So I'm pretty sure most of us have heard about the recent school shooting in America, right? Yeah. Apparently threats have been made for my school, and plenty of others in Southern Maine for tomorrow. I'm actually scared. I actually may not show up tomorrow. Eek. So what about other schools in America? What about y'all?
Not these threats, don't listen to them, seriously, unless the authorities come out and SAY that the threat is legitimate, just go to school. One time, in my junior high(7-8), there was a supposively serious bomb threat to the school, went to school that day, nothing out of the ordinary happened.
What people, the students or th teachers and such? That's the big difference. In my case, the students believed it.
Who believes it doesn't matter much, really. The most important question is where these rumors came from. Figuring that out will make it alot easier to know if it's true or not.
The majority of people who claim that they'll shoot everyone are just edgy teenagers who are too stupid for school. Don't worry about these threats, they aren't legit.
Minnesota is one of the safest place in the country. But its still scary if it happened. It is possible to happen here.
I wouldn't worry yourself; the odds are in your favor either way. That is a facile statement. All threats that reach the faculty are taken seriously, as they should be. Any "threat" to a school that is not recognized by the faculty is just a rumor, probably started for the purposes of defamation or to gain attention. In any case, these rumors should be taken seriously; threatening mass murder is not okay under any circumstances, and even people jokingly spreading those rumors need to be caught and punished. I have also been in school when a bomb threat was made. Several times in middle school (when I was in the seventh and eighth grade), our school was evacuated or locked down when the administrators learned of the threat. Each time, nothing actually came of it, but those leaving the threats were caught and punished.
It's just rediculous that kids in the US have to be afraid of bombs and shootings now when they go to school... Just rediculous. It can only have negative consequences for children having to grow up in such paranoia. Of all places, at least schools should be safe!
Only some of us are really scared, it's a threat yes, but our media blows things so out of proportion, it makes it look like these school shootings are commonplace, when they are really extremely rare. In fact, you're are probably be more likely to die on your way TO school than to die be a school shooting.
It's difficult to understand why many people think that the solution to guns, are more guns! If no-one had a gun, wouldn't school shootings be a bit... tedious...?
Actually, he aquired those weapons illegally, about 95% of robberies and crime related to guns, the guns were acquired illegally. There have been many school shootings stopped because a teacher or principle was armed. There was an off duty cop with her gun that stopped another mass shooting in a mall. If people that follow the law and have legal fire arms were allowed to carry in more places, less shooting would happen. If you don't have a gun, and someone had a gun and had to pick between robbing you or someone who is armed, they go for the unarmed person. I believe, that if you ban all fire arms, only criminals will have fire arms, this will make the black market thrive, shooting will go up, robberies, rapes, and murders will go up because no one will be armed to protect themselves. Cause only those who follow laws will be unarmed. Criminals will not simply hand over their weapons. When I turn 18, Im getting a shotgun for home defense, and when Im 21 Im getting a pistol for personal defense. The statistics are there, look at chicago, it has the strictest gun laws, BUT the highest crime rate. Explain that.
We've had these in Finland, I think 2007 and 2008/9? They've been in the news in Murica too. The first was by Pekka-Eric Auvinen, who killed 8 people and himself, then Matti Saari. I can't remember the exact number of victims of each case, but even one is too much. Auvinen was a smart kid, but he was bullied for many years, leading him to becoming edgy, unsocial and anxious. It was too much for him... We get these threats like once in a month, but thankfully only 2 have happened. I hope there will be no more.
If you are talking about Adam Lanza and the recent Newtown shooting, he actually acquired those guns from his mom, who purchased them legally. However, I still agree with everything else you said. All the new gun laws congress is putting through is simply a knee-jerk reaction to one single incident. But as horrible as it was, the much, much bigger problem is the homicides that happen every day, all across the country. One or two killings a day may seem not so bad in comparison to a single mass shooting, but those one or two a day add up to tens of thousands each year. The Newtown incident is basically an extremely miniscule anomaly when compared to annual gun related death statistics. However, all the laws they are putting through will not solve a single thing. Requiring more extensive background checks, increasing the wait period to obtain a firearm and doling out less permits...all that's doing is making it harder for law-abiding people to legally purchase a gun. Do gang members legally purchase guns? Are mass shooters going to make sure they abide by the 10 bullet-per-magazine rule? No. Banning fully automatic weapons? Yeah, it seems like a good idea, until you consider the fact that almost any firearm can be modified to be fully automatic with easily obtainable parts and some gunsmithing know-how. Honestly, if I was ever in a place where a mass shooting started, I think I'd prefer it if almost everyone else around me was carrying...
You'll have a hard time convincing me the best solution to killing machines is to give them to everyone.
I did not say give them to everyone. Not everyone should have a gun, but I'd rather more guns were in the hands of people who would use them to stop criminals and killers, than just the criminals and killers. And due to the illegal gun trade, we'll never be able to take guns out of this country completely, so banning all firearms isn't much of an option either. Personally I think anyone who wants to own a gun should have one, so long as they undergo a background check and a psych eval.
