To 90% of our members: Not THAT kind of plothole!

    -------

It can be found in this video:

To those who didn't find it:

"It's Princess Celestia's most faithful student! she saved the world twice and is the sister of our captain! RAISE YOUR WEAPONS!!"

    Seriously, what the hoof? :sigh:

    Also:

"A threat has been made against Canterlot."

Why the hell would Chrysalis threaten Canterlot, only so they'd put up a defense and force her to make a difficult and risky plan, instead of... you know, just walking in there and kidnapping Cadence?

    Tee hee hee, plothole::S:

Anyway, I think that the royal guards don't know who she is because they haven't seen her. They were probably on guard duty when the celebrations took place. That's all I can come up with.

Oh no, why did you have to point out multiple meanings to the word plothole.....my mind needs a scrubbin'.

Well, she did appear overly aggressive when she walked up to building. I suppose it was just a gut reflex by the guards. You can never be too careful when a threat has already been placed against Canterlot.

A threat has been placed against Canterlot, and yet no one listens when Twilight keeps saying Cadence is evil. You'd think that 1000 year old Alicorn wisdom would kick in. :derpe:

For the first part, I'd say that probably most of the royal guards have probably not seen Twilight (either ever or in a long time), or probably weren't as quick to recognize her.

For the second, looking at Chrysalis's personality, she seems completely full of herself and incredibly cocky. Not surprising if she was all like "Muahaha I'm going to attack you guys," then ultimately ends up failing in the end. She's the classic overzealous "reveal the master plan" villain (I forget the term ugh). Yay: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilGloating or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deathtrap_(plot_device)

And as for them not listening to Twilight for the 500th time, you got me there.

Now you have a point. Unless the guards that investigated fake Cadence were replaced by changelings.

I applaud your passion for probing plotholes, but in this case I think you might be stretching just a little too much.

First off, most of those guards probably haven't even seen Twilight before, so their immediate reaction was to treat her as a threat. Perhaps nerves could have played a role in the suddenness of their reaction as well?

Moreover, are we even sure that Chrysalis made the threat? I highly doubt she and Discord are the only enemies of the monarchy out there. If some other established race made the threat, Chrysalis might have exploited expectations and taken advantage of the confusion.

If Chrysalis was the one who had made the threat, she could have done so strategically. While the guards are very alert to outside dangers, I can imagine ponies inside the force-field would feel an increased sense of security. Moreover, it would divert the attention of the guards and monarchy away from the behavior of the 'secure' ponies, thus allowing faux-Cadence to not raise many alarm bells.

Or, given her rather theatrical bent, she could have done it as a way of showing off. The only thing better than taking over Canterlot is warning them beforehand and still managing to get away with it.

    Nerves? Yes.
    Not knowing Twilight? No.

    Remember It's about Time

Guard: Hey, Twilight! Haven't seen you in a while!

She broke into a guarded area at night. That's the reaction. She shouts and walks towards Shining while in clear sight and she gets a completely different reaction. It makes no sense other than nerves.

Chrysalis is clever. By threatening Equestria while in Canterlot, she got on the inside while weakening one of the largest assets the Princesses had. Also, she probably told Cadence her entire plan, and look what that got her.

Do we know if those were even the same guards? The ones who reacted immediately could have been the ones who weren't stationed in areas where Twilight would have gone.

Yeah but those were Canterlot LIBRARY guards. Of course they'd know Twilight. And as for needing to sneak in. Perhaps being at the Canterlot Library after dark is forbidden, so maybe the guard let her in because he knew her. But now this is off topic, and a completely different situation.

Where did she grow up? The palace.
Where were the guards at? The palace, or at least the general vicinity.
Where was she headed? The palace, or a least the general vicinity.

I would want to guard a library, after all Knowledge is power.

It's about time: When Twilight "sneaks" into the Canterlot archives, a guard greets here.

All this could have been avoided if they would just live in igloos.

Those were the library guards. Of course they'll know Twilight. Other guards may not recognise her.

    A lot of assumptions here.

Canterlot is a fairly big place. Do you automatically recognize everyone you ever went to school with? Probably not. These guards have probably met a lot of people, so the fact that they didn't immediately recognize Twilight is not surprising. ESPECIALLY if they're on edge after being told of a potential threat from outside. Also, Twilight spent the vast majority of her time in Canterlot studying, so it's not like the guards stationed around Canterlot would have seen her very much, as opposed to the guards assigned to patrol the area around the royal library.

Moreover, we're assuming the same number of guards have been around since Twilight left. Given an elevated security risk, however, it would make sense to increase the number of guards protecting Canterlot. So perhaps these guards have truly never seen Twilight before because they're relatively new to their jobs.

There are a lot of plausible reasons the guards wouldn't have automatically pegged her as someone safe and reacted defensively.

I don't se how that would make a difference. I'm sure the guards have more interesting things to discuss than "let me describe who I saw today". The Royal Guards must be a large group of them. Like PonyExplosion said, there were probably new guards because of the extra security. It didn't help that Twilight was looking pretty angry as well.

    Logical post is logical.

Also, so far the only post I noticed that mentioned the possibility that those guards were new.

Anyway, the fact that the guards did not recognize her is not really a plot hole. A minor mistake maybe, but I really don't see that affecting the plot in any way.
