Sometimes I need to see an episode twice to really get a good grasp of how I felt about it (maybe that's weird, but whoever said I was normal?), but even so, I liked the episode. Nice to go into some new territory, story/world/character-wise. The trench scene, the dragon costume, and Spike's belly flop all had me in stitches. Interesting to have a new pet, but if tradition holds, we won't be seeing much more of the baby phoenix.
Well, Rainbow does not like to show her emotions openly, but it is clear from her later actions she does care about Spike. It could be said Dashie a better pony than she would admit, her sometimes insensitive attitude is really only a way to cover up feelings so she can maintain her image. This episode demonstrates very well what I like about Dash, her struggle between upholding her self image and showing her true more senitive self is something I think many bronies can identify with. I can say from this epiode that there i no way that Spike and Rarity does not have some kind of relationship. I liked this episode, great character development. But I think it is weird Fluttershy is still afraid of dragons, I mean, she could dominate one instantly and has done so already, between Dragonshy and assertiveness training, she should be braver by now, but I guess this is Flutterhy for you .
To be honest I was expecting more worldbuilding regarding dragons in this episode, I guess I need to remember the show's primary demographic.
I LOVE IT! my favourite part was when the teenager dragons try to catch those baby phoenixes... Dragons can swin on lava... AWESOME! I hope to see more about that baby phoenix and I like the lesson of this episode. also, I found funny that those baby phoenixes sound like parrots.
I was hoping for that too, but I don't think this episode's plot could have fit in that sort of thing. Still, we did learn a bit about how non-Spike dragons act. I don't think all dragons are as mean as the teenage ones that appeared in this episode, but oh well. That being said, I hope to learn more about dragons in a future episode. Maybe in Season Three? But yeah, I loved this episode. The character interaction was superb, the appearance of the phoenixes was a nice surprise, and I find it interesting that Spike now has a companion of his own now...though, I wonder if they tried to return the egg to it's parents or not...
There's is one part of this episode that I think is underlooked. That's the part where Spike didn't crush the phoenix egg. Do you realize exactly what Spike had to fight in order to not crush that egg? Not only did he overcome peer pressure, he overcame his inner dragon telling him to crush the egg. Because as we all know, dragons are known for crushing eggs. Spike's always been my favorite character and this episode made me like him more, especially for having the courage to stand up to his own kind to do what's right. That and when he called the manes his family, it touches my heart every time. If any of you have read my journals, you know how long I've wanted to hear Spike say that.
Hmh, I guess this episode was kinda meh, but then again, I'm not a big spike fan. Plus, 50% of the reason I watch is because of ponies being cute, so when there are only three ponies, it's kind of a "meh" episode for me.
