I suggest an off-topic section of the forum be created. Everything non-pony related/EP related can go there and reduce the chance of useless threads popping up in the General Discussion section. Such 'useless threads' could be created there without having to worry about it having to be constructive in a way so as to prevent as many locked threads.

I wouldn't go there much, but it'd be useful to have so people who want to have a few laughs can go there.

Hmm... The General Chat does sometimes become clogged with random threads. I second having an Off-Topic forum thrown in. Although I wonder how much use it'll get.

Depends if they make posts count there or not, text games dropped massively in activity when they removed posts going up. I really wished the art section was used more, one on goes there ever.

I think the Offtopic thing wouldn't work. It would become polluted with random crap, I can think of some examples but I'm not mentioning them for fear of upsetting anyone.

I agree. This would give the forum a great rise in spammers

I guess that makes sense too... But what's stopping people from posting nonsense in General Chat currently? At least with Off Topic it would go into a different forum.

There are good points on both sides. I agree but at the same time. I wonder how much it will be used.

    The mods doing their jobs.

That depends, if it counts towards post counts, things like the last to post game would be abused to boost. If post don't add to your count people won't use it.

    Hah...yeah I'm stupid.

Unfortunately true... but I'm gonna be honest, I wish the General Chat thread wasn't so spammy. I'd actually like to hold normal conversations for once there, but that's becoming rather difficult. But I don't think it's possible to disable post count for individual threads.

For one thing, the general chat thread has a mind of it's own. That in and of itself could be moved to the off-topic section due to the fact that it literally has little if not at all to do anything to benefit the site in any way. All it is is just a random assortment of posts that contribute towards post count (Which it really shouldn't). The GCT in and of itself serves no purpose but yet it isn't locked like the 'useless' threads that are created every so often.
I at least recommend finding some way to eliminate post counts on the GCT, and if not possible, creating said section and moving any 'useless' topics to the Off-Topic section.
It saves time and prevents people from getting angry that their threads are locked.

It's a general chat, what do you expect.

It's a place to talk about stuff without making a new thread, I intend to use it for that same purpose after I post this reply to you.
hence the name general chat. People post whatever in there to spark up a general chat.

The general chats purpose is to allow users the ability to post something like a random gif that is awesome without having to making a whole new 'useless' thread for that one thing. As for calling threads useless, isn't that up to mods to decide. Most of the episode discussion, art sub forum and music sub forum are barely used. They could be call useless because no one touches them. If we have a off topic sub forum, the only thing it will do is

    A) if post counts is allowed in there, it will be spammed to no end

B)if post counts aren't allowed in there, it will be ignored by most people. Making it useless in itself.

'Useless' as in serves no purpose, Pixel.

The General Chat Thread isn't really 'chat' since you can't even carry a decent topic there for 6 posts until someone says something about an event that nobody would really care about.

The General Chat Thread serves no purpose except to spam for post counts, really. Think about it. The Forum Games section died when posts counts were removed from there. The GCT Might actually be able to have the Chat in it's name actually mean something.

Did I mention I love your avatar...?

Just had to make sure we didn't leave any holes open.

I understand what you mean, but it is people just generally chatting. I think my attempt to inform any that cared about me live streaming has already gone ignored. At least I didn't make a whole new thread for a maybe.

But then all the members that use it no longer care about it. I know that's what you'd like. Eliminate some members from the chat and get a real conversation, but it's like me with the text games. I no longer play them because they don't show up on the front page and I'm to lazy to hunt them down.

It is nice, isn't it. Rain beat me to my own idea.

You're overthinking things. People post in the GCT because they want to say stuff, not to increase their post count.

I agree with this and instead of worrying if people will not post in the new area or not give it a short trial run. Basically the admins set a post amount that they would like to see hit in order to keep the section. If the post count is not hit then the idea and section are scrapped without any repercutions or outraged members. If the section does hit the reqiured post limit then by all means it should stay.

I actually really like the idea of an Off Topic section, and to be honest, it really shouldn't be counted towards post count.

When the forum games lost a lot of activity due to the fact that it no longer contributes to a users cumulative posts across the forum, it really said something. If a lot of user are posting off topic of things for post count instead of for fun or general discussion, then they're there to raise an imaginary figure that holds no real meaning. If what we know about the general chat thread holds true (which is a hard thing to say in itself), then simply moving it to a section that results in less post count won't have an affect on those who post in it really because as it was stated in this thread earlier, people are there to discuss things in general.

Simply put, if you're posting simply for a high post count, you're posting for the wrong reason and if a high post count really means that much to some, then we should attempt to raise the quality of said posts by having them be slightly more meaningful and on topic rather than a mess of words and inside jokes. The forum is meant for discussion and to have fun, not to see who has the biggest internet ego.

    Posts count is silly.
I long since suggested it be hidden.
    Kinda like rep.
    Only different.

I will say that once the general chat is up (the general chat being the real time chat that will come up with the RP chat), it's most likely the general chat thread will be locked and deleted. Also, the general discussion area is where the 'off topic' stuff is. I wouldn't be one to judge what is 'useless' or not. If there is an interest in it, then it's not useless. If not, it'll die like any other useless thread.

    Also, what Zephyr said.

This. If boosting your postcount really makes you feel superior to other members I can only pity you.
I have a horrificly low post count, considering my position here but never once have a I thought no one knows who I am or the answer is to make it higher.

    Quality > Quantity

Otherwise, I'm an off topic section isn't out of the question as general discussion is getting quite a pounding..

Well, the reason it'll be locked and/or deleted is because the general chat thread's purpose would be mostly moot as those who use it can use the General Chat room. That being said, I understand that there will be users either annoyed or angry at its removal. Chances are we'll make a new one that's going to be moderated more effectively.
