So usually I aim for about 8 hours of sleep per night, lately I haven't been able to fall asleep till like 3 or 4 in the morning. (I'm thinking I may have insomnia.) Anyways, I got about 4 hours of sleep last night, and I woke up feeling the most refreshed and rejuvenated I have from a nights rest in a long time. When I get my 8 hours I usually feel really groggy and tired throughout the day. Today though, I felt awesome.
Is it possible that cutting the hours of sleep that I get per night in half helping me get more rest? Could it be 4 hours of sleep is better quality than 8 hours of quantity? Will this lack of rest catch up to me some day? Has anybody else had similar experiences as this? What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

speaking from experience by being a 24 hour care giver, I have to be awake while my client is awake who goes to bed at random times. I have a very random sleep schedule some times, I get few hours of sleep and feel good and other times I get 8 hours I feel like crap. I can say yes at some point it will catch up with you how it will effect you I can't say but yes it will catch up.

Often that is not the case, but it can also have a lot to do with other changes in your lifestyle, such as improvements on diet and exercise. Also, think about when it is you have been sleeping. Certain hours of the day can make a difference.

How can less sleep be better for you than more sleep I don't understand?

Not sure, I just know that I usually feel better with less sleep than I do with more. Taking into account what Nightstrike and Dilly Star say though, I'm probably gonna need to sleep more.

Because the TIME you actually spend sleeping isn't as big a factor in how rejuvenated you feel so much as is the QUALITY of sleep you get.

You're going to want to google 'Sleep Cycle' at some point and do a little research yourself, but I'll give you a quick explanation as long as I'm here.

When you are asleep you go through several cycles. 1, 2, 3, 4 and REM. Stage 1 is falling asleep. Stage 2 is a transition, 3 and 4 are known as DEEP sleep.

None of those contribute to the quality of the sleep you get. It is only in stage 5, otherwise known as REM, that your body gets the restorative sleep it needs.

    ------------------------
Fun facts: REM is known as "Rapid Eye Movement" because while you are in REM sleep mode, your eyes move around under your lids in random directions very quickly. REM is the lightest sleep cycle and the easiest one to be awoken from. It is also the shortest sleep cycle and the only sleep cycle in which you dream.
    ------------------------

So if that is the case, why do people say you need a full 8 hours? Well, technically you don't so long as you get enough quality REM sleep. However, since sleeping occurs in cycles, you need to go though all those other cycles to get to REM sleep, and since the REM sleep cycle is really short, you need to go through ALL those cyles 3 or 4 times a night to achieve enough REM sleep.

However, sometimes even if you sleep for 16 hours you may not get enough REM sleep if your body has difficulty staying in REM mode for whatever reason (like if you're really stressed and cannot relax) or your body may be able to get enough REM sleep in one cycle, making you feel perfectly rejuvenated after only a couple of hours (like if you happen to be really exhausted that night.)

The quality of sleep you get depends on many different factors, but it will vary night to night. But it is the QUALITY that matters, not the QUANTITY. However, this doesn't mean that you can survive on only 4 hours a sleep every night, because being able to get enough REM sleep in that short of a time period is NOT typical. Typically you'll need at least 8 hours to be fully rested.

Hope this helps, if you want to know more, Google is an awesome invention.

My opinion would be: if you're not sleeping eight hours, you won't feel tired, but it will be unhealthy for you

Well I do know that oversleeping can cause lack of energy during the day. However you shouldn't get less than 7 hours of sleep, what might help is if you use an alarm and stick to a schedule.

    As for your insomina

The average sleep a human should get depends on age category. Teenagers should get about 9. College kids and young adults 8. As you get up into your thirties and forties it drops to 7, roughly.

    Just fyi.
