That would be me, naturally. Besides, why can't we just move the GCT to the possible Off Topic section and moderate it there?
As some others have said to me on Skype, an off topic section would be hell on our moderators to actually keep track of. However on the flip side I believe removing the GCT isn't such a good idea either. What I propose is to separate the GCT to a subforum in which post count will not add be added, and to not lock/delete it. The reason for my decision is based largely on the fact that a majority of users might not be able to access it from their phones. Even on my iPod when I accessed the chat in progress it was unbearably laggy and hard to keep up with. In short, for those of us with crappy phones I suggest simply relocating the thread. We can have our cake and eat it too.
Is it so wrong to post a lot and enjoying seeing my post count go up if my posts are relevant and helpful?
It's just that I spend most of my time in the GCT because that's where a large number of members spend a lot of their time. There, they typically go to vent their stress are share their stories and experiences because that's just what happens to be on their mind at the time. I love being there to share in their joy and jubilation. I love being there to lend them a shoulder to cry on should they require it, and to offer encouraging words and hugs to those who are down. I love being their to share in their jokes and laughter, and to brighten everyone's day with pony-related images, even if only slightly. Now you are to tell me that these posts will no longer count as far as the board is concerned? I do not post simply for the sake of raising my post count, but the post count does help me to feel as if I'm contributing something, anything, to this community. I have never made a single spam post, and only occasionally double posted by accident, which I have always quickly combined the new with the old and deleted the new. Yes, I do like to see myself with a high post count, but there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that. All my posts have been on topic, relevant, and relatively helpful in nature. So I spend 80% of my time here in the GCT. That's where most of the people go and I enjoy being there for my friends.
I'd like to add that there's nothing wrong with being proud of a high post count. But just using it as a motivation for action is silly.
@Yami - Would you stop doing the same if your post count wouldn't go up? Wasn't it considered doing this when the Forum Games stopped counting towards your post count?
He might continue, but how many others would still go to the general chat. I'd say not many, it would be like the text games.
I'd consider stopping simply for the general principal of the forum essentially telling me my posts are worthless because they're not in a specified thread. But no, I wouldn't stop. I like to think I'm not that petty. But like pixel said, it may not make me stop, but it will make others stop. And if it makes others stop, then there will be less people around to talk to and share experiences with. And if there are less people around, there's less incentive for me to post. This whole idea simply rubs me entirely the wrong way and I'm afraid I wholeheartedly disapprove.
Hmm. I've been thinking about this some more. I'm starting to feel that general chat should stay where it is. It's already been said 50 times before, but as pixel and a few others said, it will stop getting use and may give people the incentive to start making threads about what they want to say so that people will see them, ultimately creating more spam and more work for moderators. In terms of post count, lets not use that as the main deciding factor. It's a fact of life that there are people who exploit it. We don't need to take away something because a select few use it to exploit their post count, which is a shame really.
The GCT will likely be locked and deleted when the chat system that will accompany the RP Chat appears. So this thread is useless to talk about any more. KEEP IT CLASSY.
So once this super fun chat goes up what I'm I supposed to do on my phone. My mobile browser sucks loading this site and it can't use RT chats. I doubt this RT chat would work on my app. Which means when I'm at work I'll have no way to talk to people accept threads. So doing this will pretty much remove my presence from the forum. Forgot to mention, I hate RT chat things, that's the reason I never go on the radio.
It's called creating topics that interest you and could potentially hold interest for others. As Foxy previously suggested, sooner or later they will come up with a GCT that will be properly moderated and less trafficky than the one we have now. And judging by the poll, not counting towards posts.
And what about people like me. I'm mostly on at when I'm at work. Even if I could load the RT chat, there is no way I could keep up with it. So should I create a thread called Pixel's night time talky thread for when I'm at work. As I already said, if the GCT gets locked, my forum presence will be gone. I enjoy this site, why should I not be allowed to talk to others because I'm at work.
