While I like this idea as a concept, I feel it'd go a lot different in practice because there's a lot that we do that goes below the radar.
I feel that this would be the chance for all those little things that do go under the radar to have their chance to be appreciated.
Yeah but I suppose you're not always going to find every little good thing that somebody does unfortunately, that's just life. It doesn't mean a system shouldn't be implemented because of this, because you never know, there's a high chance it could work, no harm in trying.
This fits mostly with what I had in mind. First I'll just state, I don't really like the idea of users applying for an award themselves, it turns into boasting. With the exception of of Pony of The Year, awards should be based soley on recognition of a user and the things they have done, essentially the purpose of an award system. This doesn't need any sort of complex system or application process, there's simply no need. If we do make standard awards, and I would like to, I'd like it to be treated as a 'caught doing good' type deal, where if the staff or users (via meaningful votes) recognizes any user that has been really helpful to others for example, they can be given an award. The forums I were members of in past years all did it with this a simple method like this. For example, they had an award for users who spread the most holiday cheer around the forum, which I was recognized for, along with many others, and it was fun. There was no popularity contest and it was great to see who got them. My point is I'd like to make good use of the awards system, but via streamlined and simple means, so that in the end it's fun and not a headache. :derpe: I'd also just like to point this out, while a nice idea, the system is limited to one instance of an award per user, though a user can accumulate multiple awards. A page does exist, http://everypony.com/forums/awards.php - - they would appear there, and of course I would place it on the navbar where it can be easily accessed should we make proper use of the system.
Delete my comment without explanation...again. Oh Staff. This is the reason this award is a bad idea.
If they don't explain then the reason should be quite obvious. If it keeps happening, clearly you have an issue with posting things that get deleted for reasons obvious enough to not need explanation. You should work on that. If anything, it shows the staff are doing their job, one I think they deserve at least a small recognition for.
You said you'd try not to make posts that'd get deleted. But here's not the place for this. I think Poetic/Mike have the right idea and I hope that idea comes to fruition.
Funny, says here the next time you post an offensive and/or harmful post to anyone on the forums, you're going to the moon for a month or so. Okay, so I'll set this whole thing up. Again. Should it be -after- the current competition, or later during it?
Gah technology, it can send man to the moon but not put a number count in brackets :derpe: No worries, just a floating idea I had. Yes I'd seen this, it's exactly what I was thinking, what I meant was it's a little bare at the moment with only radio staff and pony of the year awards. It'd be cool to see what's possible to "unlock" so to speak.
Speaking as a member, I feel that an award system could really increase membership numbers. Besides, hitting milestones like 2,000 posts used to get you a new special user title, but since that changed, milestones mean... Well, nothing. I would consider it motivation. Something to strive for. But I must agree with the idea of giving out awards based on what people do that has been recognised by admins. It could encourage more people to do some good.
I know that members can request shout-outs to other members on the community posts, but perhaps this could be turned into an award? I agree with Calvin, I think that rewards will encourage members to be active here.
You summed up what I was trying to say. :3 I've been on... 3 forums before with this sort of thing - Gaia, Swiftor and (not sure if they still do it) Serebii. They have /huge/ amounts of people on them. Other than the award system and the shocking lack of ponies, it's pretty much the same as this forum. I mean, we do have non-bronies joining as I have seen a few, so who's to say we can't make it big too?
I hope i'm not getting ahead of myself here, but I got bored and started working pre-emptively on some award ideas. (complete with artwork):derpe: Twilight Sparkle Award Earn this award by being a library of knowledge for those who need it. Help new members find their way. Pinkie Pie Award It's true some days are dark and lonely. And maybe someone feels sad but you will be there to show them that it isn't that bad. Get this award by turning some frowns upside down. Fluttershy Award Tolerating hate is one thing, but being proud of who you are and showing some assertiveness along with your kindness is the key to this award. Rarity Award Those who share their ability to help others without ever asking for anything may receive this gem of an award. Applejack Award Those who can honestly say what's on their mind, and don't fear to tell the truth regardless of the concequences will receive this award. Rainbow Dash Award Those who are loyal to the site by reporting posts, or those loyal to their friends simply for being there for them when needed can receive this award. Harmony Award Those who managed to earn all of the above awards automatically receive this one. -------------------- This is my view on a set of awards for everyone to get. The requirements for getting them are somewhat written in such a way you can only get them by being yourself in order to earn them. Trying to force yourself to accomplish these requirements would be nearly impossible. I suggest that once a member has received 5 seperate nominations from other members per award, the staff can choose to give said award. And ofcourse asking for nominations is not allowed. For staff, I suppose a single Staff Member of the <insert time period> award is enough?
I like. A lot. Apart from the Applejack one could land some people on The Moon if they ain't careful. Rules would have to be in place on that one. Apart from that, I approve.
That's pretty much the point, though i doubt anyone would ever end up on the Moon. The point of EARNING an award is to do something worthy of it, which in this case is telling the truth regardless of any risks.
