Signed it. Who came up with the stupid idea to make shoes out of kangaroo leather in the first place?

It's cheap, and leather shoes are actually good for you, while synthetic shoes require extra foot care.

Not going to sign, since there's nowhere near enough facts there. Because, you know, kangaroo farms don't ONLY produce leather. They also produce meat, for example. Normally, I would be fine with this, but you're asking Nike to basically kill and industry. And industry in a country that ALREADY has massive economic problems due to a lack of jobs. Sure, you're saving kangaroos, but you're also hurting people.

And, y'know, I think people are more important. Not to mention that kangaroo farms do not contribute to the extinction of the species.

If you think this is bad, wait until you see the genetically engineered Stingrays that are killed for shoes.

There's a lot that I don't agree with. Atleast this is a start.

In reality, I find the while animal saving thing silly.

inb4 we get actual oxygenerians, because some vegans start to think that hurting plants is bad.

I have an intense love for all creatures, which is why I don't like seeing them be killed for things we don't need.

I mean, I'm fine with them being killed for food, and then keeping the leather as well, but I think they should be killed humanely and painlessly, and the babies should be given proper care.

I actually agree with Dan on this subject for the most part. There is no "humane" way to kill an animal. People will always complain regardless of how it's done. If people eat them to survive and use the skin to protect themselves, then I think it's fine. Just because I think this way doesn't mean I love seeing animals suffer. If you do really have a deep compassion with all creatures, just be careful not to let your love for animals be outweighed by your hate for humans.

I'm fine with humans using animals for food, shelter and other essentials (especially if they are raised by humans). However, using animals for fancy football boots is just silly (in my opinion). I can't imagine that the benefits of using kangaroo leather is that much greater than using alternatives.

Although the petition site is (obviously) biased, it's hard to tell how these kangaroos are being farmed. If they want it to be cost effective, I don't see them treating the kangaroos too well.

Also, this discussion may become more serious. Perhaps it should be moved?

So because it's a cow that makes it okay to use it for leather?

No. I'm actually a vegetarian, so I'm not too keen on the whole "raising livestock to kill them" thing. However, some could see raising cattle as moral, since you are raising them and providing food, shelter and care for them (well, you're supposed to).

EDIT: DAMNIT MIGGY, YOU WASTED MY 3000TH POST!

My opinion is if you eat this animal it would be a waste to not also use its fur. And kangaroos are used for food. Human food and dog food. And kangaroos are not near extinction. For me is just important that they are treated good until they die. I mean i also eat pig. I dont eat meat for example by which i dont know where it comes from. Yes its hard to get and expensive but i feel better with it. So if the kangaroos are already slain because of their meat... well why dont use the rest of it for leather.
And im sorry if this thread was not meant for discussion =) Just wanted to leave my two cents...

I can understand perfectly where all of you guys are coming from, Yes I can understand if the leather becomes a by-product of the meat of animals, but I've done a little research and according to that it says Leather is a Co- product, meaning that animals are deliberately being killed for their leather, when there are cheaper synthetics out there. Basically I'm not opposing the leather industry, I just want the animals to be treated humanely. Most of the pigs, cows, sheep, whatever animals are treated horribly, only to die horribly too.

TL;DR For me, they must be treated humanely and kindly, and by humane death I mean a Quick painless death.

Also it seems this has become a discussion thread, so maybe it could be moved to Serious discussion

On the whole, I agree with Valkyyria the most so far. By-product or co-product, if we're going to kill them to provide for ourselves, I think using as much of the animal as possible is the best idea. As for the humane/inhumane thing, I've been to farms where livestock are raised and they were treated pretty well. I can't say for sure if they were being raised for mass slaughter though. It may have been for the purpose of slaughtering them to provide for a single family of farmers.
