I find it kind of silly how people are claiming we have the best fandom. Just about every fandom is going to say that, so it seems to only serve to clump us in with the best of the worst. As for the worst fandom, I think the lot of you can agree with me when I say the DeviantArt fandom. Why? Because it's a conglomeration of every fandom, not to mention the worst of said fandoms. Notice that when people make terrible OCs, you'll generally find them on DeviantArt. I'm looking at you Sonic, Homestuck, and Brony fandoms. (Sidenote: Putting up your pony creator-made OC up on deviantart. -Cringe-)
I'm pretty cool with most fandoms, actually. One that I've had a considerably hard time understanding is Homestuck. They're such a vocal and prominent fandom on the internet, but I can't understand the appeal of the actual comic. I've read a few of the issues (if that's what I should call them) but it didn't seem any better to me than any other indie comic on the web. I don't have a problem with homestuck fans, but I can't help but be a little irked apparently being the only one who doesn't get any of the jokes/references. I have to say, though, I despise PewDiePie and Ray William Johnson fans. It's something completely different from me hating their videos or their channels (which I do. Passionately). I hate most PewDiePie and Ray William Johnson fans because every video that I've seen even hinting at an opinion that is anything other than undying love for them is instantly bombed on YouTube with dislikes and comments like "You're just jealous," and unbridled rage. A lot of YouTube bronies are the same way with anti-brony/pony videos, but not nearly to the scale of PewDiePie and Ray William Johnson fans.
^basically this no fandom is better than other really. Just because someone likes Twilight or Biebber, and I don't understand why do they like it, doesn't mean that their fandom isn't any less meaningful than ours. Let them have their fun. It's what makes them happy as well as ponies get us happy. As far as people in fandom, you'll find good and bad people everywhere, in any fandom. And hey, I'm sure that A LOT of bronies are active (or were active) in some other fandom. I heard that lot of people talked about Sonic fandom. Well, I was part of Sonic fandom (not really active almost a year now), and well, I had good time there. Sonic fandom was actually place where I heard about the ponies in the first place. Also, as Poetic said, you can just watch the show and not be part of fandom (like I watch Top Gear UK regularly (like I watch mlp), but I'm not part of any Top Gear forum, or fandom). Yes some fandoms have their "things" (like biebber fandom had those all twitter stuff and idk what), but hey, we have our "things" as well (like ponyfing all memes).
Against my better judgement, I just checked out Ray William Johnson and PewDiePie. I want my five minutes back.
That's pretty much how I feel. Hating someone because they like something is pretty silly. You're generalizing. Besides, youtube will give you poor impressions of all sorts of people.
Allow me to play devil's advocate for a second. Yes, it's true that each fandom has its ups, and its downs, and no intelligent and productive member of any fanbase is going to deny that, or start a war against other fandoms, or hate someone/love someone just because they're a member of a fandom, but, come on guys, I think we're taking this discussion a little too seriously, and I see no real reason to "white knight" over something as trivial as an opinion based thread on a Brony forum. It's a double edged sword. If you insist that no fandom is better or worse merely because it is purely a matter of opinion, you also must accept that someone may believe a particular fandom is the best or worst, and that they're entitled to their opinion, because to not do so would be hypocritical. Would I say that Bronies are the best fandom? Sure I would. I've been a part of a lot of passionate fandoms over the years, and I've never enjoyed being apart of any fanbase more than I have the MLP fanbase. That's my opinion. And I acknowledge that others may have different opinions. But I enjoy being a Brony enough to stand by my opinion and not pussyfoot around it, so to speak. You poor soul... I've got some hot cocoa and a warm blanket on the way. Everything's going to be alright. Of course I'm generalizing. I'm not going to name every PewDiePie/Ray William Johnson fan by name and point out my issues with them. My best friend is a huge Ray William Johnson fan, and we've been friends since 4th grade and he's essentially my partner in crime for everything. I'd never judge him for what he's a fan of, just like he'd never judge me for what I'm a fan of. I was merely pointing out something I dislike (well, despise, was the word I used) about other fandoms. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain that's what the whole thread is about. And it's funny that you brought up that YouTube gives an inaccurate impression of the PewDiePie/RWJ fandoms, considering both of those are actually based on YouTube :/
I have a new one I'd like to point out. Steam Powered User Forums. Specifically, the TF2 section. Inb4 notyourblog Kappa Also, @Dragon: I was saying Most as in bronies I personally know. I made it seem like I was trying to group every brony into the category, which was my mistake, because that wasn't my intent. Most bronies I personally know are like this. Shove MLP in people's faces when it's entirely unrelated.
We are no where near the best fandom. I think that the art side of the MLP:FiM fandom and the R34 side of the furry fandom are the worst...
Justin Bieber fans make me want to rip my hair out. Pop fans in general are annoying, but WOW these people! Anyone who falls for a 4chan trap twice in a month needs to rethink their life.
I don't think I really hate any fandoms. I don't like most of the (usually whiny) vocal minorities in most fandoms, if that counts. *member of the silent majority* Though, if I were to name one...probably the DotA one. Well, at least the "4chan-ish" parts of their forums and some players.
So much this xD I remember how they were talking on the radio about the whole "cut for beiber" thing as if it was a serious issue endangering our nation's preteen girl population. I also have to agree with Zephyr, DragonBait and Poetic - they all made exceptionally good points. Especially what Zephyr said about the dA fandom...I've seen some pretty amazing stuff on dA, but I've also seen some really horrible stuff, and the people that tend to hang out there rather than actually post art...bleh. Anyway, personally this is the first fandom I've actually belonged to. Kinda. The only other community I've been apart of that I could maybe see as being a fandom is the Lineage 2 community. L2 is an mmorpg similar to WoW, just 20% cooler An amazing game where I made some really good friends and have a lot of fond memories of....but the community at large was ATROCIOUS. I've never spent any time on 4chan, or the /b/ boards, but from what I've heard, the L2 community would give them a run for their money. On a semi-related side note, I did have a Twilight fan call me gay when she found out I liked MLP. :derpe:
Specifically, it was the comment sections of YouTube that I was referring to. Those tend to bring out the worst in people, for whatever reason. While PewDiePie might be based in YouTube, videos on YouTube (which are what he does) do not HAVE to have comment sections, and those comment sections are what give you impressions of the other people watching the video. But not everyone comments, and therefore not all PewDiwPie/Ray William Johnson fans comment. Therefore, those two sources of entertainment being based on YouTube has nothing to do with YouTube comment sections giving us a poor representative sample of their audiences. There is a self-selection bias where the comments and the users who post them are concerned. I dispute the existence of a "fandom", at least in the conventional sense. The idea that someone who likes one thing is fundamentally tied to other people who like that thing is ridiculous to me. For example, "Brony" might describe one fan of My Little Pony, but does not necessarily mean that he/she is the same as every other fan. They might only have one thing in common. "Fandom" is a word that easily leads people into generalizations and stereotypes. But that has less to do with my criticism of your comment and more to do with my criticism of the OP. You admitted you were generalizing. That's great, but since it was a generalization it was wrong. It might only be wrong because what you posted was a misrepresentation of how you really feel, since you don't hate people because they're PewDiePie/Ray William Johnson fans and you just hate the way that they act, but you should attribute that to each of their individual personalities, not to something they like. You said: Obviously, that statement was innaccurate. You don't hate all those fans, you hate the way some of those fans act. But they don't act that way because they belong to those "fandoms." They act that way because that's who they are on an individual level. Other "fandoms" have people just like them. Don't get mad at me if I misunderstood you; I only painted you with the colors you handed to me. You're right, that is what this thread is about. I don't dispute that. I also think the logic in the OP was faulty.
^^ That's the way to debate lol. Just throwin' this out there, but I actually like a couple RWJ videos. Not many, but a couple. I also have a tendency to avoid reading or posting comments on youtube. So I'd fall into the category of someone who likes something, but doesn't feel the need to scream about it or defend it vigorously on the internet. Like what has been said before, there are prolly more of us who are this way then those who are not.
It's not that Ray William Johnson is awful, he is just way too over hyped and his videos require no talent to make, He was just lucky enough to get in first on the video commentary fad.
Actually I like a few of his YFM music videos, the commentary stuff he does is pretty beat. Daniel Tosh is the only person I'll ever watch commentating on internet videos.
Whelp, I'll let everypony stick to what they like, I'm part of the Dota 2, LoL, PewdiePie, Game Grumps, Smosh, Brony, Whovian fandoms, so whether you like them or not, I don't really care. Just let me enjoy my videos and games and I'm happy!
