First of all, don't give real examples for "Bad Oc's". Right. So what is a "bad OC" to you? For me, it's many things. A bad OC, in my opinion, use overused elements. Alicorns, too many useless details, rainbows, shipping with actual characters, and a few other reasons.
OC's are only bad when the creator is bad at making characters. Sure things like alicorns, rainbows, black and red color scheme are called bad, but why are they? Shipping with canon characters is iffy. Then again there is a simple solution to that. Don't look at it. If an artist makes OC x canon character art and you dislike it, then don't go into their gallery and complain. Ignore it and move on. I don't see how to many details could be a bad thing, unless you mean adding a ton of extra things that serve no purpose. The worst OCs are things that come from that pony maker thing.
Meh. Pony Maker isn't that bad. I use it, only because I'm a crappy artist. I did mean "a ton of extra things that serve no purpose." Sorry for any confusion. I personally don't like alicorns. They're clearly meant for royalty in the show, and are too common in OC's. I don't really like shipping. It's fine if it's OC x OC, but OC x Canon is too common. Even if it's being a canon's sibling. I just don't like it. This is my personal opinion. Others may have different opinions.
Alicorns might be for royalty and are common in OCs because people want them. What people seem to forget about OCs are that each one is in it's own universe, unless creators say others wise. People always say that there are too many alicorns like literally all of them are in the same castle. Same with ponyville, too many OCs live in ponyville, it's overcrowded. Don't know about you, but my characters don't belong to anyone's universe but mine. Even they were separate to begin with, but they are all dead now so it's irrelevant.
This. I can't speak for shipping OCs with canon characters because I do it all the time. I've also made alicorns, and members of royalty who aren't alicorns. My OC was made using Pony Maker, but I also put a bit of work into it (specifically witht he Cutie Mark). I don't like OCs that appear to be made by clicking the Random button and using whatever comes up. I also don't like when an OC has too many "human" qualities. This is kind of hard to explain, but I think you all know what I mean.
When the bodies are more than one color. Unless it is a zebra of course. Manes and tails are alright but I like my ponies to have monochrome coats. But that's just me. Some may say my OCs are bad.
Oh. Human names. I can't stand when an OC has a human name. Who wants to read about a pony named Steve?
That can't possibly be true. And if it is, use words in a different language. I like Russian and Latin, myself.
I did, I had Ciel. Sky in french. He was a pegasus that worked as a weather pony. Oh so creative I was with him. I also had Platinum before MLP jacked it with that dumb queen. But a lot of the good names seem to have been taken. Like Milky Way, using that will probably result in people complaining. That would be a great space obsessed pony name.
My OC is a generic pony-creator-fabulous creation in which very little thought was put into, so perhaps I'm not one to talk. I've never really been into RP'ing or fanfiction, so I can't say anything about OC's there, like one being OP'd or whatever. I just deal with the visual/art aspect. As far as that goes, I don't like colors that clash. Orange and green? Not into Oompa-Loompa looking OC's. I'm also not a fan of OC's that look too 'busy' or what many refer to as having too many unnecessary details and accessories. I don't care much about the alicorn thing, mostly because my OC is a pegasus and people with pegasus OC's have also been accused of being overused; I just chose the race I liked, I don't care much for what you like. So if alicorns are your thing, knock yourself out. The reason I wouldn't pick an alicorn as an OC is because I find it to be too presumptuous and self-important, and my OC (being a reflection of myself) just isn't like that. I agree that having an OC named 'Steve' isn't very appealing, but seeing as how my OC is Frost/Frosty Wings I'm not exactly killing it in the originality department either, so meh.
a bad oc? anyone 1- you didnt make at all 2- has no room to grow 3- is boring 4- you dont personally feel you could be, according to the "everything ever exists somewhere" multiverse theory. that's a bad oc. You have every power ever? terrible. You have every power ever, but using them drains you of all energy quickly? Congrats, you now have room to grow. good oc. "My name is ted..." Blegh. "My name is ted. glad to meet you. what is your name?" yes, not boring. "Her name is... dashing rainbow... she has... rainbow hair and is a pegasus." No... there isnt even a way to improve that, get rid of it. "I hate everything!" boy I hope you have a very dark personality... etc. etc. etc.
The only thing that makes an OC bad is when they are stupidly unrealistic(for MLP I mean). That's all.
A bad OC is what happens when somebody says: "Screw canon!" Humans-turned Pony, Unicorns that somehow have the ability to fly, Earth Ponies that are good at magic with no explaination... There's a fine line between creative and ridiculous.
Dunno about that one. Since unicorns could use their magic to levitate themselves, they potentially have the ability to fly if they are skilled enough with it, but would only have the skill of a young pegasi. Anything more skilled than that is sorta OP.
For me, a bad OC is when one fails to provide an adequate backstory and personality to them, like when they're basically just made to be 'cool' which usually means OP big time. Also, if you have a color scheme that probably wouldn't fit in the show, it's no good. So basically; No real backstory/personality, non-show like color scheme, and OP'ness is a bad OC
