power to run into random house's they suspected to be drug cartel and just shoot up the place? No, so i what i think everyone needs to do is just shut up, and go back to talking about pony's. so everyone shut up about which country's great and which one isn't cause here's the truth everyone every country on this planet, every political power, is just a big lump of S**t
The thing is, to many people it IS a shining star becuase where they're coming from barely has clean drinking water. Are the street's lined with gold like immigrants were told back in the 1800's of course not. But my mom, who is an immigrant, is one of the most psychotically "Amur-rican" people I know becuase even though she was from a first-world country, she had much more opportunity to grow and her children had a better chance to thrive here. Does that hold true in places like, say, Canada? I'm sure it does. I have traveled around a lot, to very different places and it made me appreciate where I'm from a lot. Do other countries to things better? Sure do. Do they have our problems? Some do some don't. But my point in posting this was not to be like "Amur-rica, feck yeah!" but everyone is so concerned with others' feelings when it comes to so much, why should anyone here's feelings not be taken into account? And I'm not the only one, as a few others who've posted in this topic have supported the idea that discrimination is discrimination. Putting down a country and its people is the same as putting down a race or orientation and shouldn't be going on.
Because, clearly, claiming without foundation that every country is composed of bigots is in no way bigoted in itself. Not to mention that only said bigots would speak out, and most people would just not do anything, this creating a rather shoddy illusion of a judging mindset. Also ^^^^ has a point in those last 2 sentances. THis post conveniently brings me back to my original point. That is to say, this is getting no one nowhere.
everyone has there opinions and everyone has there bigotry's i just mock others when they know its a joke and the same for the country's so i support Novella's original point of this thread, but now the threads gone to a explanation as to why U.S is no longer great so your right about this going nowere, which is why i suggest this thread being closed seance the the original concept of this thread has been long but killed
I think we can pretty much agree that humans suck and ponies rule. America is pretty powerful and therefore has alot of attention drawn to it. I have heard really bad stuff about it, but intrestingly enough, the sources are american. Are americans generally self hating? But when you think about it, the United States can't be as bad as it is sometimes made out to be, if it were, SOPA would have passed, instead the people pushed it back, that my friends is a good thing. I apoligize if I am sometimes bitter, but I don't have much faith in humanity and I hate bigots more than anything else. However ponies have improved my mood and I am gradually getting less hate-filled. Bless them ponies, they are the light of the world.
It's not that Americans are "self-hating", it's that many feel that the government is only caring about money versus the people, and that's partially true. The government should be putting the people as its first priority but... I don't mean to sound outright, but they really don't have a choice. The economy is pretty *squee!*ty right now and people are asking for money that the US doesn't even have. There will always be poor and those who suffer from it, but there isn't much the government can do as of now. I don't want to sound mean, but its impossible to help everyone. The US needs to obtain economic stability before tending to the people, or else we'll just fall even further into the pit we're stuck in.
not to mention all the money were giving away to these charity's made to help people in other country's that hate us
The money that goes to charity is literally <1% of government spending. Most spending goes toward pensions, healthcare, and defense/military funding.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-06-25-charitable_N.htm 2007 we gave more then 295billion in U.S dollars to charity and the spending only went up over the years
While spending that much doesn't help at all, it is still a relatively small amount compared to the rest of the spending. Expected spending in 2012: http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/total_spending_2012USbn
Nearly 2 trillion is spent on pensions and health care. The only problem is that cutting pensions and health care isn't a good idea, so it poses a very difficult decision. Total Spending............ $6,282.0 billion (40.3%) Pensions............ $1,017.3 billion (6.5%) Health Care............ $1,080.1 billion (6.9%) Education.............. $941.0 billion (6.0%) Defense........... $903.3 billion (5.8%) Welfare........... $679.2 billion (4.4%)
Isn't our budget $12 trillion? Honestly, we need to cut back military/defense costs. Education is suffering just as badly as everything else.
you should recall that allot of our money went to a long flanking battle full of nothing but gorilla tactics (which are expensive) which costed way, way more then a full scale war would have not a shock were in the craps after what 10 or so years of that?
