In the spirit of all the talking about helping each other out that's been going on lately, I'd like to start a thread for sharing music that gets us through the lesser pleasant times in our lives.
I think we all have music that cheers us up a bit when we're feeling sad. Post your favorite songs, and tell us why they are important to you. Don't just post loads of them, but one at a time, and tell what they mean to you.

And I'll start. :derpe:

''Innocent World" by Freedom Call
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXZkvHpgobI
This is a song I listen to when I'm just fed up with the way people deal with each other. How we built this society on masks and lies and greed, and no one really gets to be theirselves. "No time for grace, no time for charity. I have to function like a cold machine."

The Chorus, "I wake up crying in the dead of night, I feel as helpless as a lonely child." just sends shivers down my spine...

I recommend it to anyone who has some interest in cheery power-metal.
(Don't worry, no grunts! ^^)

I was going through an extremely rough time when I first heard this. I was boderline suicidal and was struggling to find reasons to get up in the morning. I was on the internet, trying to find funny videos, when I came across one that used music from a band called DVAR, an anonymous duo from Russia who make rather strange, childlike music, as well as hardcore gothic and strange electronica. I became interested, to find that they were shrouded by rumours such as 'listening to them makes you die' and 'they speak in a strange angelic language' and what not. A load of rubbish, but I checked them out anyway.

I came across this song, 'Airim', from the album 'Madegirah'. I had never heard anything like this, it was so sweet and playful, yet beautiful at the same time. Now, I'm a huge DVAR fan, and have nearly all their songs. I don't like picking favourite songs, but Airim will always be special to me because of how I felt when I first heard it.

What else? "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" - never fails. And there's Tim Curry too! ^^

I know that many people don't like him, but Dan Black's "Symphonies" is quite personal for me. It's helped me get through a ton of rough spots. In fact, I can relate my...incident here to the lyrics quite well:

" The lights of a car go by in a stream
Seems like I stand pretty much unseen
But I open my eyes and beams
Come out

Gimme, gimme, symphonies
Gimme more than the life I see
Score rise up
Angels play
Let my loneliness get blown away

Gimme, gimme, symphonies
Gimme more than the life I see"

That really hit me....I want to find to find life's "symphonies"....I think this community qualifies as one, if that makes any sense:

It kind of depends for me. If I'm just looking for something peaceful and soothing, I try some Enigma, or just some Buddhist chanting. There's something about this song that always gets my spirits up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k-hU_YPL7o

Although I don't like the video for it . . .

And although it's a little sad, I still like

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKnVaDwUg5s

Or anything by Yoko Kanno, really.

@FrankT - They kind of mixed their movies, didn't they? That's OK, I love it!

Eheh, I forgot to mention; the song was arranged specifically for Spamalot ^^ They wouldn't do one for The Life of Brian until 2009.

When I need to calm down I usually listen to some Iron and Wine
It's very soothing and I often forget I'm even listening to it until the next song starts, because it's either provoked a strong train of thought, or I've completely been spacing out. Basically, it's great for moments when you just need to slow down and take a breath from the stress of life.

Sometimes I find I need to take time to actually feel the negative emotions, rather than push them away. So when I'm upset I often listen to Lydia.

If you're like me and like to listen to sadder songs when you're sad, just keep in mind that it's good to listen to a few, but afterwards move on to some more upbeat songs, that way you express the negative emotions, but don't get trapped in them.

This is what I listen to when I am down. It might not work for everyone, but I tend to re-examine what is wrong or what he problem is, and I find that I work best with this sort of music playing.

I find the album very easy to relate to. It is a VERY dark and disturbed album that might not be the best thing for someone already down, but it works for me. It has a ton to do about self blame and being forced into a cold, lonely, misanthropic world. At the end of the album though, all of this is absolved in one song, "Outside the Wall", which to me is a reminder that no matter how ugly things get, there is always someone who loves you.

This piece is a nicer song than the above. It is still sad, but it has a nostalgic and slightly hopeful sound to it. This song has pure emotional power to those who are open to it.

If that doesn't do it, I crack out some Coldplay. It's calm, peaceful, and generally beautiful. My favorite album is Parachutes, which, in my opinion, is best at breaking a bad mood.
