If a character is given the life of another character of the opposite gender, should

1. Alter gender - Something weird to help with posts but doesn't damage lives too badly.

2. Don't alter gender - Easier to write but is more damaging.

Life's Lemons

A lone and powerful sorcerer sits upon a mountain top, with little but his studies into magic and his telescope to occupy his twilight years. He spends his time exploring magic as a whole, attempting to understand where it comes from and the limits of it's abilities. He attempts to explore the ravines of the mana and plot the rapids within the seemingly endless supply of journals he keeps. His lair is nothing but a library. A place from where he can observe the world through the glass, watching the activity below with all the interest of an ant farm.

The story here gets choppy as retelling of the same tale tends to do. Some say that he lived long enough so observe an entire generation of ponies in the village below pass on, baffled by how their presence was swept away by all but their families and closest friends. Others tell of attacks on the village from a large range of hostile creatures, even snails if your not looking to take things seriously. Where the tales begin to over lap again was when the Sorcerer refused to believe that they could leave such a temporary and fragile mark on this world. Those that remember that pony would surely vanish as well, with time.

It seemed cruel that there wasn't something else that recorded such an existence as a life.

So, The Sorcerer searches through his notes and experiments with the intention of finding anyway way that life might be recorded by nature and magic. He found nothing.

He was disheartened and now beginning to feel his own strength ebb away. If there was no mechanism for recording such a thing as a life, then he would create it.

The Sorcerer puts his remaining years into the research and completion of a titanic library. The mountain top currently has been removed, placed instead in the only place where the telescope could see everything: outside of everything, including time. The complicated, ocular device feeds its data into books that are constantly writing themselves as they sit on the shelves, scratching away to engrave another lifetime within the pages. Strange, clockwork librarians roam the still active halls to fetch and carry books to where they are intended to be. The Library of Life hasn't ended it's ceaseless recording for generations. If you live in Equestria, you have every action, thought, dream, desire and spoken word recorded in third-person narrative.

Now, what could you possibly do with such uinformation?

Apparently, you appoint yourself judge of the entirety of life.

Having this information just sitting around, you would also ready it wouldn't you? Surely, you would! All that documented prose that links exactly to the real life thoughts, hopes, dreams and knowledge and actions of every single pony down on the land. You'd start reading these biographies, unedited and complete in every detail.

The Sorcerer flicks through these books, becoming more and more engrossed with these lives. He is uplifted with these lives: children born, charitable works, spreading happiness.

Then there's those that, in his opinion, wastes their lives. A rich pony loafing around, a criminal sneaking out of bedrooms clutching jewels, an old miser shouting at a mother for getting in his way. That infuriated the Sorcerer. Cut off from the world, he couldn't intervene. He had no power. He had no way of helping these ponies.

Lastly, there were those that had been dealt a bad hand by life. The poor, the homeless. The bullied, the sick and the lame. People that have struggled on despite their handicap. Their plight touches him deeply but he also was cut off from any means of aid. He couldn't help them either, except to make sure they were never lost to time.

This drove him nuts to think that he knew of all this injustice and misery in the world, but couldn't do anything about it. He couldn't alter these fates or interfere with these events. All he could do was document and watch these lives fizzle out.

And he did. For all of twelve days of coming to the conclusion that this little venture into preservation had started to take it's toll on him, mentally.

He stared work on a new machine and a new direction for his machines. He would judge the whole of life using these self-writing volumes, judging those that he deemed worthy of a new machine.

The machine had two huge cylinders of hundreds of tiny writing heads on small mechanical arms all hung out the bottom like a metal squid. These two devices hang from the machine over two pedestals like sleeves. The bulk of the machine has a large grill, like a gaping mouth that holds a hellish glow that spills out onto the floor. Large gears mesh and whir behind the brushed bronze panels. It stands towards the ceiling, with a seat for the Judge to address the accused.

The machine replaces the life of one individual with that of another by rewriting the books of each of the accused. The Sorcerer looked to replacing the lives of those he deemed unworthy of their lives with those whom he felt had been given an unfair life.

He managed two of these swaps before he passed away in his sleep. The library carried on, recording and adding to it's volumes.

And now, it's going to be used on you if you're not careful...

To join, please fill in the bellow information:

Name:
(Include kicknames.)

Age:

Race:
(Pony, Griffin, Fox, Tiger, Minator, Estate Agent, ect...)

Appearance:
(Please include Cutie Mark with physical description, if applicable.)

Personality:

Powers, Special Skills and Abilities:
(Fill in as much as needed. Give pleanty of detail where needed.)

Biography:
(Due to the nature of this RP, it is vital that as much detail about your character is given. No detail is too small as it might drastically alter that same life when lived by another character.)

Extra Details:
(Anything that doesn't fit above but needs to be added.)

There seems to be a problem with the poll and I don't know how to fix it. For the mean time, the question was this:

If a character is given the life of another character of the opposite gender, should the gender of the character be altered to match or left alone?

If you do alter gender, then things get very odd as the character now has a life far, far more drastically different to what he or she had before. This gives pleanty to write about but might make things awkward. Maybe.

If you don't bother, then the changes to history are larger but it is easier to get into the writing as it's likely easier to understand. However, these changes are larger. If a male replaces a female character, then children could vanish as well as marrages or boyfriends. The opposite could be true for the reverse as children could spring up along with one of that characters mate's as the father. And that's just the tip of the iceburg.

Eitherway, your character will keep their personality but will likely have physical changes as well as historical ones depending on who is switched with who.

Any questions?

Unfortunately when she was only a few years old her mother died of illness, her father met the same fate not long after. Her guardian was an old unicorn who used her for things like chores and such. She was a cruel old mare who punished her whenever she got out of line with her. One faithful day Mollie had had enough and tried to escape, she almost made it too but was captured. This made the old mare so angry with her that she put a curse on her and turned her into a doll. she said if she was good from now on she might break the spell. The old mare died in her sleep a year later. So now Mollie was unable to break the curse and stayed in the old mares run down house, unable to face the outside world how she was.

Huh...Wow.

I really do hope this turns into a competition to see who can offload the most bizarre back story onto a helpless victim.

Biography: Rifter was born in the Griffin Kingdoms and joined the guard at a very young age. He built up his muscles a lot, by smacking other Griffins hard enough in the head and training. He was many times offered a higher position in the Griffin army, but each time declined saying it is more work and less booze. Those who know him know him as kind and compasionate if you find him at the right times. Those who dont, would not understand him. He often travels around Equestria and other places, saying "If lands were not meant to be travelled, they would not be connected."

I'd be glad to try this. Looks like a good, mentally complex Rp. (@Tyro have you ever played D&D?)

Name: Walter Cawley
Race: Pegasus
Age: Colt
Appearance: Imagine some old majordome named Walter, wearing a doctor's clothes. Turn it in a pony, and you've got it~
Personnality: A calm, straight pony, wich as only one desire: please his master. As a servant, he is polite, gentle, and somehow emotionless. He just bends in the background, and adapt to his master, while giving his best to please the one who had hired him.
Biography: Born in Canterlot from servants in the royal familly, the first thing he learned was to stay silent, blend in the background, and please the house's masters. Educated to be a servant since his young filly age, the only thin he knew was to please others, and staying silent, almost invisible, until someone called him. He lived poorly until he could get enough money to get some proper education in cloudsdale, where he finally learned to fly, and to open himself to others. He was shy at first, of course, but he quickly learned to adapt to the social class of the pegasi, just like he could adapt to anything in life.
He had good results at the cloudsdale's school, letting him the opportunity to study at Canterlot's univrsity. He studied a lot, to become a neurologist at some hospital, and acquiring experience for a few years. He finally found his cutie mark, the symbol of mind (http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs51/i/2009/312/e/1/FMA_symbol_by_adrift_in_mind.jpg), when he had to help a patient who had a mental breakout. He found that his goal in life was to help insane ponies to become mentally sane again. The royal familly gave him subventions to help him in his researches, and builded an Asylum for him. Walter became Dr. Cawley (Shutter island) and engaged several ponies, qualified, to be part of his medicinal crew of doctors. But a few years later, constantly in presence of insane ponies, turned him mad. He found that no one was really an 100% sane mentally, and found how to boost his brain's capacities, to finally implant his madness in other ponie's minds.
(I know that it may seem totally abusive, but if you read Shutter island, you've gotta admit that it would be a nice twist to Cawley's character~)

Wait, so are we gonna have our ponies switched with another character doing the RP? My OC sounds absolutely perfect for this.

Name: Cyanside
Age: Unknown (supposedly 15)
Race: Pegasus
Appearance:
(It's sorta hard to see in the picture, but her cutie mark is the black half of the yin-yang symbol)
Personality: Carefree, outgoing, and playful. Often trying to help out other ponies.
Biography: Has a split personality. When Cyanside changes personalities (Her other personality calls herself Shadow) her coat darkens to an almost-grey black, and her mane becomes purple with light blue streaks (As opposed to its regular light blue with purple streaks). Shadow is overly protective of Cyanside and the two of them see each other like sisters. They can communicate with each other directly in their mind. To other ponies, Shadow is often cold, emotionless, and often passive-aggressive. Shadow also likes fire.

Cyanside cannot remember any of her foalhood, for what she can remember, she has always been an orphan, with Shadow as her only friend until recently. Never went to school, and has never been able to keep a job for more than a week. Is feared for reasons unknown to her in Fillydelphia.

Hope thats good enough.

Now onto a question. If somepony swaps with me, does that mean that both Cyanside and Shadow will end up being a part of this new pony. Or does it mean that Shadow will stay in the old position and Cyanside will be on their own. And as an extension of that, if Shadow and Cyanside are seperated, since they are still technically the same pony, would that mean that Shadow would remember Cyanside and therefore be hostile to the new pony? Cause if that is the case then I both feel sorry for whomever gets swapped with me, and am also going to love seeing how it pans out.

Sadly Saul, I've never read Shutter Island. I have played D & D but not properly in anyway shape or form. My RPing has stayed firmly with forums, so far.

Eitherway, its a certainly interesting character. He sounds like a villian and it's going to be difficult to group these character's together. Hmmm...

Eitherway, your in.

Cabera, I'm so glad you share my sadistic tendencies towards characters. It would probably be far more interesting to have Shadow stay put. Partly because she would have to deal with the new pony that's invaded but also because you'll have Cyanside's reaction to having an entire head to herself.

The reason Shadow would know that there's a new personality present is the same reason character's will know that something is wrong. When lives are swapped there is an area of no effect around the machine like the eye of a storm. If your standing around the machine, you'll have no alterations in your memory, including the victims of the machine. Meanwhile, everything else will drastically warp around the group as an entirely new universe.

Make sense? Now I just need a method of getting you guys to the machine...Hmmm....

Considering that I know I can get lots of Drama out of the idea of putting the right character in the 'wrong' life. Your character would aggrovate very, very nicely.

So, I ought to start introducing my own characters...I'll go with the two most important to start with.

So, our Villian:

Name: Princess Cydonia

Age: A closely guarded secret.

Race: Alicorn

Appearence: Her mane sits on the side of her face like a scythe. A large, black curve that keeps its sharp shape. Her amber eyes can show you an ocean of avarice and her brilliant white coat shines along with the metal chestplate she wears.

The chestplate has a constant click as cogs and gears grinding away bellow a shining silver surface. Along it's edges, parts whir and move, showing where it clicks into larger machines.

Her tail is sleak like her mane; ebony and curved like razor blades. Her mark is three gears meshed together in a circle.

Personality: Cydonia is duplicitous, impatient and cunning enough to make sure that what she wants comes a whole lot quicker.

However, your more likely to see the sweet, innocent caring Cydonia if your not an obstical in anyway.

Powers, Special Skills and Abilities:

Some Magical Skill: Cydonia can cast spells and fight competently but it would not be her first choice when looking to defend herself or perform complex tasks.

Biogaphy: Cydonia comes from the far off land of Autonima. Founded by Earth Ponies, it's risen as a mecca for inventors. Steam is created with magic to power huge machines which operate bridges, vehicles, cranes, ect.

Cydonia is the youngest of five siblings and has been put in charge of the capital's guards. After growing increasingly irritated with the fact that she was likely to wait years to get onto the throne in her own kingdom, she began to plot ways of rising to the top through her siblings.

Unfortunately, there was no viable way of gaining that throne without loosing the claim she currently had. Her Father wouldn't hear of it. So she sort to find another. Equestria seemed like a good target, especially after the reinstatement of Princess Luna despite her past.

She planned against them both, planning to use propoganda to slander Luna and sow mistrust. As for Celestia, she would use a trap and a fall guy: some wash-up named Tyro.

Her plan failed. Tyro managed to turn the odds against her and foil her plans. She went to great lengths to hide such horrible acts from her father, plotting to snag the throne of them again.

Extra Details: She's likely to pull cannons out from where she can.

Eyes: Light Purple
Cutie Mark: Mosaic Eye

Personality: Generally reculsive. Will speak if adressed, or if he feels he has something relevant he needs to add. Very serious.

Powers, Special Skills and Abilities: Exceptional at magic.

Biography: Lunar Island is a small island off the southwestern coast of Equestria. After Night Mare Moon was banished to the moon, the unicorns Lunar Island cut themselves completely off from the entirity of Equestria. Even when Luna returned a thousand years later, they stayed out of the land's affairs. Most ponies nowadays don't even know the island exists. On the island, everypony must pull their own in casting spells to keep the island hidden. These spells are of a very powerful nature, and the only way for them to achieve such a feat is to suppress their emotions into an even bigger ball of magic. The barrier of suppression is known as the Fye, which could cause mental or even physical harm to the pony if ever broken. Kleft had a fairly normal life in Lunar Pony standards. Of course, this means many of his emotions are repressed and are only shown to a small extent. He's very excelled at the Fye, and has much magical talant.

Extra Details: Give him a cookie. Kleft loves cookies.

Heh, heh, heh. Perfect. Welcome aboard.

- - - Double Post Auto Merge - - -

And the IC is up. I think I got the reasoning correct but if its wrong, please correct me and I'll alter it.

IC: Link

Plus, here's Tyro.

Name: Tyro

Race: Kitsune

Powers, Abilities and Skills:

Energy Manipulation: Tyro has a complex system of abilities that allows him to absorb energy then repurpose it in a number of different ways, such as creating fire.

Some idea of how to throw a punch: Tyro can fight hand to hand. He's not brilliant but he'll give you a bloody nose at least.

Biography: Tyro's life spans over a decade and has become extremely complex as it's gone on and on.

He arrived and started making trouble when Princess Cydonia made her move on the throne. The plan to pin attempted regicide on Tyro started to fail when he fought and escaped from Princess Celestia. While her trust in the fox doesn't seem to have recovered, Princess Luna asked to keep him as a personal agent for her as a reward for stopping Cydonia from slandering her name. Celestia exiled him to within Equestria's boaders to make sure he doesn't cause any larger issues.

Later adventures would reveal him to be the Ancient Element of Luck but that appears to be something of a destraction from Tyro's usual pass-time.

While others fish or paint, Tyro catches criminals. Luna and Sulphealious, a baby dragon that feels more like Tyro's babysitter, feed him a long line of targets for him to find.

The rest has either been kept secret or Sulphy hasn't managed to get the information out if him yet. The occational mention of 'The Black Fox Empire' hints at what Tyro was doing long before he was first spotted in Equestria. Snippets of stories suggest that somewhere, he's got a wife and kids but he appears more interested in catching the next bad guy rather than answering Sulphy's questions.

Appearance: A dirty scarlet fox with two white tipped tails. Two triangular, black ears stick out of a shaggy mop of hair that seems able to blind him. He also has a white fur that runs from his belly to his chest with a scruffy tuft. The black socks of fur run from his paws to just past the joint.

Personality: Tyro is knowledgable about monsters and magic as well as stuff he's long forgotten but eccentric and clumsy. While light-hearted, he is quite sacastic and will make fun of increasingly weird situations in his frustration. Above all, Tyro tries to be both level headed and calm in all situations. Also, Tyro seems incapable of leaving a mystery or something interesting alone till theres nothing left for him to do.

Extra Information: Abilities come with lengthy explanations.

Name: Karl, The 44th Clockmaker.

Age: around 24 or something.

Race: Clockmaker (Yes, Clockmakers are a race made of one single creature)

Powers, Abilities and Skills:

Pyrotechnic Powers: Karl has a broken horn, rendering him unable to use magic, but of it's mended, he gains Pyrotechnic abilities that go over the regular flame. Example: The Black Flame. It cannot create a light and corrupts the user when activated, but can completely heal it's user from a death status, in exchange for total corruption.

Exceptional Strength: Karl is exceptionally strong for his appearance, and when enraged can lift a pillar with both his hooves, and throw it. He normally becomes very tired after that.

Biography: Unbeknownst to Karl, he was actually hand-made by The 43rd Clockmaker, patched together from some of the worst villains, with the dark red coat overdrawn to create a new personality. However, Clocky locked that memory away to prevent Karl from being scarred for life. Now he's grown up and is trying to find that memory, that he has begun calling "The Truth" and killing anypony along the way. He has been "killed" numerous times, but has always come back from another location. To counteract Karls independent behaviour, Clocky has put a curse on him that prevents him from living without killing a pony per week. If Karl doesn't kill a pony in week, he begins to get struck by, what he calls, "Pain Waves". This was found to be energy spikes, as when his horn was mended, his body counteracted by dispersing this energy as fire. This becomes lethal to Karl as his body isn't built to output that much energy, and causes him to acquire two-to-three degree burns.

Appearance: [IMG]
God i hope that worked. Anyways, his cutie mark is an ornate clock with an axe over layered on it.

Personality: Karl will often play around alot and stop caring about his objective, but he'll do it sooner or later. When he becomes enraged, his eyes shrink down to the size of a dot. He will only try to kill, or destroy, the one who made him enraged, and obliterate anything that stands in his way while enraged. There are multiple ways to calm him down, but the most efficient way is to let him go and just lay back and enjoy the carnage.

Extra Information: Is prone to reference things outside of the MLP universe.

Oh yeah, something that I should probably have verified about Shadow which would have explained why Cyanside said to toss some fire to her. Shadow has a very...unique, way of fighting. She sets parts of herself on fire (Generally her hooves or wings) And then uses that fire to set her opponents on flames, before putting it out. My reasoning for why she can do this is that due to her body having lots of contact with fire due to this method of fighting and other reasons, her body has developed an unusually high level of fire resistance, to the point where she can last about a minute before it starts to actually damage her.

Also, no drunken pony anymore Jhera? I am for dissapoint in you.

Interesting fighting style.
Rifter is usually just "Its still breathing, slash it with my claws."
