So with the season coming to an end I figured it'd be interesting to see how opinions have changed over the course of the season. Though the poll is for favorites, feel free to rank them accordingly in your posts too
What a coincidence! I was actually just going to post this in the "Who's your favorite character?" thread just now, but I can post that here! As of the season finale, I actually like each character equally in one way or another. I have no favorite now!
In the beginning, I had no favorite character among the main ones. I pretty much preffered Luna because I could indentify with her a lot. I also linked my personality with pretty much how Twilight acts, but that was it. Now, I must say I still have no favorite among the main characters. I just liked them a lot more. A lot. Especially Rarity, who gained a lot points with me for being such an angry lady. Way. To. GO! Still, I picked Fluttershy out of cuteness. Or wildness. Or pink mane/hair. Whatever comes first.
Let's see - Comparison breakdown: Twilight: Beginning: the general impression is that she's severely anti-social, to the point of being unbelievable in the character, she's apparently incredibly powerful or something being star-student to the highest authority, but you never really see that until "boast busters" (though that's still fairly early). -impression: Not that interesting of a character, she's the main character but her sheltered personality is just a bit over the top, even for a cartoon, that it's hard to connect with. End: while she's still essentially helpless on many common tasks, her personality is shown as more believable as the anti-social factor seems a bit closer to something believable, aside from that it just seems like a prodigy with difficulty connecting on things that aren't what she's good at - she strikes on that easily devotes to causes or tasks that they believes but at the same time is very concerned for the feelings of those around her, almost overly concerned at occasion. -impression: definitely more interesting of a character, it's interesting how they bring into conflict her concern for the opinions of those around her with her capability to easily accomplish pretty much anything. Overall: + Fluttershy: Beginning: easily a favorite, her personality is fairly simple but leads to humorous circumstances when they juxtapose the her behavior (like quite vs. loud, shy vs. assertive, etc.). She seemed to be very important to many of the early episodes. -Impression: a very likable character End: odd, she seemed to lose importance/focus as the series went on. Of course the juxtaposition jokes can only last so long, but she just didn't seem to show up as much. The personality is likable as ever, but it's almost kinda startling to see her insanity at the end (while at the same time pretty funny). -Impression: not much of a difference in opinion, still a likable character she just doesn't seem to give you as many reasons to prefer her over the others Overall: - (relatively speaking, she doesn't move but the others surpass her) Applejack: Beginning: she likes apples, and stuffing food in other's faces. Aside from some pride issues she doesn't seem to have much going on -Impression: she's there, she's not that important but she's there (her sister even seems more likable) End: not much seems to change really, she still likes apples, and still likes stuffing food in other's faces. She's had swallow her pride (ironic as she's always forcing others to swallow) a few times but she still seems like relatively the least interesting character. -Impression: not much of a difference as before really Overall: 0 (she doesn't improve or worsen at all, and she was never considered that "high" to me that she's move) RD: Beginning: She seems to be about one thing: awesome - all else seems to come second, friends, trust, etc. etc, but you forgive her for that as she seems to always make it up in the end. Aside from that she's the one always accompanied by rock music and serves as a figure easier for a male to identify with seeing as Spike is mainly a punching bag (no gay jokes intended). -Impression: Well this picture sums it up well: End: her ego can only be forgivable for so long really, after a while it just seems to lose it's comedic punch. Other then that it doesn't really seem like they explored her character much, she had few inner challenges to confront really, it's pretty much always the "fly fast, look awesome" routine. -Impression: well she's still really likable, you just kinda wish she'd be shown in some more depth then just the pushy one that's overly competitive. Overall: - Rarity: Beginning: ahhhhh, the girly, it BURNS!!!! In the beginning it didn't really seem like she was there for much other then the compulsory "fashion and tea party" character since it's a show intended for little girls. -Impression: easily sat at the bottom of my list in the beginning End: not "girly," "exquisite" - they really put her OCD-like attention to minute detail to use for comedic effect and over time the fancy voice seemed to become less and less abrasive so to speak, no tea-parties yet so we're safe in that regard and the way she turned whinning into a weapon was just great. -Impression: definitely more likable - she seemed to get a lot of focus later in the series Overall: + Pinkie Pie: Beginning: she wasn't really shown much in depth, she just seemed to be the one to deliver random erratic or non-sequitor jokes from a veil of what appears to be insanity. Although she was always happy, she didn't seem to really feel much, other then an urge to break out into song about pretty much anything. Basically she was very flat personality-wise, she just seemed to do whatever she wanted for no exact reason without needing an explanation. -Impression: I'm supposed to have an opinion? Cupcakes! End: remember that whole "veil of insanity" thing? Well now it makes sense, you finally understand exactly to what level she's completely insane inside and see the signs of bipolar personality as she only seems capable of being insanely happy, or insanely insane at a time (with the obvious visual cue) - the thing is you now sort of understand how this came to pass and watch it both amused and disturbed. -Impression: still cupcakes! Overall: + (though her personality doesn't change much, understanding it just makes her a deeper character)
Even though I now like each of the mane six equally, Lately, I've been really taking a liking to Rarity a lot for some reason. I guess now that it's the end of the first season, I've now grown to really like her personality.
Derpy: Let's see your comparison breakdown. I loved it. Twilight: She indeed improved a lot during the course of this series, and seems by far, as expected, the most promising among the main characters. Not to mention that, tough dutiful and study-a-holic, she has a likeable personality from the beginning, was just not exactly outgoing. As she appears a lot (more like a watcher of the situations), however, she doesn't gain much spotlight. Pinkie Pie: I just tought she was a rather wacky character, probably a homeage to the golden age cartoons. While I didn't think of anything to think about her in the beginning, she pretty much turned rather creepy to me... Applejack: I guess the reason of why she didn't improve much is because she seems, by far, the most stable of the characters. She's plain, yet she's the easiest to work with. Also, I guess she's still likeable tough plain: tough not so appealing, she's far from being obnoxious. Rainbow Dash: She was cool in the beginning to me. In the beginning. And in the very end. Seeing her having an almost crush on the Wonderbolts and almost hiding from audience in the flying competition was much of a surprise to me. She gained a lot of points for despising Gilda and staying loyal for her equals, tough. Overall, she didn't exactly do much in the series. Just had her key moments, which makes her quite of a side character. Rarity: I pretty much liked her from the beginning, even tough too girly for my taste. In the very first chapter she sounded having a taste for luxury and glamour, yet she wasn't your typical snobbish brat. And knowing how generous she was (and still is) was worth a lot. She's one of the team's biggest bullseye in this show! :3 Her only nasty moment was when she dressed up for the flying competition, but it's more than clear that she learned her lesson. I guess it's unfair for people to dislike her so much just because she's girly. A girl doesn't have to be extremely cute or a tomboy to be good! CUDOS for this unicorn! Fluttershy: While she's just your cutest thing, she can be wild on the inside, like many shy (LoL?) people. She's pretty much a predictable character, as girly shows tend to have a sweet and undaring person among the main chars. Yet, you said it, she doesn't give much reason to be liked other than cuteness. I like her for being kind and having a funny personality to mess with, tough. And I guess the authors wanted all of them to have their own spotlight, hence why she lost some importance in the later episodes. Also, in Green isn't your color (it's mine! ;D), we had too much Fluttershy covering, so they had to cut some. While she's not really that filled, she's not unnoticeable either. But seeing her in a rage when getting delluded with the Gala was (almost) disturbing...
I must agree the whole fluttershy rage thing had me on edge, I'm not I would have taken it that far was I writing the script (but hey maybe that's exactly why I'm not!) Maybe a moping, crying, depressed fluttershy would have gone down better - don't get me wrong it was funny but I won't be able to help but think she's a mean old .... .. .. .. . . . every time I see her from now on XD
I liked Crazy Shy. It makes a lot of sense rather than her being a depressed mare. You know, it's always the quiet ones. They should have given her a gun while they were at it. Maybe an AK? :derpe: ANYWHO... They already did depressed with Pinky Pie. First she was depressed, then she cracked.
Pac: Nice point. Still, Fluttershy as a psycho was a lot scary, and disturbed me somehow. Nothing was scary as Pinkie cracking down, tough.
Still it brings up the point; who are they really aiming this at? Surely not little 4 year old girls lol?
Well the first season was completely written before they knew of the second audience, so first season yes little girls, second season is going to have more fan-service in it though
In the beginning: 1. Fluttershy 2. Rainbow Dash 3. Pinkie Pie (She probably would have been 1 or 2 based on the first episode though.) 4. Applejack 5. Rarity 6. Twilight Sparkle In the end: 1. Pinkie Pie 2. Rainbow Dash 3. Rarity 4. Applejack 5. Fluttershy 6. Twilight Sparkle
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHhh!!! FEEL THE PINK RUN THROUGH YOUR VEINS!!! Another Pinky lover. *Brohoof*
Yay! *brohoof* It feels really weird saying I like Pinkie Pie after suffering through the awful G3 version though.
