I would like to hear what others here thought of the crystal empire villain. Myself, I do consider him to be a cool villain, though I wish he was more established as a character, not my favorite, at least not yet, but damn those dark shadowy powers are cool. I would like to see more of the Shadow King in the future. Looking at the evidence though, it is totally possible that Sombra did posses Luna after his fall, meaning that, if this is the case, he already appeared in the series as Nightmare Moon. Also, awesome art already.
More seriously, I like King Sombra's backstory, but if they were to perhaps build upon it a bit more or give him a bit more screentime rather than "RRRGGG I ANGRY" Every 10 minutes, it would help a lot. His character was not, how should I say, "developed." Worst villain so far unless they make some references to him in the future. He felt more like a plague they were trying to keep out than a villain.
I think they purposely made him almost a blank slate to see if the fandom would do the same to him as we've done to many of the backgrounds. Or maybe I'm just tired and delusional..
I think we he'll come back some day, I mean yeah he blew-up, but his still intact horn went flying torwards the screen, lots of villains have that fun little deus-ex of being able to regenerate as long as a piece of them is left, so maybe just maybe he'll be back someday. Or maybe his horn is what Trixie uses in that evil alicorn amulet she supposedly has in the upcoming Magic Duel episode, would explain how she's able to beat Twilight. Guess we will just have to wait & see.
I think he's awesome. Did anyone else love how fast he could spread his darkness across the empire? Plus his voice was perfect for that of an evil king. Hurray for ponified Ganondorf.
Does that mean Cadence is Zelda? For Sombra, as we know very little about him I have already made up a small bit of backstory. Relating to my OC villain. Long ago during Discords rule, a chunk of Equestria was liberated by the powers of the Alicorn King, carving out an empire of order in opposition to chaos. But Discord was a great foe and the King slowly grew more and more desperate for the power to defeat Chaos, he started to delve into the dark arts to gain the power he seek. Even though the evil nature of the magic slowly corrupted him into nothing but a dark tyrant, so desperate to defeat Discord he did no longer care for the wellfare ofhis underlings. The King selected a few unicorn apprentices to teach the pinnacle of the dark arts, one of these was a young grey colt named Somber, who would later call himself Sombra. The Alicorn King taught Sombra many things, but above all that a firm hoof was required to prevent an empire to fall into chaos, to allow to much freedom was nothing but inviting disaster at the hands of the chaos powers. It is so that it is better for the ponies to be nothing more than a workforce for empire so that they might defeat their enemy istead of being soft and fall. Eventually the ponies of the land got tired of the King's tyranny and issued a rebellion led by the Alicorn King's daughters, Celestia and Luna. As the King was overthrown, Sombra escaped to the north, with several of his masters books on the dark arts. Eventually Sombra found himself at the head of the crystal empire, ruling with an iron hoof such as his master taught him, and he found that fear was very effective for maintaining order. As king, Sombra did only have one purpose, to maintain the legacy of his dark master and crush Equestria under his dark arts to once again prove that his rule was better than theirs.
At first, I didn't really like his design (especially the garish color scheme), but now I have to say, I pretty much liked King Sombra. He was just present enough to feel threatening without getting in the way, so to speak. And maybe I'm just overthinking it, but interestingly enough, whether by choice or by coincidence, his design (shaggy mane, intense eyes, fangs, blood red (at times) horn) might be inspired by some eastern unicorn creatures, some of which are evil, carnivorous and/or impale victims with their horns. Like this one (even though it's neither particularly evil nor equine, the overall description seems to fit pretty well). Make of that what you will...
King Sombra was an awesome villain I would love to see more of him or any of the villains that have appeared in the show so far again except Nightmare Moon the chances of seeing her again now that she's once again Princess Luna are very very slim.
I was disappointed. They didn't answer any questions about WHY he was doing what he was doing. Why was he so angry? Why did he enslave the crystal empire in the first place? What were his motivations? He had almost no back-story or explanation. He wasn't bad, but there was so more potential there that went unused. The crystal ponies feared him so much they refused to think about that time when he ruled, but WHY?!? That got me a bit frustrated.
I'd like to see him return in the season finale or something. Then we could get more backstory and motivation for him. All I can really tell at the moment is he's been corrupted by dark magic, and even that's a bit of speculation I think.
King Sombra was the king of a glorious kingdom, until the day he discovered dark magic. He became addicted to it and over time, the magic twisted his body into his smoky, evil current look. He destroyed his kingdom, and with the magic clouding his mind, he forcefully took control of the Crystal Empire. That's my backstory for him, and I'm sticking to it.
I guess it's a good thing I have no clue who that guy is, otherwise I'd be intentionally ripping off the story of something else.
That is a Blood Elf from World of Warcraft. Their storyline was that they were good until they discovered arcane magic, which they got addicted to, which in turn corrupted them and changed their bodies. Remind you of a recent post? :derpe:
All this talk about him not getting enough screentime, lines, etc makes me want to find his lines, well, here they are: Episode 1: King Sombra: [roars] King Sombra: [growl] King Sombra: [growls] Episode 2: King Sombra: [growls] King Sombra: Ahh. King Sombra: Arrgh! King Sombra: [growls] Yess... crystalssss... King Sombra: [laughing] King Sombra: [laughs] King Sombra: [laughs] King Sombra: Cryssstal Heart... King Sombra: [growls] [laughs] King Sombra: Ahhhhhh... King Sombra: My cryssstal ssslavessss... King Sombra: [growls] That is mine! King Sombra: [growls] King Sombra: Huh? King Sombra: What? No... No! Stop! King Sombra: [roars]
Pretty good story you got right there although Princess Celestia said that she and Luna turned him into a shadow you made it sound like that was his natural form.
Sombra's an elf then! ^^ dbz, I forgot that point. Hmmm....geez, this guy could've been portrayed a bit better. XD
