As stated above, I am curious about these OC ponies. I've known they existed for quite some time, and I've toyed around with the Pony Creator on devianArt. Specifically, should I create one? If so, why? Are there any general guidelines regarding the use Cutie Marks? And what about names? Those always give me trouble. I do apologize if this is located in the incorrect category.

    Sincerely,

Rules? For OC's? And you're being serious? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Sorry: look, they are called Oringinal Charaters for a reason, how ever they look is completely and entirely up to you, there are no guidelines or anything.

I suppose it was foolish of me to inquire about rules regarding OC's. :sigh: Originality is in the name, after all. I take it personal expression is the key?

    Pretty much, yeah.
As for why you should create one. It's not about why, it's about why not. :derpe:
I have an OC i just made for fun. I never effectively used him for anything other than a signature/avatar set i had long ago. However, if you want an actual use for your OC other than random artworks, i suggest writing fanfiction or roleplaying.

now this is just me but

    Avoid Neon colors
    Avoid over saturated colors
    don't use a Black coat.
    don't use Rainbows
Don't relate them to any pony from the show
Don't ship them with any pony from the show
Don't add horns, demon wings or any of the other pony creator crap
    Don't make a recolor.

    that's all I got.

No no no.Some of those are fine.

Dont make an Alicorn UNLESS you write them properly.

More proof that the writers screwed up with Shinning Armor. *Trollface*

But seriously, I'd say that you shouldn't make them overly powerfull or make them into an Alicorn {Unless your making a parody of bad OC's, which you don't seem to be doing}. And like Echoax said, having them be related to any of the canon ponys or shipping them with any canon ponys is a bit of a "No" thing. Not for this site, but it tends to be rather mary-sueish when it happens with someone's OC.

Many thanks for the suggestions. I wouldn't use an OC for anything more than an avatar or possibly RP.

Make an OC on how you want.
I made an entire blog series (I still need to finish the first chapter off) Which is about how I develop my OC's, their background, etc.
Just let your imagination go wild, but make sure you dont go too crazy and do the mistake of making something which looks horrible.
In other words: Take your favourite colours, shades, ideas, traits, race, etc.

I can think of one rule.

DO NOT use the colour scheme: black and red.

    1. Never use illuminous colours
    2. Never have jet black mane/coat
    3. Don't make it an alicorn
    4. If you're having things such as a broken horn don't then add 5 other special features.

^ and that is how you avoid making a douchey OC.

    Hmm....Guidelines, guidelines...

    - Try to keep to about two or three colours across the entire character at the most. If your character looks like a patchwork quilt, you might be going overboard.

    - Less tends to be more. Heaping everything onto the character just because it's there in the Pony Creator might give the impression of having fallen through a jewellery box backwards.

    - Consideration of intended Personality of the character is a good thought too. Laid back or unhinged characters will generally look more dishevelled than an uptight neat freak. This is probably more a consideration if you ask anyone to draw your character. I don't think a simple tool like Pony Creator will help with that.

    - Mythology's always handy for taking ideas from. Sometimes using a good deal of that idea can inform everything else.

I got nothing else...These are suggestions. No need to take it as gospel.

Cutiemark represents a desire to uphold balance and justice.

These two represents what I was when and before I become a brony and what I am now after a year of ponies.

Darkmoon on the night of the grand galloping gala(Rarity's design).

I quite like this design. Clichee or not.

The backstory involves a being from another realm arriving in Equestria, this being calls himself Darkmoon, Prince of Earthrealm, a totally fake title, but the ponies don't know that. Darkmoon's pony form is the result of a magic spell performed by a circle of unicorns, he is neither a natural alicorn nor originally a pony.

Hint, Lyra was highly intrested in Darkmoon's original form.

    ^This (PS Can't find a good gif. :( )

Most of my rules are already said, sooo... Err...
Well, make sure not to give your OC too powerful skills, try not to give it too bland skills. Gets irritating on Roleplays and such, trust meh.
Also, Alicorns are usually considered no no's, as ya can see.
