I take this approach because after years of study, I have come to this conclusion. Had you not wanted me to stand firm in my everything I've studied then they should not have called me ignorant to start with or even questioned me directly. We are born into religion because religion has a more loose interpretation then you may think. Religion is your personal collection of morals and ideas on how everything works. We ALL meet these requirements. If we are bringing up OLD definitions of religions then if your not Jewish you don't have a religion because that's how the world used to be. If you were Jewish you were religious, if you weren't you were a blasphemer. When I give my personal opinion and they directly call me out and say I'm ignorant, then I don't have to respect them at all.
They say these things because you've said things they found insulting. I think the most likely offender was the "brain dead" remark.
re·li·gion [ri-lij-uhn] Show IPA noun 1.a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a super human agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. 2.a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion. 3.the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions. 4.the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion. 5.the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith. Next? How old are you, anyway?
That's ever so tu quoque of you. Just because someone else does it doesn't mean it's okay for you to do it. That was essentially what I said. :/ My post meant that there is more than one meaning for these words, and that you are right only when a certain definition of "religion." is used. That does not necessarily make you wrong. I did not say you were wrong. You seem to have misunderstood me. I was agreeing with you, and even trying to refine your argument. And there was a reason I thought clarification was needed. It was because I agreed with you but thought that your argument could use a little beef. I was not arguing with you. If you look at my post from a different perspective, you might find that it complements yours. While I applaud your efforts, the Oxford English Dictionary is really the only credible scholarly dictionary. This might help: [/FONT]http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/161944?redirectedFrom=religion#eid I don't mean to seem as though I'm nit-picking, but this is an important point. You're on to something. I would like to know this as well.
Yes, but it seemed to me that they were pretty much on the same line, and dictionary was... less to post. I think perhaps there is a different word being thought of here. Since religion is specific to higher powers/the theological creation of the universe through means understood to be...
I kinda lumped yours in there and that was my mistake, I wasn't so much replying to you as I was the other people You do realize you basically said exactly what I said right? If you actually go through and define all those definitions (like you're supposed to do to get the full understanding) then you come to the exact same thing I just said, next?
No, I read it, I've done several debates on the definition alone. I've studied up on it, its not like I just sat down and was like "ooo, a definition! Lets take it at face value and not do any research" Actually, I don't and thats apart of my moral standing. As a southerner I'm a firm believer of "everyone deserves respect, till they prove they don't" The people I've seen so far have proved they don't. As an example of the extreme end, tell me how I need to respect a serial killers stance on how important human life is?
Ha, it was more of a "what's the most acceptable in my discourse community" kind of thing. I came to much the same conclusion. Different definitions are, of course, applied differently. Oh, no worries. I wasn't all that offended; I just wanted you to know.
This is not a debate if you don't respond to points or questions. I do not suggest you continue on this sort of thread. At least not in response to me.
Actually, yes you do, by dictionary definition I am a human being and if you choose to not see me that way you are, effectively, ignorant and self-absorbed. You had not right to question my standing and you have no right to tell me I need to give everyone respect, frankly, that's whats wrong with this world. All this "no child left behind" and "we're all good people deep down" **** is ruining the world, we are humans, we are inherently evil, we enjoy being bad, we enjoy being rebels, we enjoy doing what we are not allowed to do.
Ho, hohoho, I smell a lock coming if this keeps up! Let's drop the subject and be mature about this. Come on, now.
Actually according to my religion no I don't. I have a right to question everything as is human nature and frankly you've derailed this thread somewhat so then good day *tips hat*
Yes, lets. By simply locking down a debate just because it offends you would be a sign of immaturity. If you can't handle a debate or a serious topic then stay off these threads or do not join in. Simple process. The topic is still religion, just because you cannot handle it does not make it any less. Also, you are changing what your saying, you went from respect to what I am to what human nature is, debate topics are obviously not for you.
We are inherently survivors. Our conduct is purely learned from our situations. We only share not wanting to have our freedom taken. A part of survival.
You ignorant child... (I was using the word ignorant by its meaning, not as an insult. Excuse me... I'm gonna go to the naughty corner.)
You sir, are quite stubborn. Now, I admire your tenacity, but it has gone for far too long. I am locking this thread. And you /will/ be removed from this section. Next time, heed my warnings. - - Auto Merge - - Yar har, he's been removed from this section, so please, continue your /civil/ and /unimposing/ discussion here.
