I don't know if anyone has asked/thought of this before or even if this is the right forum for this but my imagination is working. A little background - I am legally blind so I have life experience with this sort of thing. Also please don't worry about offending me (making jokes or asking what some might consider a stupid question). I don't expect they would do something like this but if a blind pony character was developed, what would the pony be like? Answering my own question...I imagine a blind pony would be a Unicorn because of its magic powers. I imagine a blind unicorn could use its magic in the same way a blind person uses a cane or a guide dog. Am I offbase here? I apologize if I posted this in the wrong place. I am new. I am interested in what others think.
I can see the CMC having an episode where one of their classmates is blind, and they have to learn to accept people with disabilities.
Um...I hope this dosen't sound too prying/offensive or anything. But how is it that you use the computer? Like, how do you know where stuff is, like the url bar on the screen and the words that are written, or are you just hard of sight? Again, sorry if that sounds meanly phrased or anything, I'm just curious. As to the question, I don't really think it would be too much different from how we have those aids on earth. I assume that unicorns would be able to use magic like you suggested, or at least according to what fanfics I've written, but until we see it in the show, we don't really know.
Good call! I think that is the most likely use for a character as I have asked about. Oh please don't worry. I don't mind answering your question. Since I have some sight (not completely blind) I fiddle around with the screen resolution settings in Windows. I also have a large monitor (about 22 inches). Folks who are completely blind can still use the computer as well with use of screen reading programs (like JAWS). In answering my question you have brought up a good point. I don't think we would totally know until they created a blind pony, which I don't expect them doing. That wouldn't stop someone from writing a fan fiction though. I think that a blind pony might be different in fan fiction than in actual use in the series. While my imagination has a blind pony be a unicorn with the ability to use magic to "see" - I think the series might want to show the blind pony using aides like in real life...assuming the moral they are getting at is to accept people with disabilities. Thanks for your help. That's definitely a better way to do it. I should have known that since I use that shortcut all the time! LOL
Personally, I think something like that might be a bit too much of a touchy subject for this show. It's just too serious of an issue in real life for me to imagine them doing it in the show. It's not that I think parents would be offended or anything, but something about it just seems like it could cause problems. I don't know how to really explain it or what kind of problems I think would arise, but I just can't help thinking it could cause some problems.
^^ I would have to agree, for the most part. Typically cartoons are very light-hearted and most avoid touching on any serious issues. That isn't to say it hasn't been done or won't be, but it's an issue most studios would rather avoid. Ever see a cartoon where one of the characters had cancer? Probably not.
I stand corrected then. Although, I still doubt it's something that is done very often. Everybody being so easily offended these days.
Well, the cartoon series Avatar the Last Airbender did have a blind character, a little girl named Toph who happen to be one of the most awesome characters in the series. Despite not being able to see she was such a natural with earthbending she was able to sense everything connected to the earth in a large radius, very similiar to the unicorn idea. She is also one of the strongest fighters in the series. http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Toph_Beifong I am also relatively sure I have seen a character with cancer in a Peanuts cartoon once. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why,_Charlie_Brown,_Why?
That is very logical, considering what has gone down with the Derpy controversy. If it is done at all it would have to be done very carefully and flawlessly or it will come off the wrong way. As I said, I have absolutely no expectations that a blind pony character would be created. Wow. Cool! I've never watched that series before. I'll have to check it out. That does tell me my imagination is aimed in the right direction. I remember that too.
What if Rainbow Dash became the blind pony? Of course being Rainbow Dash she'd no doubt become the bad ass she is all over again.
I like the concept of a blind pony, but like people stated about the Derpy controversy, Hasbro/ HUB kinda has to walk on eggshells to keep it's base and please as many ponies as possible. I really miss Derpy though. @Brian: Good idea man, if it can't be canon, then fanon is the next best thing. Hope the best for you fellow brony
Very interesting. That would create quite a story arch. First of all how would Dash lose his sight? A flying accident? Then comes the coping with the loss of sight...I know folks who have lost their sight and it is very difficult to cope with (It's almost easier to be born blind/legally blind). I expect that ultimately Dash would be knocked down a peg or two before picking himself up to overcome adversity. EXACTLY! Obviously this is not anything that the show would tackle but it has fanfic written all of it. It would be quite a character development for Dash. Thanks man! I appreciate it.
Yay a legally blind friend! I love having friends of all different kinds! Anywho, I would love to see a blind pony in the show.Maybe with like a pet that helps guide him or her. I would personally love to see that. I have a blind friend in school. She is so nice and I find it fun helping her with getting to classes and I actually want the school to surprise her with a seeing eye dog for her at the next winter wish assembly where they give gifts.
I think a blind pony would be a great idea! I'm ALMOST legally blind. Haha. It runs in my family. I can still see and everything. I just have to wear giant glasses. I think the blind pony would probably have an increased sense of hearing, sight, smell, or touch. It seems a bit cliche, but I think it would be a nice mirror to Pinkie Pie's pinkie sense. Perhaps Pinkie could predict some unknown problem, and the blind pony could help by sniffing out a far away fire or something and save Ponyville. The episode could teach that you shouldn't let anything hold you back, and even people who seem disadvantaged at first are capable of really amazing things, and ANYONE can be a hero.
I think you're right about it being a bit too touchy, I mean Derpy was pulled for being (possibly) offensive to some people and you never know what the reaction would be from the viewers. I don't know if it would offend people but it just seems like a touchy subject for MLP to touch upon, I think it could be pulled off though as other shows have done so in the past.
Incredible idea! I love it! great lesson/moral of an episode ^.^ i can just imagine it all playing out in my head right now
I like this concept. Not sure if anything near this will happen on the show, but I for one like this plot.
