I logged on to Everypony Chat today to find that i was banned.... i have not done anything wrong and i wish to know why this has happened. If the administrator who banned me can answer this then i will be happy.
Also, when i log on to EP chat it says i was IP banned, so i may be able to log on with my other PC. It seems this ban is only for Chat, not for any other part of EP Forums.
    Thanks, Thrackerzod. (Destroyer of worlds)

Your IP is the same as another user, Commet: http://www.everypony.com/forums/member.php?4036-Commet --- Who was banned for foul language in the chat.

I'm going to assume that you share the same PC as this person. Our chat bans by IP address, so once his ban expires, the computer will be re-allowed access to the chat.

I apologize for this inconvenience. The ban is set for 3 days.

Couldn't you ban by account? I thought VBulletin was more versatile.

Ban by IP is much more effective. No problems with making more accounts to get back on.

I'd like to request that you ban Commet via account. I can assure you that I can make him not make another account. You don't have to, but since this effectively bans 5 people it would be a good idea.

The EPN Chat isn't actually a part of Vbulletin. On the forums, we can choose to ban the IP or not. On EPN chat, we have no choice in the matter.

On EPN chat, when someone is banned, it bans both the IP adress and the account. So people who didn't get personally banned from the chat can use another computer to log back on, while the user who actually got banned wouldn't be able to do that because his account was also banned.

In other words, if we ban someone from the EPN chat, it will always ban the IP as well. I'm sorry to say there's nothing we can do about that.

The chat is open sourced, and not directly integrated into vBulletin, therefore vBulletin's "versatility" has no meaning here.

The chat is coded to record your IP upon banning. I will not change this.

Anyway, this thread has served its purpose. If you have anymore questions, feel free to contact me.

The reason i was banned is that the computers me, Commet, Little Storm Cloud, SkittersImmortal and mrs. lovette use have the same IP when connected to our school Internet. I request that you account ban Commet from the forums, as any posts he makes there would likely be worse than the comments on EP chat.

Probably, yes. We know what Commet is like. Love yes, tolerance no.

If it comes to that, the forum mods will deal with it then.

Therefore little stands in the way of you making necessary adjustments.
Apart from the necessary time and effort of course.

IPs are a very loose way of banning.
Many people can simply reset their modem to get a new one.

Valid argument. Maybe you should change you banning method. Make it so you can ban in the same way so you can on the forums.

I agree with grey, IP banning only works on some users as some users IP regularly changes, and some users will change their IP themselves. Account banning is a more efficient way, as if they create another account and continue we can simply ban that account as well. I assume you cannot create more than 1 account in a small space of time.

Ah, but limiting account creation would require
Use of IP or some other feature of tracking.

    The best solution I found was banning in multiple ways;
By account, IP, email and cookie. (From most to least effective).

The chat bans by both IP and vB User ID.

Just to clarify as I can see people not understanding it:

    vB User ID = Account

e.g. http://www.everypony.com/forums/member.php?214-Flash is the link to my profile. The "214" you see in there is the vB User ID. So if user ID "214" gets banned, that'd be me.

    Yep.
I mean, sure you can just clear your cookies but...

It's priceless that no matter how much you proxy,
Until you actually get rid of the cookie, you're gonna be banned.

We need to test this theory.
    Quickly, someone ban user 214.
