    In all seriousness i think the reason most ponies and colts dislikee it is because it had a great premise (spikes heritage) but never really followed trhough on it, instead going off into a meaningless tangent of frat boy hazing, cluminating in spike becoming a hypocrite by taking the egg with peewee in it

    I view it different. Spike doesn't know who he is or where he came from. Becomes determined to find out. Hangs out with dragons and doesn't fit in with them.

    After finding the egg and being told to smash he didn't have a choice. The jerk dragons would have smashed killing the bird inside. Spike saving the egg is just like him hatching. He could have be killed before when he was an egg.

    I think people missed the point of the episode just like in Over a barrel or whatever the episode was Derpy showed up in.
