I've heard of people who watch and like the show, but don't really like the fandom, but the other way around sounds kinda strange to me...

There's no need to be so angry about it. I for one wouldn't mind. If he wants to be a ''fake'' brony let him be one. However, with that said, I must say, what's the point in calling yourself a brony if you don't watch the show or are not interested in it? Oh well, beats me.

IDK... just doesn't seem like something a non-brony would lie about. But then again, when I was in 5th grade, all of my classmates watched Blue's Clues (don't ask why) so I started watching it to fit in. This is way before I said, "The hell with fitting in. I'll just be me."

I watched a G1 episode for the sake of comparison. Twenty minutes of my life that I can never get back.

I can understand the reasoning, if any, behind a faker. It's the need to belong to something bigger than they are. They have this urge to fill an inadequacy or gap in their lives so it doesn't feel so mundane.

Not a bad theory, but why not then join a fandom you at least have some interest in?

I would not be able to wrap my head around something like that. If I like something I like it and I would like to be part of the community. I like 40k but I don't say I'm a huge 40K nerd because I don't play the tabletop and to be part of the fandom I need at least some tabletop knowledge, I only have knowledge of the books so I stay out of the fandom because I don't know anything about the tabletop. But I still really enjoy 40k and it's lore but because I don't want to be seen as the ignorant boob that I am I stay out of that stuff.

It's almost like the non committal religious guy.
They want to say they're a <insert religion here> or in this case <insert fandom here> so they can still belong but still have the plausible deniability when things aren't looking good so of them. This way they can get out of there and claim they were just dabbling into it. 'Testing the waters by taking a quick swim' would be a good phrase to sum the thought process up behind these people; you'll enjoy it but you can lie about your involvement and claim experimentation if you get confronted.

I never said that these people were brave. I'm simply speaking from my own experience from another fandom.

Not exactly sure how this post got here. I honestly don't remember posting this here.

Huh. Weird. I think Poison's post might be one of those weird glitches where stuff ends up in the wrong thread.

Well, I wouldn't openly be silly on a topic like this anyway. That's granted that even was interested in posting on this. So a glitch would be plausible in this case. Anyway, that post that was randomly added was probably from a thread like the Nom Nom Nom Thread.

I think I'm similar-but-opposite of a fake brony: I watch the show, even write fan-fiction, but don't consider myself a fan. Not out of any shame, though, since I'm pretty sure just admitting that you watch the show would be enough if that were a factor.

I haven't talked to or seen a fake brony at all, but I don't mind them. I sometimes don't consider myself a pegasister because I don't watch the show all the time, but I watch it occasionally. There are some who will argue that they say they are a brony/pegasister when they don't have a clue on what the show is.

If you do find one, just mind your business. Don't judge them for it, but if they do talk to you/you do talk to them, suggest them the show. Watch the first episode and work your way from there.

I've never really called myself a fan, truthfully. I keep an eye on the show, I read a lot of fanfiction and I've seen some associated fan projects, but I don't consider myself obsessed in the same way I would over Touhou or the Pizza Cats.

I really don't get why one would be upset because of a "fake" brony. Really, it's a trivial thing at worst. If people want to associate with the show or the fandom for any reason, let them be. I talk with the bronies in reddit and many of them don't watch or even hate the show, but they like the community and the fan works.

Plus, there's the matter of how you establish what a real brony is. Who's to say? How many episodes you have to watch? What if you just like the community?

Anyway, I consider myself a brony even if I haven't really seen the show in two years. I've been trying to watch it again lately but I just don't have the time, or I find it easier to do something else, like playing video games. I've seen about three episodes in the last two months. However, I post here and in two MLP subreddits.
