I've noticed some members that joined way back in March last year (when we made this website) have the user title "Junior Member" due to not that much posting, and some members that joined this year already having the title of "Senior member" due to quite actively posting on the website. I know we didn't really have a solution back in the day (or didn't actually search for one, i forgot what it was) but i think the system of "senior, member and junior" user titles should be changed from post count to age (if that is in any way possible). I think, this way, we'd do justice to some of the great people that left this website, that helped build it, and motivate the newer users to stay much longer around and make them give their part to developing this community in an even brighter light.
Why age? Like the years they've be alive age? I suggested forever ago that it should be based on the time you're active. You know based on the months you've be here. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
Age as in how long they're around the website, not how long they're alive in real life. Pretty much what you suggested.
You forgot? You were the one that implemented the current system yourself back when you were an administrator. You sent a VM to Grey Nightmare: As well as: I remember after you did that too. I personally wasn't too happy with it, and made this reply here: >http://www.everypony.com/forums/showthread.php?38-Site-Suggestions&p=21631&viewfull=1#post21631 In that TL;DR of a post, I briefly cited my concern about the seniority of members. I agree that it being based on seniority would be better than how many posts one has. So, I personally agree with this suggestion.
It might clear up the misinterpretation of one's status with the post count from forum games back when that contributed.
As am I. I was thinking the same when I first joined. I couldn't understand how Xan was a senior member despite him joining the day after I did:derpe:
Is there a way to make it count days you have a post or "active days"? There could be members that joined a long time ago, but didn't really post or add to the forums and then they come back months down the road. Because of when they joined, they would be considered 'senior members' when they had been absent from the board for a long period and had not contributed much. Just playing a bit of devil's advocate on this and an unintended consequence.
You obviously didn't read it the right way. I said that we didn't find a good solution, not that we didn't do anything. I said that i forgot if we were looking for such a solution (an user-title system solely based on the amount of days one has been around), not that I, the retarded idiot that i am, changed the "base user title on amount of posts one has" system. The increased amount of posts was just a placeholder until we find a much better solution, since having users with +100 posts be Senior was OBVIOUSLY A STUPID THING. I think having +2500 for senior is way better than +100. I now suggest that we go on and, somehow, change it based on the amount of days/weeks/years/millenniums one has been around. If possible, in percentage (90% of all days = Senior, for instance.). When i was admin, back in the day, this forum was tons of times smaller and we didn't have a clue on how to do this. I am pretty sure there's a couple of people around here that know what and how to do. If not, then keep this suggestion/idea as part of the "To-do" list of Everypony.
Quite Frankly: I don't care. It is just a piece of text above your avatar. You shouldn't care about that in the first place.
I wish there were more post count ranks that actually had to do with mlp. (Like I used to be a part of a Pokemon forum and they had like Boulder Badge rank or some Pokemon name rank). I know for a fact that vB has the capability to have user rank bars/images, I'd love to design those or at least have default ones. Having a cool Fluttershy rank or something may entice people to post rather than just Junior Member. Staff should have custom ones/people could donate to Everypony to have a custom rank image.
I believe there is already a title nomination system in place now isn't there? Besides, like what many others have said, it's just some text over your avatar.
I'm sure there are many others that enjoy their little titles. It's more of a suggestion to please everyone. If a new title system is ever implemented, those who don't care will continue to not care, and those who do will now be happy.
Saikyo, quite frankly, this does not benefit me in any way. It benefits the users of Everypony, and i am sure there's a bunch of them that'd enjoy this system. Am i supposed to suggest something only if I care about it? Enough people have been asking for it, i guess making a thread about it won't hurt.
I like the titles based on time. Danvid became a senior member in about 2 weeks while it took lupr almost 6 months. But then the down side is that people that joined early and never post would have a high "rank" name because of when they joined. The whole nominating users for titles feels like the return of the rep system. But shouldn't long term members get some sort of reward? I say yes, but nominating people to me just feels like a big populairty contest. Me personally, I don't care what happens with all this junk, but I like to throw my 2 cents in. I still have my brain as a rep system, so I'm set -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
I used to run a Sgt. Frog forum and had little rank stars (like this one: ) along with "____ Member" . Maybe some current members here are pretty indifferent about it, but for new members, it is an incentive to post more. Personally, I think the text usertitle by itself is boring.
That's exactly how I interpreted it. Hence why I posted my old reply to it. I see. A simple contextual misunderstanding on my part then. I'd just like to point out that you were given every opportunity to succeed (lol Portal quotes) that I didn't entirely disagree with the decision (Not saying you said I did, just a minor point for clarification purposes). Just as I said in my previous post, I agree with you. Do you, or anypony else, have any suggestions in terms of the timespans to differentiate said ranks? (This is assuming it can be implemented, of course). As in how many weeks/months before somepony ranks up from each category? I hate to beat a dead horse/pony (because I don't condone equine cruelty), but that's coming from the same person, myself included, that was concerned about another thing that was above one's avatar, except it wasn't text. Hmmm... I like the sound of this idea already, personally. I think the default titles of "Junior Member," "Member" and "Senior Member" are, in the words of Pinkie Pie, BOOOOORING. Something more MLP:FiM related would be interesting, even if it wasn't using images, but only text titles. There is. That can be found here: >http://www.everypony.com/forums/showthread.php?3803-Everypony-Custom-User-Titles-Nominations However, this thread is about those that don't happen to get those nominations. I, personally, have always liked the idea of custom user titles for everyone— as in, everyone can make their own title. I believe a member on here actually suggested that once before. It's a shame it was never implemented. I used to be a member of a forum that was run by vBulletin and custom titles were enabled, and there were virtually no issues, except for maybe the minor infraction of someone using "M0derator" ("Moderator" was an existing usergroup, and thus, could not be used) as their title in an attempt to impersonate staff, or something inappropriate (Profanity, for example, and such things can be moderated by real mods anyway)— basically something that isn't out of the scope of issues related to the avatars, sigs, etc., that we have now. And for those of you using the "don't care" perspective, users that don't care don't even have to use any new system that's implemented anyway, or can just ignore a new automated system altogether if it were used. After all, my user title won't be affected, provided I remain a part of staff.
Well, i think something like: 0% - 10% of all days ever since Everypony exists - Junior member (basically, a month and a couple of days, if this was implanted like right away) 10% - 25%/30% of all days ever since Everypony exists - Young member (now, it'd be around like 40 - 120 days) 30% - 60%/70% of all days ever since Everypony exists - Member (4 - 7 months) 70% - 90% of all days ever since Everypony exists - Senior member (now, around 7 - 10 months) 90% - 100% of all days ever since Everypony exists - Elder member (10 months - full year) Of course, as time progresses, the amount of days to earn each rank would get bigger and bigger, and, for instance - if this forum was 10 years old (or reaches that age (hopefully it will)), then even the members that joined a year after the creation of this forum would get the User title of Elder member. On the hive (the website Grey, Twif and I use(d)) there were two user titles: One above and one below the Avatar. The one above was free to edit (basically, you could've used any word. Even the words "mod" etc.). The one below, however, could not be edited by anyone but the Admins. The one below was your rank. Ordinary posters/users/no staff members didn't have the user title that was below the avatar. Probably one great idea would be to (if possible) do this same system - You can have your own user-title, and if you are a staff member, you'd have a rank. This would probably be better than the "Senior-junior-fetus user title" system - if you wanted to know how long a user has been around, you'd just look at his join date, right? That'd be the real way to interpret who's senior and not.
I don't know if I like the whole percentages of time Everypony has existed. I think it should be a set time span, so it'd be more fair.
