Ooh, a fitness/dieting conversation? Right up my alley.

Three years ago I was about 320 pounds, very, very overweight. Now I weigh 215-220 pounds and I'm in pretty good shape. Well, right now I have a bit of a pudge cuz I just came off my winter bulk, but I'll have that off by summertime.

Losing weight is a pretty simple concept. Stupid simple, really. Expend more calories than you intake, you lose weight. Consume more calories than you expend, you'll gain weight.

So to figure out how many calories you should be eating to lose weight, find a BMR calculator online. BMR is basal metabolic rate, or how many calories you burn per day by just breathing and generally being alive. Add in the amount of calories you'll be burning by doing at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. You can find out how much calories different exercises will burn in certain amounts of time by searching for it on google.

Add together your BMR and the exercise calories, and that's how many total calories you'll burn per day. All you gotta do is eat less calories than that, and you'll lose weight.

Typically, for males this means eating no more than 1800 calories per day. For females, 1500. As long as you stick to this formula, you will lose weight no matter what you eat. But that doesn't mean you can eat big macs and junk. Why? Because if you're limit is 1500 calories a day...a big mac is like 1000 calories. So if you do eat one, then that's pretty much all you can eat for an entire day. So if you don't eat healthy, you're gonna have a bad time. It is acceptable though, to allow yourself one (1) cheat meal per week,

And yes, for this to work, you do have to count calories in EVERYTHING you eat. At least for a month or two, until you get a good idea of how many calories different types of food have. You will also have to exercise AT LEAST 30 minutes a day. Start slow and gradually increase how much exercise you do.

TL;DR? The simplest way to start is to cut out junk, any sources of food that contain ungodly amounts of processed carbs and sugar. Pretty much any form of junk food (candy, chips, desserts, etc.) and don't drink anything but milk or water. Why? Because although soda is a pretty big culprit for contributing to obesity, pretty much everything you drink including gatorade, fruit juices, iced teas, etc.. all contain ridiculous amounts of refined sugar, and are pretty much just as bad as soda.

For an idea of how bad sugary drinks are for you, when I cut soda out of my diet, I lost 30 pounds without doing a single other thing. No joke.

After you become accustomed to living without junk, start eating proper portions. NO meal should be bigger than your fist. To make the change easier, eat smaller meals more often, every 2-3 hours.

After that, stop eating most carbs (bread, pasta, cereal, bagels, muffins, toast, pancakes, anything doughy.) And if you must eat bread or anything, buy whole grain varieties.

Couple this with regular exercise, and you'll be all set.

There's also several mental challenges you'll have to overcome, like not making excuses for yourself anymore, getting rid of denial, accepting your situation/how you look, motivating yourself, etc... But that's part of the journey and varies by person, and it's something you'll have to discover and overcome as you work towards your goals.

Anyway, I don't want to bombard you guys with TOO much info in one post, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Although if you plan on starting a serious weight loss routine, doing extensive research yourself on the internet really helps...for more than one reason. But, I'm here if you need me.

Oh yeah, if you're looking for the BMR calculators and stuff I mentioned earlier, you can start here: http://www.prosource.net/content/calculators.htm

But whatever you do, don't worry about BMI which is, pardon my french, absolute crap. BMI can say a 200 pound, 6ft 2in person is overweight or even obese, there's more to the 'obesity epidemic' than people think...

See that's the thing. I would never be able to force myself to measure all that stuff out. What I did was pretty simple it is working pretty well: I got a physically oriented job.

Absolutely correct. Bodyfat percentage is a far more accurate tool for measuring your body condition.

Weight (as in a scale) can also be misleading, but gives you a good approximate of where you are. But the difference of 5 or even 10 pounds isn't really something you're going to notice, nor does it really matter as much as what you look like. So you shouldn't aim for a certain weight, but rather a certain image, what you look like.

Of course, if you're overweight chances are your perception of what you look like is also off. There will be moments of clarity, when you look in the mirror and you're like... "wow I'm overweight" but for the most part people go around day to day deluding themselves into thinking they aren't as big as they are, or just straight up ignoring it. Thing is, you don't even realize you're doing it. I only came to realize that after I lost a good amount of weight and started to look at myself from a constantly objective point of view. (That would be one of the mental challenges I hinted at earlier)

That's kinda the thing... if you can't bring yourself to do something as simple as to quickly glance at the calories on the package of whatever you're eating and write it down on a notepad, then you prolly won't bring yourself to get serious about losing weight. You have to start with small steps, but if you really want to lose weight, you do have to start.
Counting calories, while annoying, is actually a pretty small step.

However, it isn't really necessary in the long run, but it is highly advised in the beginning just so that you get an idea of how many calories the food you're consuming contains.

If you really refuse to do it, you can always try the simple steps I listed in the above post by starting to cut out sugary drinks and other junk.

See above post.... Unless of course you don't care about losing weight and are happy with how you look, then by all means ignore me. To each his own. I won't harass anyone into doing anything they don't want to do

Re: General Chat Thread 3: It isn't gay if it's on the moon.

Who said I wasn't losing weight? I just said I can't do all the tedium. I must have lost about 80 pounds since getting this job.

Besides, it's not just glancing at calories and jotting it down, though that's annoying enough as is. It's also meticulously measuring out everything to make sure it's equal to a serving. Just thinking about it gives me a headache.

Then comes the part where I'm supposed to cut out pretty much everything that makes eating an enjoyable experience. I mean, not even so much as bread? Pass.

Yup, motivation is a big part of it, at least for the first...I dunno, year or so, until it becomes a lifestyle. Even afterthat, you'll need to refresh your source of motivation from time to time.

A lot of people pick stuff to motivate themselves like, they want to be healthier, live a longer life, blah blah blah. In my experience none of those work, they're too vague and far off. If they did work, people wouldn't smoke cigarettes or be overweight in the first place.

The trick is to pick something that is more personal, something that isn't too far off in the near future, it matters to YOU and isn't totally vague. For instance, my motivation was females. One girl, specifically. My thought process was that if I could get fit, get in shape, then maybe girls would give me a chance. That she would give me a chance.

I shouldn't have to point out just how stupid that is. First, losing weight does not change who you are, or your personality. And girls are more interested in your personality than your looks. Second, if I had ever asked her out, and she said no...then all that motivation goes right out the window. The only reason it worked was because I could never ask her out, because she was my best friends ex and my moral code disagrees with that.

BUT, despite being a pretty bad idea, it worked because it mattered to ME. A lot. I can't tell you what to use for motivation, but it's important to pick something that matters to you, something that gets you revved up and will push you to get out there and break a sweat every day.

BTW...don't expect instant noticeable results. Don't expect those results after 3 months. After 6 months or more of eating right and exercising, then you can expect to see some noticeable (but not major) changes in how you look. It takes time, and you gotta be patient and stick to it. That's why a lot of people fail.
