No problem. I think a lot of Americans ignore their basic definitions in favor of the phony connotations that those words have been given.

I'm not sure how the discussion of Affirmative Action and its negative aspects spiraled into a discussion of politics...

I wholly agree that Affirmative Action can be completely useless and weaken an organization because they were compelled to hire an unqualified person as opposed to one who is more prepared or qualified simply because of their race/religion/sex/orientation/whatever. I understand desiring some kind of an ethnic balance, but what good does that do you if the person you hired is unqualified and negatively impacting the position? I firmly believe that that someone should be hired entirely on their work aspects (usually accompanied with a portfolio or resume demonstrating their technical skill and knowledge, which falls under use of psychology and perhaps investigating.

I'm assuming all of this is for a job that would require some focused learning, and not just working a cash register at an entry level McJob.

Once again, you do not have to agree with my opinions. I'm not forcing you to believe in them and make you feel like an idiot like you seem to pride yourself in doing to others so rashly.
I can't help what I believe. I'm very open to discuss other opinions without getting offended by them and having a tantrum like a spoilt five year old.

It's not like I just throw my toys out of the pram without any substance. The whole 'debate' atmosphere here is very unwelcome considering that there are a lot of people too enclosed to acknoweledge other perceptions. I don't care if people aren't likeminded, but a little bit of consideration and tolerance wouldn't go a miss. Especially because I never mean to offend/upset anyone.

    Thanks anyway.

It may just be because I live in the North US, in a small town where everyone gets along, and have been terribly sheltered. But my personal opinion is that the same thing happens in the US, albiet less explicitly and to a lesser extent.

Whites discriminated against blacks in the US since there were westerners settled here. I am nost certainly not racist, nor am I under any sort of disillusionment that this did not happen. However, it seems that occasionally, an African American will pull the "racist" card and win because no one wants to look discriminatory. Which is absolutely ridiculous.

"You're just saying I'm wrong/I can't do that/I can't have that because you're racist!" would be several examples. I've seen it, even where I live. It's stupid.

I am not saying that racial discrimination does not exist in the US against African Americans, because it does. But there are definitely certain cases of them using the general population's anti-racist sentiment to their advantage.

It's not really the same thing, since it's not the government, but society. But still. It's kinda similar.

(And yeah, I know about Apartheid. Watched horrible videos on it. Looks every bit as bad as our Segregation. Which is to say, awful.)

A lot of people don't realise that racism is treating one race superior or inferior to another. Everyone should just forget about races, for we are all one race really: the human race.

    Seriously, this.

I can honestly say that I don't take race into account at all when I meet someone. Whether they are acting like a stereotype of their race is their choice, but I base my judgement off actions. Physical appearance in general, not just race, matters very little to me.

Of course, that's not to say that I don't subconsciously make assumptions about how people think and act based on how they look, even though I know it's wrong. But as soon as I get to know the person, those assuptions are either deemed inaccurate and dispelled, or confirmed when the person lives up to my estimate of their personality. I'll be honest, the first one happens more often.

But I certainly wouldn't take it into account when deciding on eligibility for college. That is absolutely ridiculous.

The purpose of affirmative action is to ensure that equality is upheld, while at the same time it also contradicts it.
Unless it's implemented everywhere and not just in the places where absolutely needed, I don't feel all too worried about it. However, if it's a nation-wide thing, you're damn right I'm going to be upset about this.

How about the countless programs in place that are only applicable to people who aren't white?

In my senior year in high school we had a lady come in and give a long speech about a program set on helping young people get a college education. She topped it off with a "Oh, and you can only apply if you're African-American or Hispanic."

Reverse-racism is rampant in the States.

Businesses are required by law to have a certain amount of each race employed at their businesses. It's a set ratio. The typical ratio is 20% of each 'natural' race.

    20% White, 20% Black, 20% Hispanic, 20% Asian, 20% Native.

They can't go past 5% on either of those.
    It's stupid.

The government is stupid, except when it's not.

I think that covers about everything. ::S:

Actually the ratio varies based on the ethnic distribution of the area.
For example, my town is 60% Hispanic, 10% Black, 10% Asian, and 10% White, so those are the ratios it goes by.

Oh. Well here it's under the 'Forced Equality' standard. No matter what the ethnic standard is, you have to maintain a balanced population in your business.

The government's idea of equality is to find the lowest denominator and then just beat down everybody else's rights until everything's leveled out.

Unfortunately, a lot of people agree with it.
