Basically what are your views on the past generations of MLP animations? As for me I would say G1= Decently entertaining 80's cheese, especially the pilot. G2= MEH, It's Watchable, kind of like the Slice Of Life stuff, but a bit overly cheesy even more so then G1 at times, guilty pleasure I guess? G3= REALLY REALLY BAD. But enjoyable in a sado-masochistic, I wonder how crappy it can get kind of way, lol. G 3.5= Lazly flash animated baby ponies & Twinkle Star Adventure.... BURN IT BURN IT WITH FIRE!!! Seems me the series basically went continually downhill till Faust & co came & saved it giving us G4, which is basically like a second coming for the franchise, lol. So yeah thats my personal view on the past incarnations of the series, how about you guys?
G2 is PONY TALES http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOZLoWu4BHM Sadly it seems even Hasbro forgot about this show, it doesn't have a single DVD release, hmm, maybe if Shout Factory does well with the FIM DVDs we can get G1 & G2 DVD box sets.
3 and 3.5 came out direct to video, hence I had no itch to see them. Gen 1, on the other hand, I had a front seat for. I remember being babysat by a woman at the time who had a daughter. The deal was, I got to watch Transformers on the T.V. so long as we flipped right over and watched My Little Pony right after. I think at the time the two movies had come out but I never remember having a problem with watching them. Looking back on the property, as well as Transformers from the same age I see now that it was all the same vapid, toyetic nonsense. Even He-Man and Marshal Brave star, my two most favorite shows, end up looking flat compared with any one of the Disney Afternoon shows. Still, the character designs work out okay and everyone is clearly some kind of horse so I don't complain much on the technicalities. Gen2, however, sticks with me. I was in middle school at the time and was taking severe risk with my social standing by watching that material. Again it had the problem of being a little 2-Dimensional but it included boy ponies and tried really-really-really hard to be good at what it was. It just didn't have much to say, to be honest. It feels like, more than anything else, that it had the possibility to be great and then got bogged down in the corporate structure. After all, this is a property to sell toys to girls. What I remembered most was it's full frontal exposure to parodies of teen strife. The situations were over exposed and dealt with stuff like 'gossip' and 'relationships as ends to means' or 'exclusion by majority.' The kind of crap kids pull on one another just to fight off the pain of being teen and not knowing what's up or down. I forgive them all, except for the recent one. Then again, the property had to go through that to get to here...
Thanks for clearing that up for me Stereo. G1 was the first so I respect it as it is. G2 is quite decent. Nothing wrong there. G3 and 3.5 are just laughable.
I've only seen G3 and G3.5, so I have no respect for MLP before Lauren Faust. My sisters were obscessed with it, though.
I never watched the shows as a kid. Looking at them now, I'm not too impressed. This is probably because of 3 main reasons: 1) I'm comparing it to Friendship is Magic 2) I haven't really watched enough to get into it 3) The animation and voice acting isn't as good as many other cartoons I probably will never get into the older generations though. I'm trying to be open-minded but I don't see it happening.
Here is what I think based on limited watching or hearing about it. G1= It seems watchable. The animation isn't that bad. You really need to take in account that it's from the 80's so it isn't that bad. G2= Doesn't seem too bad. It's odd. However, them writing with their hoof is always so odd. G3= Voices are odd. Some characters it seems like have way older voices than they should. Animation is hard to look at, but I remember Kyrospawn posting a scene where either Rarity or Rainbow Dash faint and it was kind of funny. G3.5= WERE THEY EVEN TRYING?
No, no they were not. Also I can't get over how Rainbow Dash is basically Rarity in G3, I swear every time I hear RD say Darling, I just can't stop cringing, lol. But yeah, I do feel kind of bad for G3 & 3.5 , I mean It was like Hasbro had basically just given up on the franchise and was only still making it out of obligation to what was left of the existing fanbase, it just seems G3 had very little to later on NO heart & effort put into it. Thankfully though G4 has revived the franchise like the Pheonix rising from the ashes, and hopefully G4 will be around for a fairly long time, and any potential future generations will aspire to be as good.
g1 Animation was okay, the plot was okay, villians had an 80's aura about them wich was pretty cool, the characters were flat and just plain sucked. only intersting pony was firefly and she was only around at first, but it may just because I have a bias. I have a puppy named firefly that I adore. g2 MUCH DIFFERENT! characters were flat again just earth ponies blah. wasnt fond of the animation and it just reeked of the 90's. The plot wasnt great but it wasnt as corny as i thought. g3 ow my soul g3.5 no! just no.
My first introduction to the franchise was via MLP Tales. My babysitter's daughter LOVED it and I couldn't stand it. To this day, I can barely listen to the theme song without cringing.
G1 - I used to watch some of them on VHS when I was little. So it kinda clings to me, and gives out some nostalgic vibes. Overall, it's entertaining, animation was okay (considering it was back in the 80's and all). Some of the villains were pretty cool. The only main character I remember the most was Firefly, she was my favorite. G2 - Honestly I hardly watched My Little Pony Tales. But I do vaguely remember the theme song, and that's it. The series itself just seems easily forgettable, in my opinion. G3 - I remember seeing an episode when I was looking after my little sister. It was really difficult to watch and the voice acting for some of the characters were pretty annoying. G3.5 - Okay. No. Just no. They obviously were not trying at all, it was just straight up terrible and plain cringeworthy.
