Something I've always thought... convenient for lack of a better word is how fitting the ponies names were. Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Big Macintosh... it got me thinking. Are ponies named immediately at birth or are they given a little time to see what their personality is like before naming them? I can imagine some are named quickly while others take a little time, but I thought it an interesting theory worth some discussion.
We have a thread like this somewhere. How the show names them, I have no clue. I assume pony magic. How I've named my OCs, talent or job first, then they get a name. Only one out of place is Platinum. She's a teacher. Makes no sense, but I like the name to much. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
This topic was starting to be discussed in another thread. But it probably deserves its own thread anyway. I have two theories. The most likely one is that the parents have some brainwave/psychic vision that tells them what to name them. The other is that there parents are incredibly strict and completely control the life of their child. The latter seems less likely.
I think when Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake (is that her name lol I can't remember?) were born, they were given their names because they had the surname "Cake" so it only seemed fitting. I personally think that each race of ponies has it's own kind of name style. So a unicorn will have a swank name like Rarity, or Twilight, or Blueblood, or Fancy pants because they're expected to grow up in Canterlot which is a shall we say, "posh", society. Pegasi names like Rainbow Dash match, because the pegasi's typical job is making rainbows, inb4 rainbow factory. Fluttershy has wings, and she must have been as Photo Finish would say, "GRASHEFUL", at birth, or showed some signs of delicacy, therefore relating her to a butterfly in some way. Earth pony names are pretty basic I guess; Big Macintosh is quite large, Pinkie Pie's pink, Applejack works with apples etc. The only one that stands out for me is Granny Smith, because lawd knows how the ponies would see her as a grandmother at first glance. Unless she was old at birth. But anyhorse, that's just my idealogy. Maybe the names are drawn together with the cutie marks by fate as we have no idea what powers could be at work in Equestria? It's a magical place, of magic, and magical things! :3
I read a theory somewhere that cutie marks appear the moment they're born, then dissapear. However, if that's just a way to name them at birth, i doubt nature would bother doing that. :derpe: After all, not EVERY name resembles cutie marks or personality. Twilight Sparkle seems to have been named after her appearance only. As for the Apple family, they just decide on Apple-something and go with it.
Applebloom had Twilight try magic to make it appear. She had 5 at least. What if the wrong cutiemark showed. If that was true couldn't parent tell children how to get their mark. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
I think we've already established that the purpose of a cutie mark is discovering it yourself. Parents be trollin' :Trollestia:
And as I said before, Applebloom had 5 or so appear on her when Twilight tried with magic. Either cutiemarks are multiple choice or they were all fake. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
If the parents do force their child to act in a certain way until they get there cutie mark, it would explain why the CMC haven't got their cutie marks yet: - Applebloom's parents don't live with her (I reckon that they're top secret government spies) - Sweetie Belle's parents spend all their time on vacations and never spend time with her - Scootaloo's an orphan
Most likely they were all fake. But the rest of AB's family fills the role of parents, so it doesn't make much difference. We don't know that. But the one time we did see them, they were expecting her to get a cutie mark for fancy cooking. :derpe: We don't know that either.
If this were to happen, I think that her siblings would like her to find her own talent. Although this theory is something I just made up. It's probably not true, considering this is a kid's show. I reckon that they just get lucky or they go to a fortune teller.
A simple fact is we can't PROVE anything until they decide to make an episode about it, which i doubt they will. They had the perfect chance to explain that during the baby cakes episode. And all we got from that episode is Earth Pony + Earth Pony ≠ Earth Ponies. Spoiler :Trollestia:
I see what you did there... Although I think that the Cakes' explanation did make sense. Maybe they were both carriers of Unicorn and Pegasi genes.
It makes just as much sense as saying my son is black because my great-great-grandfather's uncle on his mother's side was black. Genes just don't work that way. I guess it's time to pull out the answer to everything that doesn't make sense... Spoiler Anyway, back on topic now. I think pony names are MAINLY decided on what other ponies in their family were like. Naming Rainbow Dash must not've been so hard considering her mane color. We've already established that the Apple family has their tradition. Canterlot ponies can just be given a random glamour name and it'll fit somehow. Or maybe they're just randomly named and they decide on how to live their life based on how they were named. Like Shining Armor wanting to become a royal guard.
Families sometimes share similar names: Apples- take a guess... Twilight's family- Shining, Sparkle - Light related Looks count: Pinkie- look at her and say she is in no way near a shade of pink RD- Rainbow-colored mane and tail Fluttershy- flutter... she is a pegasus Twilight Sparkle- color of late sunset Granny Smith- Looks like a granny, even as a child Predicted Attitude/Future: Rarity- loves gems and other RARE objects Fluttershy- shy Shining Armor- armor is worn by guards Society matters: Unicorn- Posh name Pegasus- Average name Earth Pony- so original... (pinkie cuz she's pink) Lineage? Misnames? Anyways, there's a few ways. Or maybe, they live according to their names.
I think that Shining Armor was called that because he was Princess Cadence's knight in shining armor. Although it is ironic because it was Shining Armor that needed saving, not the princess.
That and his special talent is casting protective spells and he is a royal knight. His name works on 3 or 4 levels. Wait a minute....This isn't General Discussion! *Runs away*
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. But still, how did his parents know that he would become captain of the royal guards? They named him before he even started to do magic. I still think that the parents must either get extremely lucky or they have some sort of psychic influence. That and a few other factors probably decide the name for a pony.
