So, here we have quite a serious discussion topic. Recently I've been watching and reading about a lot of crime and murders. and it's made me wonder. What could possibly cause a person, in their right mind, to kill another person, sometimes even a child or spouse? I personally do not find it to be possible, yet it still happens. We all know the main causes, greed, anger, jealousy, even unstable mental states of mind. But what do you think? What's your take on Murder, or any crime for that matter? Feel free to mention any instances of crime that you've encountered personally, or heard of. I'll start with a question, IS there anything someone can do besides killing someone else that will drive a person out of anger to kill them, and if so, do you think it's justified, and understandable for them to be angry and in turn, murder? Me personally, while there are some things that can really set people off, I don't think taking a human life is justifiable. No matter what the circumstances
People kill each other for many reasons...I don't think murder is usually justifiable, however sometimes it might be - longtime molested family member could try to kill her torturer and I wouldn't jail them for that, especially since in some countries like mine reporting it to police could be useless - it is often seen how rapist gets two years or less, and goes out in six months for good behavior, and then the victim gets all his fury. I wouldn't jail people for killing someone that sells drugs either because he is aware he destroys entire families but he doesn't stop. Any other case it is not justifiable, life is sacred overall...
Crime itself shouldn't be a problem if it was dealt with properly. Sometimes, bad stuff happens in the world and the ones responsible aren't being treated the way they should. Anders Breivik was an idealistic sick-minded person who killed 77 innocent people because of religious beliefs. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison. People like him should be given a death sentence if you ask me. 21 years in prison for the intended and planned murder of 77 innocent people is nothing. Compared to what "justice" is these days, i can live with crime...
Well i cant understand killing, to be honest. Theres just one exception i can at least understand a little One thing that can cause someone to kill another person is Revenge. For example for Childrape. As anette said in some countries rapists get away with like 5 years of jail for raping someone. While others get 15 years for money stuff. If a child was raped and the rapist gets 5 years in jail, the parents can be unsatisfied. And i can understand them. Taking ones life is a hard step, but imagine your 5 year old child got raped, so hard it nearly died, you see it suffer everyday from it. Well, i could understand the parents to get revenge. The other thing is Guns. I dont want to offend any american here on the forums, but just look at other countries that have harsh Gun controlls. Most dont have as much murders and overall crimes as america has. Look at germany. You need to do a lot of testing and stuff and i dont know to be able to own a gun legally and you still cant cary it around as you want. We dont have a lot of shootings around. It is easier to kill someone with a gun, since the most cant even really imagine what a gun does to the human body. Also there can be a lot of crimes when the economy of the country is bad. I can understand someone who steals food or money, when he has to feed his children but cant. Look at Greece at the moment. Their economy is completely broken. And at the moment there is a lot of crime like vandalism and stuff. But also there are different kinds of crime. Its also a crime to consume marijuana and still it is done quite frequently and i think its okay. I comitted a few crimes, since i smoke cigarettes since im 15 and the legal age here is 18. Normally it was not legal to buy that stuff. (Even though the person selling them would get the most trouble)
To be fair, even if a country imposed gun laws, that's not going to stop someone who wants to kill someone else. But I get what you are saying, it would reduce the amounts of shoot outs and general crime as it would be harder for the potential perpetrator to get weapons, but it won't necessarily reduce the the amount of crime. In my view, it would just make the crime a little harder to commit, or force the criminal to take a different route. Otherwise, thanks for the reply. As for smoking, I don't really care much for it, it's your choice in the end, I mean, you know the risks involved.
I think some murder is justifiable. No, not anything for religious, political, or personal reasons. But if you were given a gun, and you had Hitler, or Stalin*, or Osama bin Laden, would anyone really blame you for shooting them? More than likely, people would call you a hero. The same concept applies. If you had a serial rapist that wasn't being touched by the law, or knew that your next door neighbour was somehow a serial murderer that the law wouldn't do anything against if s/he were caught... what would you do? I know my decision. The death of one person to save others, in my opinion, is justifiable. *Please don't kill me, Russia, I actually like Stalin, just not his policies or anything.
True, doing research and finding an alternative would be a more honourable approach, but given the examples, would it be the most practical in a situation like that? Personally I'd draw the line at killing to save others kind of thing, as for the rapist, I would find alternatives
I think the Death Penalty should be abolished, but not from what people may think. I'd rather a murderer rot in prison than take the easy way out through death. Either way, he won't be harming anyone any time soon. But I'd rather not have to fund someone on Death Row's execution with my tax dollars.
^This. So many people regard the death penalty as the worst thing that can happen, when really, it gets done pretty quickly and that's that. I prefer letting them stew, and maybe even giving back through prison community service, like cleaning up the roads.
People who murder should be killed the same way they killed someone. If they killed multiple people in different ways, then pick a number from a hat or something. Death may be the "easy way out" but I still prefer it over them living the high life in prison with 3 hots and a cot every day.
Easy. For lesser crimes. Lock them up for a few months. For moderate crimes. Again. Prison. Maybe beat them up a little bit everyday but nothing too serious. Severe. Kill them. However. If i was gonna kill someone. They would have to have done something i deem unforgivable. They would have to have shown no regret in doing it. In that fashion it would be somewhat justifiable.
In the US, as far as the death penalty goes, from what I've been taught when I was going through college, it neither increases nor decreases the amount of crime in any significant manner. The one significant effect it does have, however, is it increases the costs of justice. This is because of the mandatory appeal process that must be done, as well as how long the inmate is forced to sit on death row. Adding in all fo the last meals on top of that makes it even worse. Concerning guns, while I am unfamiliar with violent crime rates outside of the US, in the US statistics show that states with less restrictive gun control laws have a lower violent crime rate than those who try to restrict legal gun ownership. Illinois, Washington DC, etc have astronomically high violent crime rates when compared to states that embrace the second amendment. Furthermore, it is important to remember that the gun is simply a tool. If guns killed people without the user being the problem, then how are screwdrivers and hammers any different? This brings me back to the main intent of this thread which is that, in my opinion, no right minded person would kill another human being except for being in the defense of self, others, or his/her country. This is of course only relevant to our society. Other societies have different views on life and its sanctity, especially older ones, not to mention back when there was no human society.
I think that the only time someone should be killed is when they commit a crime worthy of death. And I believe that those who deserve to die should die. I'd prefer it if the murderer dies rather than regular people having to pay for his welfare via taxes.
I want to doubt that, but I have no idea how prisons really work, so you could be right. Who cares if the murderer gets the easy way out through instant death? If you end his/her life right there, you're just cleansing the human race straight away. Once one commits a murder and gets out of prison, it'll leave a bad record for them and it'll be incredibly tough for them to be accepted anywhere. This rejection will cause them to get angry and commit more crimes. Instead of paying for them to live, they should just die. They knew the consequences of murder, yet they still decided to do it. I believe that if penalties were stricter, people woiuld think a lot harder before attempting murder.
