Hmm... Even if they are taking most of the money, I think the fact that Kony is plastered all over the internet will help it to spread beyond just the Invisible Children program. I think the massive publicity hit will attract attention from charities and organizations that actually care. Regardless if Invisible Children is a scam, Kony is being spread around like wildfire.

Can't deny it won't have some kind of effect, but what the US has done so far has shown minor interest at best. 100 soldiers were sent there as advisers (given strict orders not to participate in Kony's removal, acting only in self defense) to help him track him down and nothing more. Maybe this push for his infamy will cause a greater effect, even if someone capitalizes on it.

It's like the business of war. Someone unrelated is always making a profit.

I knew about this child-soldier issue and Joseph Kony since back when my other explained them to me. And you know what? I'm glad this is getting attention. I'm seriously pleased.

I have some friends on Facebook who support awareness about this issue, and others who say things like, "Why are people only getting excited about this now?", "It's annoying", "Tell where Uganda is before you act like you care." My responses to those points are detailed below.

    1. True, it would have been nice if everyone knew about it since day one, but you weren't born knowing either, so don't judge them. Seriously, as long as they care now, why should that matter to you?

    2. If you find these posts that say "Kony 2012" annoying, you might want to consider rethinking your morals. You're annoyed that people have decided they want to raise awareness about an important issue? Stop acting like a spoiled child.

    3. We need to know where people are to care that they're dying by the thousands? There are so many things wrong with saying that.

I really hope I didn't offend anyone. That's just my two cents.

I'll say nothing of Invisible Children.

That's a really cool point. I think we (our governments) should give the entire issue a much more comprehensive look-through if we actually intend to help. Also, like she says, we should offer our help, not push it on them because we think they always need it.

I say we just stab the guy in the gut a few times. Then, in a week, patch him up.

    Repeat ad nauseum.

AND THEN PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE.

just to put in news from little corner of world:
RTL TV (one of 3 biggest TV stations in Croatia) had Kony report on their central news, talking about Kony, Invisible Children movement and whole internet campaign.

Wishing violence upon someone who commits violence makes us no better than the man at fault.
Let him be judged by the law, not by vigilante sayings. If he is to be put to death (And knowing Uganda, he will be.) then so be it. But don't soil our names by saying you want to 'Go Cupcakes' on Kony. He may be a terrible person, but if he wants violence, do not give him violence. It makes us even worse than Kony.

This is exactly my point. Don't say such things. They make us sound like unrefined brutes.

This thread underscores the ignorant and spurious nature of our generation. Let's dump money into a pop cause and clamor about injustice without seriously investigating the issue or trying to understand the regional cultural/political/economic situations.

The film makers have scammed the lot of you for over a million dollars for an issue that doesn't even exist anymore. Do you guys even realize that Kony has been starving in a Congolese forest ever since he was indicted in 2005? He is not even in Uganda anymore. The LRA hasn't been functional in the last seven or eight years. As in, it's a dead issue.

How about we actually try to understand the situation instead? Part of the problem in Uganda and many other African countries is that they are so dependent on foreign aid that the populace becomes dependent on a corrupt system of the controllers of this aid, being warlords. The donation ends up harming these people in the long run, but I'm sure the convenience and trendiness isn't lost on the latte-sipping Westerners.

Get a clue. This is like watching the Darfur hysteria all over again.

Exactly. This is old news. We should instead focus on the more important parts of this situation.

    ^ This.

After watching the video (and I'm not going to deny I was moved by it), I did some research into the whole fiasco.
Kony 2012 is a viral marketing scam. Joseph did some bad stuff, sure, but like was said, he has not been seen, nor has the LRA been functional for a good seven years.
It has been believed that Invisible Children have used 70% of the donations for personal salary and film marketing and production, the rest, being distributed to Uganda. A country where the man they're looking for isn't even there doing the said things.

Never wanted to touch the "Action kits" and that lark anyway, I don't want this trend littering the streets.
That is what it has become in my eyes.

Yea I've been researching it myself as well. And the news sure does love talking about the video. Boy I wonder why... There's speculation as to whether or not Kony is even alive. I'm so glad that I haven't been supporting this scam campaign. It disgusts me that they'd use such a sensitive issue for their own personal gain. Oh wait...that's just like every other business and shady organization.

I was just making a wise crack. But I still think they're disgusting for taking all this money from people thinking they're gonna catch Kony.

I understand that, but I don't think Invisible Children is caring all that much. I'm hoping that with all of the publicity going on, some other organizations will help out as well.
