I was disappointed of how he looks. From my perspective, he looks like a chicken dragon with a bear hand.
I can see what you mean. Everyone thought he was dark and something like luna but more Chaotic but you got to remember. This is a child show on a channel of The Hub.
I friggin' loved how they made Discord! If they just made him a male Nightmare Moon, I would have been more than disappointed!!!
This explains it all. Personally, I really like the character so far. Like the OP said it already feels familiar (as my link above summarizes in one letter) yet at the same time it's fresh, it's nothing we've ever seen before in the FIM world, and shows us that there is way more to this world than we have seen so far. He's also not a stereotypical villain, another case of the FIM team going against typical children's TV conventional character usage and IMHO enriching the experience all the more. Besides, we already have Dr Who fandom references, now we can throw in Star Trek in there too! Also, am I not mistaken that this marks the first guest star voice in the show? If I'm right then congrats J.D.L. for that ultimate brony honor!

I swear I've replied to every thread about Discord at least once now! This will actually make this the second, I believe, Star Trek reference made in the show, sort of. The first being the whole plot for Swarm Of The Century. That was kind of a shoutout to a Star Trek episode called "The Trouble With Tribbles". I'm not even a ST fan, and I know that! Which brings me to my next point. I wouldn't be surprised if a whole bucnh of Star Trek fans starting watching the show now because of who they have doing Discords voice! I'll sum up what I think of Discord in a shorter sentence (since I've already explained to death what I feel about him in other threads): Discord is definitely going to be the BEST VILLAIN EVER!

I'd actually almost say that topic is out of place, if I felt like being an over organization crazyhead that is lol. And Skydancer, I couldn't agree more, no matter the form or show this personality makes for the best antagonist ever. I wouldn't call him a villain because he's more of a trixter than evil, but he does antagonize well! XD
I look at discord and I don't look at him as " Okay. He gonna be used ones like luna and forgotten after the first Two part episode. To him he looks like he's gonna get sent back to his orignal state and get out somehow in the later episodes." My guess but we'll have to see for are selves.
I quite like the way the writers have decided to stylise Discord. It adds a sense of personality to him, rather than the clichéd evil-let's-kill-everypony sort of style.
You mean artists? I wouldn't of thought the writers have all that much say, but yeah I must agree. Although... he kinda reminds of Mushu from Mulan x)

I just have to say it everywhere I can... DisQord. It fit's so well it's scary! Overall I have to say he's shaping up to be an even more epic villain than I expected! I'm gonna die for a week now while waiting for part two! ARGH!
When I first saw spoilers of Discord, I was rather disappointed, but now that I've watched the first episode I can say I am genuinely impressed with him overall. I love the voice they gave him and his personality. In my opinion he's the best antagonist I've seen in a TV show so far.
Basically, i say the same. Well, except for the last part about him being the best antagonist. I can't remember anyone better at this point, though, but i am sure i've seen better. And basically THAT makes him awesome. He surely is the best antagonist in MLP as in a whole.
