At the end of the episode, Celestia and Luna were holding a notebook of some kind. Anyone care to venture a guess as to what exactly it was?
I've heard Star Swirl the bearded book. maybe it's the like the MLP version of the Book of Oa. I dunno. I have an idea of what season 3 will hold, I feel that if I'm right it might be the last season.
Not very likely, considering Hasbro has already made most of the arrangements for a 4th season. And on the notebook, I've found that the show loves to foreshadow, so I think it will have a pretty big role later on.
well my theory is that that's some kind of report/log book of all Twi's study work, and that "next level" might be that Luna will be Twilight's mentor along side with Celestia.
An examination of progress maybe? Have you noticed whenever they do something for the good of Equestria, a stained glass window depicting it magically appears? Celestia and Luna don't have them made, so they must be enchanted in some way, like a trophy room that needs filling. Also, did anybody notice the look Luna gives to Twilight as she and Celestia are talking?... It's the kind of look that implies stuff's going to go down, but she will say nothing about it. And what about this "next level of studies"? Apparently, ideas of Twilight becoming an alicorn are not actually true. But, what if she is offered but actually doesn't take it up so that she can stay with her friends? If you think about it: Celestia = Day Luna = Night Twilight = Dawn/Dusk/Twilight Cadance = Love From the trailers you can see there will be an episode with those horses instead of ponies, what if they're there to assess Twilight's capability of reaching alicorn status, and will take her away from her friends if she's deemed worthy?
Considering that it was only on the screen for a few seconds, I thought it was nothing. Then again, it might play some big role in the season finale. Who knows.

My thoughts were that it was Luna's Book, I kind of had a hunch that Luna would eventually take a part in Twilights training if she never got an apprintance of her own. So yeah my guess is Luna will take over Twilights studies with Celestia still on as an advisor of course.
This. Like Yeti said, it's probably keeping track of Twilight's studies. And now she's moved on to the next level of her studies (pony equivalent of a phD maybe?) Another idea is that Twilight gets the chance to be an alicorn. After seeing DoDo's thread and when Luna seemed pretty reluctant to agree with Celestia right at the start, it's possible that she could be of royal blood. (Although highly unlikely)
