In my opinion, you guys need to set some standards for usernames. Seeing a bunch of "Rainbow Dash1332" and "Rainbow_Dash" users everywhere is kinda stupid to me. Having tons of users with similar usernames is just stupid, not to mention many people with the actual cannon names haven't been online since, oh, say 2011 December. You shouldn't have someone who isn't online at all hogging a name somebody else could be using, and I think you guys need to set up some rules to prevent that from happening. There's been a few people who've had problems with this, me included, who's wanted a name they couldn't have because somebody had it. Not to mention that there are tons others with similar names. In my opinion, if somebody wants a name that's cannon, and the user hasn't been online, send them an email, or a private message. Mods should be able to do that, right? If they don't reply, free up the name for somebody else. Shows they never had plans to stay on the site, or come back at all. But yeah, that's my opinion on the matter. Discuss.
Pretty well-off, but if you wanna talk to me, send a VM, not on a thread related to a different topic xP
I thought I'd leave this here; Names are for anyone, making restrictions on names would just suck. Also; old accounts can't be deleted regardless. Only thing that can happen is the account being locked, this also being why there is a lot of names floating around. That's my opinion, not the staff's. The second part is the truth of what comes by, no one on the staff can delete an account, but only lock and ban them.
Admins can delete accounts. Anyway regarding this topic, I'm rather indifferent. I don't need a special name to feel good or whatever the reason people want them is. If you want to roleplay you can set a custom display name for the RP forum. Otherwise I don't see the point Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Admins are able to do just about anything really. They're essentially site owners Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Didn't someone else try to pass this? Only problem is, I've seen 50,000* "Vinyl" based accounts made, only to never post or go on the chat. There's no point in moderating names of canon characters. It'd be too much effort to mod the abused names of canon ponies. Or whatever.
If I recall, an old staff decision was made banning all canon names in the first place, except for those who were constantly active, which was only one at the time. Why the admins haven't been enforcing this is beyond me.
Yeah of course. Naturally you can't have swear words or stuff like that in your username, and you can't have special characters. A new (pretty much unspoken) rule was that canon pony names could not be used. Mainly the Mane Six, not real sure about Fanon names.
What we could possibly do is set an automated e-mail to be sent to users who've been inactive for a certain period of time (let's say 1 year). People would receive the e-mail, and if they reply to it, their account stays. If we get no reply, or they give us their approval, we could delete the account, making the username available again. I'm sure other websites with a high member count use a similar method. However, when it comes down to it, if a username you want isn't available, you'll just have to pick another one. We can't force users to give up their account just because someone else wants the username. If anything, it's only a solution to remove old un-used accounts.
I've been on a few sites where that was a rule, one month inactivity, names for grabs. It worked perfectly fine, and if you started with that rule in the first place, it's be perfectly fine. I got another name I wanted on an older site because of this, and no fights have broken out. And I never mentioned deleting anything, merely opening up the name. AKA, change them to User_XXXX (The user ID they have). Worked on another site I was on perfectly, and kept the names confusion free.
Considering that EP seems to only have about fifty active members at any given time, I don't see why this is such a problem. I would hope that fans of a show about talking magical ponies would have enough creativity to come up with a new username if the one they want is taken. Taking away a person's name simply because they took a month or two off is ridiculous.
Not really. Zephyr, a name I used for years was already taken. It took me about 2 weeks to come up with another one to sign up here. I'm for about 6 or so months of inactivity to change names. Dante here brings up some good points.
I'm not sure if we're thinking of the same thing here, probably, but anyway Yes, IIRC, Everypony.com had really only just started when the decision to limit common names was made. Although I'm not exactly sure what ever happened beyond that. From what I remember (and I could be completely wrong) this was actually implement but didn't really work too well, with people taking names like, Ra1nbow Dash Rainbow Dashh Rain_bow_dash etc, etc Not to mention background characters were always getting new names. EDIT: Ah, here we go, http://www.everypony.com/forums/showthread.php?34-Name-rule
Always have a backup..? @Doggy and Ramza, To help clarify it was my decision to remove the name restrictions and unblock canon names. Whether or not canon names will be blacklisted again will of course be up to the current admins. I removed the restrictions because in my eyes it was an unnecessary limitation...
