That harrowing moment when you've lost important data, either a single file or an entire hard drive... I record LoL gameplay and lost what would've been my pinnacle game for what I do. Worse so, my capturing program actually deleted all recent relevant matches as well. Nothing short of a hard drive failure could top how angry I was. In the past, I lost important artwork in a hard drive fire. What sorts of things have you lost as a result of being unable to save/hardware or software failure?
I've honestly lost countless school projects due to things such as this. Perhaps not so bad, but it does get on my nerves. Most recently, I lost about 50 hours worth of Adobe After Effects work. This was due to the autosave feature not working properly for whatever reason, and after a while, the program stopped responding for no reason I can think of. Kinda my fault for not manually saving regularly.
I've become pretty anal about keeping data safe, the important stuff anyway. I've constantly got an external HDD making backups every hour, another external drive for a bootable clone and then I'll usually put whatever I'm currently working on in dropbox. The worst that's happened to me is when I lost my USB stick at school, I think I lost two assignments, I managed to remember most of them somehow though. Worse than any drive failure though is when one of my teachers lost a drawing I did (technical drawing not artistic) so then I had to redo it, but then he lost the new one and I had to draw it for a third time!
I sorta had this. I messed up Windows majorly, but was able to still use Ubuntu (the only other OS I had at the time), and got a mate to bring his TB external and copy the most important stuff I wanted over. the rest (about 300-400gigs) was wiped, but majority I have gotten back now, it was more media stuff than saves and important files that were lost.
Not too long ago, My harddrive in my laptop became unreadable. All my important documents were backed up but I lost all my emulators! But it's nowhere as bad as what others have experienced. My Dad almost lost all his work when he compressed his whole harddrive so the files required for booting were inaccessible. All we needed to fix that was another cable though. But it had all of his important documents on there, so it was worth the £40 we spent on the cable.
I've lost alot of my school documents because my freaking computer started to malfunction. So I moved it over to my last foster home's computer. We had a few fights, I wasn't allowed on the house computer for ANYTHING. They've probably deleted everything by now. Whatever. I still have my ponies (although I lost my last pony folder. GRR!)
I drew a picture of an elephant for a school thingie. It became corrupted... I had to draw the whole thing again!! :'(
hmm, well, I've never lost any significant data. I always keep backups of data that's important to me. Windows partition, linux partition (so if one os fails, I can still boot other and recover data) + external hdd + some data on pc's hard drive.
I had finished a project for World History, and I had forgotten what time it was, so I had to go to my next class. A teacher walked in with a principal and turned it off. Forfeiting my progress on the project. Then, when the project was due THAT SAME DAY, he asked where it was, I said he turned it off, preventing me from saving it, calls what I said 'A Lie', and proceeds to take computer privelages away for the rest of the school year. So yeah. School is idiot.
I'm still raging over the recorder crashing. Despite having hope, none of my friends recorded that match as well. I was in a magnificently good mood while playing (despite losing horrendously) and said many things I wished to go over. In the end, we actually turned the game around and won against all odds (well, mostly just 3/5 of us). Sigh... I lost an MMZ wallpaper I have never been able to find again. I constantly save my writing, going no more than two paragraphs tops before saving again. Every month or two, I backup every single fanfic related file in an external USB. I don't have issues with losing anything else, surprisingly.
I've had a few viruses (virusi?) corrupt Windows so bad in the past that I couldn't access my files, so I had to format my drive and lose a lot of schoolwork/game saves a few times. Nothing major though, and the last few times it happened I managed to use a disk to launch Ubuntu and recover all my files before formatting. Since then I've upgraded my PC, and everything's been running smoothly. I always back up work on a memory stick/school notebook to be safe though.
It seems that I've been graced with the "luck" of constant hard drive failures. I've been through so many harddrives, and dealing with data loss is such a pain... Currently I'm planning on getting an external harddrive sometime very soon.
My brother once saved over one of my Kingdom Hearts save files, does that count? He also did it on my Skyrim file. I used to not put much stock in multiple save files, but then I took an overwrite to the....aw, screw it. As for academic stuff, no. I keep my work nice and safe.
My hard drive got messed up once when I first had my laptop, I had to send it into Toshiba and they replaced it. Oh yeah, I lost my very first jump drive. SO much good stuff on there. Just pure, nostalgic, gold. Lost.
Oh my word! I wouldn't have a brother left if I were you... Anyway, I've had articles for the Leather Bound Book or RP posts vanish on regular occasions. I tend to write these things on the site I'm planning to post them too and a slip up can cause an hours hard graft to float away, forcing me to write it again. Thank any deity that happens to be near-by for the Auto-Save feature we've got here.
