I just wish I could choose between pegasus and unicorn, I just can't, they are both too awesome. That is the reason I do run an alicorn, please forgive me. But yeah, we cannot have too many alicorns for obvious reasons.
Echoax is mostly correct with his examples. though I do sort of agree with Sparky as well. Here are my guidelines and a bit of explanation. >Colors Use whatever colors you want to because let's face it, everyone's aesthetic likings are going to be different. If you choose to use neon colors, then go for it. If you choose to oversaturate your colors, then feel free. However, I'd recommend staying away from a pitch black coat, not because it looks bad but because of all things it usually negatively implies things about the creator's originality; just about every badly made OC is a pitch black alicorn with a red mane. However, this doesn't mean you can't use darker shades of black either, such as charcoal. Moderation is key. >Alicorns and other bodily add-ons While I and many other generally dislike the weird additions such as horns, demons wings, or just being an Alicorn, it's usually because of a simple reason: the creator puts it in 'just because'. If you can get a good backstory revolving your OC that explains why he or she would have these add-ons or their connection to being an Alicorn, most people generally wouldn't mind. And when I say good backstory, I don't mean 'hurr durr, I are Luna and Celestia's long lost brother'. No. Stay away. Don't do it man. Don't. Aesthetically, that's all I can say on the matter. Oh and for god's sake don't relate them to canon-characters. That's a quick way to ruin a good character. Sincerely, an over obsessive RP'er
*Looks to OC Dark Light* WELL SCREW YOU TO! (Shhh, don't listen to them Darky, they're just big meanies.)
Hey guys...how do you like my new avatar that I just spent a little more than half an hour on going pixel to pixel making it look like my Dark Light...*Twitch*
Exactly what I'd say. Also, don't give them a backstory like, "I'm related to the two princesses and I control the element of fire because I was involved in this war where I was so powerful I wiped out everyone on the field, then I married Rarity because I'm best friends with Twilight Sparkle who showed me how to use magic even though I'm a pegasus." Imagine having to keep that up through an RP, as well as the fact you'd be ridiculously over-powered, even RPing and OCs should have their limits. Colour saturation is key, so don't make a pony with a blue coat and an orange mane or something, it needs to be in the same kind of colour wheel or something that will blend with it really, or give them a good reasoning as to why it's so multi-coloured. Pony creator is a good tool to get the gist of what you want your OC to look like, but don't use it for everything. I've seen tumblr ask blogs with pony creator OCs, and god were they terribly lazy. On some occasions, people don't even try to make the pony creator OC look neat or anything, they just copy and paste the picture into their profile or wherever. And remember, what you start off with is an idea, you build your OC up from there. Mine used to look a bit like a male Applejack, and looked quite young, but now he's more like Shining Armour, because I turned him into a full stallion rather than a colt. I've used this to my advantage in RPing by saying he grew up to look like this eventually. Not to mention I constantly changed my mane style, body shape, features (like the scar and bite marks on his chest and flanks), and even wing style to find something I'm now happy with. You can change it however you like, it's your creation. Make it look fabulous darling.
Many thanks everyone (or everypony?) for all of the advice. It's been very helpful. Though I cannot decide on species, I have a color scheme (Off-Red body, with Yellow-y Blonde Mane and Blue Eyes). But enough about me. Thanks again for all the helpful discussion!
Behold the best OC ever, based off all previous advice!! :Trollestia: :Trollestia: :Trollestia: :Trollestia:
Mine's better. Bloodshed Butterfly This pony does have an intresting history, it is actually a ponyfied version of the vampire Eli in the swedish horror novel Let the Right One In. Vampire filly, quite horrifying if you ask me.
1) Ponies are pastel. They are not pitch black even if they are black- Take Chrysalis for example. She's black, but she's moreso charcoal. I've only seen a handful of OCs that 'work' with bright colours, one of these being my best friend's OC SkyLust. The trick is moderation. I'd also try to avoid manes/tails of popular characters, i.e: a rainbowdash mane or a twilight sparkle tail. Again, I've only seen it 'work' a few times. Put this code into general zoi's pony creator to see my best friend's OC: 311H00001079DAEDFFC49D00401FE1C1CUN1837000000000H1CC333303010233107F3FCC004CB2 I would have been more inclined to do this, but whatever xP : 311H00001079DAEDFFC49D00201394E84UN1837000000000H1CC33330301022T00CC2F2F004CB2 2) Your pony is not an overlord. Don't make them too powerful. Fit them into the mlp universe rather than fitting the mlp universe around them. 3) Personality counts. Don't just focus on colour scheme and general design. An MBTI chart is useful here as if summarises the 16 personality types. Maybe you can take the quiz yourself and then from your OC's perspective. Where are you different? Where are you the same? http://www.personalitypathways.com/type_inventory.html 4) Your OC does not have to be a unicorn or a pegasus- Earth ponies can be OCs too! Take the personality into consideration when choosing a species. Unicorns tend to be more sophisticated than others, and pegasi are described as being "a mighty band of warriors" (hearths warming eve). Earth ponies are 'down to earth', you could say, and have talents relating to their environment. They are usually associated with food. Make sure you choose your OC's talent along the lines of this- Unicorns are not good bakers just as pegasi are not good at growing crops. Anyway. Hopefully I helped. ^^;
This. All of my this. If you choose an Alicorn, you'll probably be expected to have a very regal character to compensate for it. But likewise with personality, any references you have in your character could account for their species as well, an example being just about most of my OCs. They're named after the four greek winds, and as a result they're pegasai, because it'd be silly to use that reference and have them be an Earth Pony or something, especially when it's a motif.
Thanks for backing that Zeph. ^^ Could you possibly show me your pegasus OCs? You've intrigued me now... xD I wanna seeee!
If you look at my OC names, they usually describe some attribute of their's, such as Snow is so named because of her white coat, or Winter Warmth because of his skills with fire and ice magic.
Hrrmmm.... 'Winter Warmth'... That's a good name. I likes it. ^^ My current ponysona (current, meaning subject to change) is named Jadesong. Jade, being my middle name, and 'song' since I am a musician.
Sv: Any Advice Regarding OC Ponies? *Clears throat* Right, this is probably gonna weird. But all i wanna say is: Karl. That is all.
Thanks to everyone who posted! I've received lots of useful information regarding the subject. This grew much larger than I thought it would. Does this happen often?
