Hello everyone, I have started this thread to ask what people think of the windows 8 OS (Operating System) and whether there any other OS that you guys can suggest. The reason I am asking is because I am going to be getting a gaming rig and I`m wondering whether it would be worth the money for windows 8. Thanks for your suggestions and comments!
Windows 8 is fine, but then, I got for free due to my University. If you stick to the Aero theme - the theme you're used to with Vista, 7, etc. - then you should little to no problem. Just stay away from Metro. It's silly to have on a non-tablet. Be sure to get Start8 from Stardock if you get it. It depends on price really, since I can get them for free, may as well upgrade. If you have to fork out like $100 for it, probably not, since you can get 7 cheaper and can do the job well.
Thanks for the feedback guys, I am still considering it. I will wait until I have more info on WIN 8 before I consider getting it with my rig.
Tried Windows 8, it's ok but I will not be upgrading anytime soon. Aero experience isn't much different aside from no start button. I think the Metro UI is completely silly on anything but a tablet, but it's certainly usable. As Xan said, you really want to get Start8 if you really want some sort of start menu functionality. Right now it just seems to be Metro in a frame, maybe that'll change to something more custom in the future. My primary reason for not being thrilled is that instead of getting productivity done quicker, there's a lot of unnecessary jumping required back and forth between Aero and Metro to get anything done. Besides, I don't need all the fancy built in social networking sharing and "entertaining" crap that the new interface seems to focus on. Give me a workstation, not a toy. Oh the glory days of Windows 9x, how I miss you so.
It's crap, but hey, I'm a certified Windows salesman with Currs/PC World so I have to say it's the best thing ever!
Not as good as XP... :derpe: Not as good as Windows 3.1 Business Edition. I kid... the serious part is that I find 7 superior in speed and integrity, (so better for gaming.)
From all ive seen on the PC of a freind of mine (he also gets windows 8 from university), i dont like it. I would prefer windows 7.
Pretty much what Xaniith said. It's practically like windows 7 except for the metro, but since you can get start8, it's pretty much the same operating system but faster. The metro is still usuable though, which is why I haven't bothered getting start8. Since most PCs now come with windows 8, you may as well get it (unless you're building it from scratch). Or you can wait for Steam to come to Linux. EDIT: Also, you can assume that technology will now be more geared towards touch. So if you're not a fan of Windows 8, you're going to have to be forced to like it in the future (or use Linux).
Metro on a tablet or phone is very nice, however. Take it from me, I've got a HTC 8X. No lag whatsoever and everything's nice and clean. Look at dat beauty.
Thanks for the feedback guys! I will take this into account when I order my pc. If anything, I can change OS later.
It 'looks' really good, and I imagine it will be for both phones and tablets or even touchscreen computers. More so, it's perfect for the typical family - mum, dad, kids - surf the net - share photos on facebook - do some homework and making Christmas cards, even playing the odd game. What I don't think it's good for is a mouse... metro + mouse? As many have said just the mere thought makes you think eh... No. I don't think I'll be upgrading anytime soon anyway.
My biggest problem with Win8 is that Metro and Aero don't even use the same programs. You could have two completely different windows of IE open and can't go from one to the other. It feels like two different OSes at the same time. Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2
I use Windows 8 on my PC. I'm not too sure why everyone hates it, once you get used to it it's really not that bad. I also really like how the start-up time is lightning fast :3
If you're using a pc, use windows 7, if you're using a touch screen laptop or tablet, Windows 8 is Ideal. I wouldn't use it for gaming. Get windows 7 rather if you're going to do that.
I disagree. The start menu is surprisingly useful at loading up games. At least for me. I hate having anything on my desktop, so just hitting Super and clicking on a game is incredibly nice.
