Category 1. Also, there was more than one death. I've heard of at least two, but there may be more now. One person was killed when a tree fell on their vehicle and a child was killed when a tree fell on their house. It's awful. Now there's a tornado watch that includes the entire Jersey shore as well as Long Island. By the way, despite it being a "little hurricane," (by "little" I mean the intensity of the winds at the center, not size, it's actually quite massive even for a hurricane), DO NOT TAKE IT LIGHTLY. I'm still seeing some jokes being poked at it from my NJ friends. Although, some are now finally getting the idea since the tornado watch, some tornado warnings, and now the winds are finally starting to pick up. There's even some flooding already occurring. It seems like it has to take some damage for it to finally get through some thick skulls that this is a serious situation. Oh, I just heard that there was a death in NJ. Someone drowned, but I don't know of the details on it. Now that makes at least three. *Sigh* Why don't people listen?! These can be prevented, people! Sorry, it just aggravates me when people don't take these storms seriously. They can kill. This one already has and unfortunately, it'll probably take some more lives before it's over. I hope I'm wrong, but that's just an unfortunate reality that comes with these things. Just to let you know, despite what it may look like, it isn't getting to me. I just hate the fact that someone's life is ended abruptly just because they didn't take it seriously. Don't just pay attention to the category. There is much more to a storm than that. That just means the winds are between 74 and 95 MPH at the center. It has nothing to do with storm surge, tornadoes, rainfall, flooding, etc. The wind field of this storm is huge, and the rain shield is enormous. From what I understand the last hurricane to hit NJ was sometime in the 70's, at least that's what a family member of mine told me. That could be why some weren't taking it seriously. Another reason is probably because they were only listening to what category it is. That's a very dangerous and potentially fatal mistake. By the way, thank you for the video again, Zephyr! It looks peaceful now. Anyway, as for the EPR chat, I haven't been in there in a long time. I hope that person is okay. That's crazy.
Yeah, it was my first hurricane. There was no torrential downpour or anything, just lots of wind. I shudder to think of what would happen if we were directly in it's path...
It happens in Florida as well. Although my family/relatives.. we never really evacuate, we are all prepared to last the hurricane until it is over. Hurricanes aren't supposed to be taken lightly, they are dangerous and are deadly. Back in the years before Katrina even hit like 1-2 hurricanes before Katrina in that same year, a enormous tree fell and was so large it blocked the whole road in our neighborhood and I think damaged the house across the street. Anyways I hope everyone is OK from the damages of the Hurricane and any other natural disaster they may occur. You don't want to know...especially here in Florida. When exactly are you going to visit Florida? Because you're eventually going to experience a lot more Hurricanes over here than up north. (Haven't remembered the last hurricane to hit Florida besides Irene this month.) I miss experiencing Hurricanes...
I'm sorry, it's absolutely terrible anybody lost their life, but there's something about the death of a child that completely breaks me. It's a child, there was so much to live for, so much to do, so much to experience. From a logical point of few, it was one of at least three deaths, but from a deeper level, the fact that it was a child makes it so much worse. I of course mean no offence to those also affected by the hurricane, they have my concerned thoughts too, it's just that one bit really gets me sad. Just the concept that they will never grow up. Ever.
I usually just stop by Orlando for a couple of days for vacation. I was going to go in October for a Halloween event, but with college taking more money than I thought...it's not likely. Hopefully I'll be able to visit one day...
@Luprony; I agree with you entirely. That child didn't deserve that. Now his/her life has been expunged, and for what? Because their parents chose not to evacuate. It's a real shame. @DRD; Well, at least you guys are better prepared to handle it. New Jersey isn't. So for NJ a hurricane is a really big deal, despite the stupidity I'm seeing on Facebook. I'm not saying it isn't a big deal for you. It absolutely is, no doubt about it. My aunt used to live in Florida and she rode out Hurricane Andrew back in 1992. As for some NJ residents, instead of taking it seriously, I received an invitation from someone inviting me to a hurricane party. I thought, "Are you freakin' serious?!" I wanted to say something to that person, but being the nice guy that I am (well, I hope I'm a nice guy, you can be the judge of that), I just ignored it. I figured I'll just pick and choose my battles, and that one is definitely not worth it. I'm also seeing things like "How do I prepare for a hurricane? I bake cookies." and other junk like that. Then again, maybe this goes back to the situation in the earthquake thread that I made about me not understanding the sense of humor. Maybe they're using humor as a way to mitigate the gravity of the situation. Or they're just in denial. I don't know. I'm not going to argue with anyone. Most of them are taking it seriously, so I'll keep them informed. It's really all I can do at this point. Also, a tornado warning was issued for my parents' home. I called them to let them know. Then I called them back after the warning expired. They're okay. Thank goodness.
Thank god their okay. Anyways, who the hay does a Hurricane Party...(I would understand if it was after they evacuated...but wow... )
God, I'd rather be in Florida right now to get away from school. We could all rave together Anyway, I jus saw an update on the news. There's supposed to be a tornado during the hurricane tomorrow right where I'm staying. Yikes
I doubt even Pinkie would want to have one....well, maybe an after-hurricane party... anyway, I'm glad your parents are ok ePONYmous! EDIT: you better be okay Affection!!
It's like you said to me, Zephyr. Don't worry about me. Now, the tornado will make things complicated, but I'll be fine.
Considering it's Pinkie Pie, she would want a Party either-way. (Maybe in a safe spot hopefully...) Come to Florida and join me and Zephyr (Whenever he comes too.) Then we will party somewhere. :derpe:
And I'm 18, figure out someway to get to Florida. Teleport or something. :derpe: We could always try Disneyland or something. I'll just need $$$ to save up.
I wish I could party forever. That would be amazing. If Vinyl Scratch was the DJ too, I would be in heaven.
Maybe if Vinyl Scratch was real or an actual DJ that was named Vinyl Scratch or DJ Pon-3 and looked like her. I would be happy. :derpe:
Yeah, we could hit a theme park...I hear there are some good clubs on the Universal Citywalk, that could be cool. Why am I talking as if this is really gonna happen....I'm too optimistic.
That would make me very happy. I would pester her about being one of the people in her posse (spelled that wrong, didn't I?). Maybe I can move to Florida one day. I don't know. @Zephyr Only Celestia knows if this will happen. I wish it did, though. If it does, I'm still going to a club and dancing. Might not drink, but I'll down coca cola like nobody's buisness
Sorry, Affection, but I'm going to be concerned about your well-being whether you like it or not. You are also under a tornado watch between now and 5:00 AM EDT. So make sure you keep an eye on any local news or weather media in case a warning is issued for your area. As for my parents, right now it's just heavy rain with light wind, but I'm being told the winds are starting to pick up now, which is what I expected. They have a house that I'm sure can handle the wind, but what I'm concerned most about is the isolated tornado threat and the falling tree threat. They have a lot of trees in their backyard, and with all this rain saturating the ground in conjunction with the trees being full of leaves, when these strong winds hit, that could present a dangerous situation. Also, I was just informed that the family member I thought evacuated from the shore decided not to. He thinks that it's not going to be as bad as the meteorologists are saying. I can't say I'm surprised. He's a stubborn one. My parents offered their home as shelter to him if he wants. He hasn't decided to accept that offer yet, but I hope he does at some point, even if it's overnight. I sure hope the storm surge isn't that bad. He lives right by the water. Also, another family member of mine decided to stay, but she lives in a mobile home. That worries me because I'm pretty sure they're not designed to handle hurricane force winds. If that wasn't bad enough, some people that evacuated the shore, decided to return! What fools! Don't they understand that the storm isn't even there yet?! (Obviously not). Man, some people are really dumb. I'm hoping it isn't as bad as the forecast is predicting. See, with things like this it's a double-edged sword. If the forecast is wrong, then these people will be okay, but then that ruins the credibility. Now, you may ask, "Isn't their well-being more important than credibility"? Yes, in the short-term, it is, but what if another big storm hits? No one will evacuate because the forecast isn't credible, which can result in a greater loss of life. It really is quite the problem. As for Pinkie Pie, I can totally see her looking at a weather map of a hurricane and saying, "You know what this calls for? A PARTY!" Despite the seriousness of this situation, that actually makes me giggle. Oh, Pinkie Pie... You a silly pony. Well, on a different note, a part of me wishes I was in the storm. Not where I live or where anyone I know lives, but like what the meteorologists on TV are doing. It looks like fun. I'm seeing some familiar TWC faces like Jim Cantore, Adam Berg and Jeff Morrow weathering the storm. Lucky guys.
