I got a tiny issue i need some help with.

You know how a computer goes in stand-by mode if you let it alone long enough? Normally moving your mouse or pressing a button makes it start up again. For me that doesn't work. No matter what i try, it stays on Stand-by mode.

My first solution to it was changing the settings so it wouldn't go in stand-by mode at all, but it still does that.

For now, i'm continually trying to keep my computer from going into stand-by, or turning it off entirely when i'm gone for a longer period of time. In the case my computer goes into stand-by and i can't get rid of it, i'm practically forced to turn my computer off without using the proper procedure and just pressing the power button, which i heard is never good.

This first started happening yesterday after reinstalling Windows. I got a virus i couldn't get rid of, and i panic easily. So i wiped the entire software clean of everything i had. (yes, i'm aware that was stupid, but effective)

    So, anyone got an idea?

Im a computer nerd.Check your windows directory.I would recommend scanning the sensitive parts of the OS with you antivirus.

You probably bucked up when re installing windows. Alternatively. You could simply disable sleep mode. The PC will never go into standby.

It should but the re install could have been partially corrupted.Sometimes virus's never go away if they have had time to get a foothold. The only way to get rid of some is to get a new PC.

Right now i'm doing a full system scan, but i've already done that yesterday and it found nothing.

    OS = Operating system.(Windows,Mac,Linux etc..)

    Windows directory is C:\windows

DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING THERE!YOU COULD KILL THE PC!

Yeah, i knew that much. :p

Like i said, i already changed those settings, and i just checked them again, they're unchanged. My computer shouldn't be going into stand-by at all, but it still does.

    Crap... -_-

Anyway. I'll be checking this thread until tommorow. If there's no other solution by then, i'll probably be going out to buy a new one.

This one is getting old anyway.

The Hard drive will be cheaper to replace.

What did the virus do exactly?

Did you do a complete drive wipe or just a format? Because wiping it cleans it of absolutely EVERYTHING and formatting it only looks like it get's rid of everything, but the files can still be restored. You might have formatted it and that could have given the virus a chance to restore its self somehow.

But otherwise Sparky has given some good advice. Your pc is most likely stuffing around because that virus managed to survive the format

You normally shouldn't use the standard drive wiper, there is software that does the job better than the standard wiper

Also, make sure that the virus wasn't on a Flash drive. because if you stuck the flash drive back in, then you let the Virus back on your PC

I never use flash drives. i don't even have any :p

Besides, i've practically made up my mind. I don't really mind taking the expensive solution. It's the easiest one, and I have plenty of money saved up anyway.

    Alright, listen carefully.
In the motherboard (large rectangular panel with tonnes of stuff on it) there will be about four thin slots, inside there will be any number of "chips". I want you to check these chips to see if any of them melted. If any of them did, you will need new ones to replace the melted ones only.

Before you go, does your computer smell funny?

I don't smell anything out of the ordinary. Anyway, the full system scan i started a while ago detected 2 virusses so far, so i know it's likely not a hardware issue.

Like Sparky said, i'll be needing a new PC. That's obviously not a cheap solution, but it's by far the safest one. As for the "Just replace the harddrive". Yes that would work too, but my computer is roughly 6 years old now. If i just buy a new one, i'll be getting alot more than just a new hard-drive. And i can be 100% certain that everything is gone. :p

EDIT: This thread can be locked now. Thanks everyone.

Well, just wondering, which anti-virus do you use? I prefer to use Microsoft Security Essentials because it makes sense to use something that Microsoft made for a Windows PC since they should know their own OS.

But like Sparky said, you may need to buy a new PC...though my PC(I'm on my laptop right now) is about 5 years old and replacing a hard drive is pretty simple, just gotta open the case and unplug the old hard drive and put in the new hard drive; Depending on the hard drive capacity, brand, and if its solid state or not, the price will vary but I see them on newegg.com at 250GB for 80$.

If your uncomfortable messing with the inside of your PC, you'd probably be better off just going to the store and just buying a new one; Will probably be better in the long run to just buy a new one to be honest (looking at getting a new PC myself once I get the cash but custom building mine).

Have you tried quarantining it with an antivirus program? If that doesn't work, what they said, get a new hard drive, you might lose some stuff, but I just got a new one for my laptop and it feels great.
