Wonder if they ever thought that maybe the communists would just, I don't know, LIE. It's not hard to lie.

Not the reason. "Under God" was added to differentiate the US from 'state atheism', or the promotion of atheism by the government, which the Soviet Union and other Communist nations practiced at the time. Since all students were required to state the pledge, it was also assumed that it would help keep their minds clear of communist thoughts. The more you know.

However, I personally feel that line should be removed. The fact of the US being so culturally diverse alone should be enough to warrant the change.

Also, I'd like it if they didn't require someone to attend Alcoholics Anonymous for something like a DUI or failed drug test, since the 12-step program is very clearly religious in nature. What would happen if I had to go, being agnostic-leaning-atheist?

Aye, but it is. Many non-Christians will argue that it is insulting to assume that God and Christianity in general is seen as the highest religion since it is incorporated into one of our nation's important expression of loyalty. In the eyes of non-Christians, it could create the image that their religion is moot in comparison. Atheists will argue that they shouldn't need to be forced to recite a line in which they do not believe.

IIRC there were a few cases where students that practiced atheism, or another religion were suspended or even expelled for refusing to say 'under God'.

Maybe because not everyone in the US is a Christian. What about other religions? Forcing them to say under god is hurting them. It's not what they believe. I highly doubt that I'll ever have to say the pledge again, but I won't if under god remains in it. *is a badass now*

I got taken out of assembly at my high school for not bowing my head and closing my eyes during the school prayer. This was a public secular school by the way.
I was given a detention. I just smiled at the bible-thrusting lunatic of a teacher that was lecturing me.

Geez...Because ya know, falsely bowing your head is any better...Seriously now. That's pretty ridiculous, especially being a public secular school as you said. I don't mean insult, and I respect the views of religion, but ugh, I can't really support a public institution that forces a religious act, even if something simple.

The thing is that I wasn't really doing it out of rebellion or anything. It was early morning, meaning I didn't get much sleep, so I was staring into space not noticing what was going around me.

WELL.....This is why Christianity has such a bad name...

I can understand them wanting to pray, almost all schools do that, but I don't believe people should be forced, Over here you, it's almost the other way around, you'd be teased for being a Christian by some people here, not persecuted for having no religion.

I'm sorry that happened to you Xaniith.

Also I'll be posting a lot more today, because Flu and nothing else to do...

I always find some of the rhetoric so amusing when someone speaks out against wanting God in something, always reminds me of this pie chart...
