It's a fact that electronic music takes a lot less effort to produce than any other kind of music. However, I still feel that if the end product is decent, then it's a decent song. And what Legion said.
I think he just means that he likes or doesn't like a piece of music for its sound, not for the effort that went into it. If he liked a piece of music that took little effort and thought it sounded better to him than a piece of music that took more effort, he would be okay with that. I like that, and I respect it. However, I also respect the opposite side of the spectrum. Here is my opinion: music should be fun. It won't be sometimes, especially if the person is performing, writing, or recording music as a part of their career, but overall producing music should be fun. There is one line in the sand that I draw, and that is when a piece of music does not challenge its audience. When a rap artist uses the same, tired hyper-masculine type of lyrics to put down women and promote violence, I stop listening. When a producer of techno, disco, or dubstep sends no real message with their music, I stop listening. When a rock, metal, or alternative band simply plays loud and crazy music but has no real message other than "Hey, my girlfriend is watching me sing this, I'm so good", I stop listening. I actively seek out bands whose lyrics make me think and whose songs are enchanting. I think that's probably why I like different bands and different genres of music.
I agree with parts of this. I feel that when the producer/writer gets enjoyment out of making music, it sounds better than if someone is rushing to get a song complete to please their fans. As for lyrics, I generally ignore them and listen to the rest of the music. Vocals nowadays usually have no meaning. But when they do, it can make the song really powerful. But considering that the majority of lyrics are about violence, money or relationships, good lyrics are becoming rarer.
Talking about music. I agree that good lyrics are hard to find. That's why I listen to Blind Guardian.
:3 I hope you enjoy a band who writes a fantasy story that spans several albums.
The reason I can't stand dubstep is because it sounds horrible. I swear, sometimes it feels like it's trying to rip my eardrums out. I don't care if a dubstep piece took you 3 years. If it sounds bad, I'm not listening to it.
