    So basically, every game is pretty much a different story that may or may not contain characters from the previous?
    And that the series it self is pretty much the only thing kept Square alive?

    Not really. Each game takes place in a completely different world with no character crossovers. Square's doing quite well for itself now, so FF isn't really keeping it afloat. It is, however, one of its biggest money makers. Another huge money maker for them is Dragon Quest, a game series so loved by Japan it's illegal to release it on any day that's not a holiday or the weekend. Because people will skip school and work to play it.
