This will be for anyone, but mainly Americans. Do you think the United States of America should continue as we are doing, acting as almost the world's military, or should we be more concentrated at home and let events take their course? Please remain respectful and within the rules whist discussing this topic. Ok go!
We should ONLY fight when us or our allies are threatened. Now can we stop being the international police? Most countries dont even want us there.
I agree, but I will provide a counter-argument. America virtually foots the bill of most of our allies or close friends military. Think Japan, we ARE the Japanese military in essence. And there are many countries that are able to spend more on their populace because of American military bases on their land.
I'm not an American, but I think that if the US spent less money on it's military trying to get involved in every single war - which is noble I admit, but not very wise in the long term - then it can go towards thing like the health care in the country, possibly even able to make it free for a lot of people, and also projects like NASA. The statistics of the US military are sometimes shocking. For example, NASA has a budget of I don't know, something like 1 billion a week (don't take my word for that I'm not entirely sure but it's the same principle). The military often spends more than that a day. It's a cause which should often be respected, especially when people are putting their lives at risk and saving innocents from their own governments, but if an army stays in a country for too long, they become dependent. I'm not sure what the current situation is in the countries they're fighting in, in the Middle East, but I personally think there's too much fire power over there at the moment.
That's because we don't need our military at home. The only true reason we have bases in America is for training and as hold over till their next deployment. And the reason we don't need military is because we have two of our closest allies to either side of us, and if any nation tried to send an invasion force strong enough to conquer America, we will already be fighting them at their own home.
And when we don't have our military at home what does that do? It creats a relaxed inviorment to the point that we don't see what's coming till it happens, 9\11 being one said event. We had inteligence pointing at a possible attack on the United States via hijackers from a CIA Drone in Afganastan (pardon any spelling mistakes) and we did not act on it at all. The type of war has changed since the Vietnam conflict we no longer must fear the country that can strike with the biggest army, but the one that can strike with the smallest.
Scratch out the country part and you've got truth. Think, the last true country on country declared war was Iraq. Nowadays, it ain't about countries attacking other countries, it's about small groups attacking within a nation to get what it wants.
I'm a huge war buff. The US is invincible to an invasion as it stands right now. No country is is stupid enough to transport an invasion force across an ocean that we monitor around the clock every day. Even if you can, you will be waking the sleeping tiger, not unlike Japan in 1941. I do think we should assist our allies (Great Britain, Japan, Israel, and our other neighbors in the Western Hemisphere), but that is as far as it needs to go. We need to bring the boys home from the nightmare in Afghanistan and Iraq for sure. We aren't wanted in the Middle East. Essentially, we are stretching our welcome. There is only one last thing we need to do in that region- Take away Ahmadinejad's toys. They're defintely packing some heat somewhere. Our first hint should have been Israel getting antsy about Iran's so-called "nuclear power program"... A-jad is nuts. He's worse than that kid ruling N. Korea IMO. North Korea, militarily, is joke. When they have the money to launch a rocket more distance than the ocean right next to them (yes, I know, that was just a little sarcasm), I will take them seriously. TL;DR War will be fought with buttons from now on, so we might as well back off and secure the future of our allies and ourselves while we still can.
America spends more on it's military then any other country. They also spend more then the other 14 countries below them combined. I'm not expert, but this doesn't sound like a good use of money. America should stop being the world police. Other countries can handle themselves. Plus I don't believe America does it to be helpful, they want that oil.
_Ram_ as soon as we think our selves invincible something like 9\11 come out of no where and slaps us in the face, in fact 9\11 is a repeat of history. You want to know why we are hated across the globe? Because we stick our noses where we don't belong.
Last time I checked Europe does not have very rich deposits of oil. Also, that is 600 billion almost 700 billion dollars we are talking about, which the GOP doesn't want a single bit cut from, even from the growth.
Both. America should be involved in world politics. Look at the mess the U.N. made in Darfur because they took way too long to commit to military action in the area. Lives might have been saved. Civilian lives. There are bad things happening around the world that America, as well as other countries, should care about. And we should care enough to do something. "With great power comes great responsibility." ~ Uncle Ben, "The Amazing Spiderman" Still, we can also do other good things with the billions and billions of dollars that we sink into our military. We could do great things for our communities. We could make neighborhoods safer. We could make our environment cleaner, and commit to preserving it. After all, what are we fighting for? We need to walk the razor's edge. We need to be cautious yet watchful: hopeful yet vigilant.
This is a subject that I don't really see eye to eye with. I think the US should be isolationist Pre-WW2 style. Too many people have lost their lives fighting a useless war. What has the war on terror done? What has the war on drugs done? Both are the same answer. And it's an obvious one, too.
Took Saddam Hussien out of power in Iraq, virtually crushed the Taliban and Al-Quada (In Afganistan). And for the drug war part, kept a lot of drugs away from Americans and put a lot of people behind bars that a lot of times needed rehab, not jail.
Are drugs really that bad that we need to have a war on them. Make all of them legal, let people do as they wish. It would make crap so much simpler, not to mention the money the government could make off it. All this from the straight edge guy. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
And..that effects the grand scheme of the universe how? Some cause physical damage. Some can cause violent outbreaks. ONLY make the ones with little negative effects legal.
